Sony: PS4 Scarcity To Continue Until April

Posted

in its first 90 days on the market, PlayStation 4 has sold a staggering 5.3 million units. Though it was expected that PS4 would prove successful – at least out of the gate – its historic sales have even shocked Sony itself.

According to MCV, sales this high were so unexpected to Sony that it expects the console will continue to be difficult to find, at least for the next couple of months. PlayStation UK executive Fergal Gara told the website that April is the likely month PS4s will be easier to find in stores.

“I can’t work [the math] our precisely,” he said. “But based on what I’ve seen so far, I think it is going to be [hard to find a console] until around about April. You might get a fortnight or a week here or there where it is more available, but we should be back to free supply by about April… That’s our best guess. It might be a little earlier than that, or it might be a little later. But we’ll get there.”

Gara explained that Sony was seeing strong pre-orders that indicated the PS4 would be successful upon launch, “but they were so big that we were pinching ourselves and wondering if people were pre-ordering in more than one place, and if some of these pre-orders were real... We were getting numbers we never imagined, let alone seen before. But it proved to be real.”

PlayStation 4 has so far steadily outsold the Xbox One -- a console that’s also showing strong sales – and is on the precipice of passing Wii U’s global sales. PlayStation 4 just launched in Sony’s home territory of Japan mere hours ago, where it’s expected to pile on to its units sold.

Yeah but I will try to get mine during the Summer/Fall season. Hopefully that should be when the hype for it dies down (at least until Christmas season arrives).

I'm aiming for May anyway :)

Waiting'till they iron out the bugs or FFXV releases over here. whichever comes first.

I hope this scarcity does not last all the way till October or November when I plan on buying a PS4.

And Thats why I'm waiting for 2023 when the PS5 comes out, then I'll buy my PS4! :) HECK I JUST BOUGHT MY PS3 YESTERDAY xD
