With the official service date of FINAL FANTASY XIV for PS4 set to begin this upcoming Monday, many PS3 users looking to upgrade can get in on the next-generation release for free for a limited time.

Starting from Friday, April 11th at 4AM EDT through the end of this year those with a registered PS3 service account have the option to upgrade to the PS4 version – provided they relinquish all rights to the PS3 copy of the game. Those who wish to still play on PS3 and PS4 simultaneously will have to purchase another copy as access to the PS3 version will require a new license. Once the upgrade process is complete it won’t be able to be undone, so make sure you’re committed before finishing the submission.

Upon completion, all characters and in-game data from your PS3 version will be seamlessly carried over to the PS4. Cross Bar and macro settings can be transferred as well, with more details on that available through this link. The upgrade service itself will be available through the Mog Station portal site, which can be accessed through your Square Enix log-in – the one you use to log into FINAL FANTASY XIV already – here.

Definitely. You're literally getting the definitive version that's better in every single way for free.

Exactly, especially since I'm not very committed to the PS3 version anyway. Plus I still keep my character and data.
