As you are likely aware, there was a tragic incident at the Mall in Columbia this weekend. The police have identified the suspect in the incident as Darion Aguilar, who was a 2013 Graduate of Blake High School.
Although this incident did not involve our school in any way, many of us may have known this young man and, therefore may be upset or concerned. On Monday, we will have counselors on hand to speak to students who wish to talk with someone. Students who need assistance or feel the need to talk about this incident may report to the Guidance Office as needed. I will be addressing students via the PA at the beginning of the school day. Teachers will be sensitive to the needs of students, but also maintain a sense of normalcy to the school day routines.
As you also may have seen, this story has attracted significant media attention, both local and national. It is possible that crews from media outlets will be near the school tomorrow morning, although they will not be permitted on school property. Students, parents and staff are not obliged to speak with the media, especially since this story has no real connection to Blake. We will work to keep this a school day focused on learning.
Please keep the families of all who have been affected by this incident in your thoughts and prayers. It is a sad time of reflection for our wider community.
