FINAL FANTASY III was released as a late life NES game in Japan, and as a result an English version wouldn't be able to happen with pressure to translate FINAL FANTASY IV for the SNES.
When Square Enix went to port FINAL FANTASY III to WonderSwan Color and PlayStation they realized the game had so much data they wouldn't be able to improve upon it for a port so in 2004 they begun development of a full remake with 3D graphics for what was going to be the PlayStation 2 but was early on decided to be for Nintendo DS instead. A couple years later it released, and then finally it was released in English on Nintendo DS.
Years later, they remastered the game in high definition for iOS so people could then play it on their iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. Then they went port crazy but with fair reason. First Android for smartphones and tablets running Android then PlayStation Portable so it was finally available on a PlayStation platform or two in this case with PlayStation Vita. Far from done though, they then released the Android version on the Amazon Appstore for Amazon Kindle devices, then Ouya, then Windows Phone and now finally PC through Steam.
Square Enix is expected to do the same for the iOS and Android versions of FINAL FANTASY IV, FINAL FANTASY V and FINAL FANTASY VI over the next year or two.
