sooo yeaaah. I'm normally not the type of person who likes horror anime. Sure I've seen Attack on Titan and Soul Eater (well It's somewhat horror. I don't know ._. ), I watched a few episodes just to

Funny how I made this thread and I haven't even started the manga yet... huh.
So, Tokyo Ghoul... its a show alright.
I'm not really one to get into horror series. The closest I've gotten is watching or reading series that have elements of horror in them, like Soul Eater, Attack On Titan, and even JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. However, Tokyo Ghoul is a full fledged horror series, and from what I've seen, a really good one at that.
Tokyo Ghoul literally premiered today; it's animated by Studio Pierrot and licensed by Funimation for streaming in NA. The show's premise can literally be summed up in the title: Its in Tokyo and its about Ghouls... the end. lol
No not really. The real premise is that its set in Tokyo and there's these freaks running around called Ghouls, red and black eyed creatures (for the Naruto fans, you might notice it kinda looks like a mix between Sharingan and Byakugan) which are basically zombies on steroids that look like humans and love eating people. And I do mean love. Its also implied that they have some other powers, but its still unclear at the moment.
Anyways, the star of this show is a college student named Kaneki. We first see him with his pal Hide at a cafe, where we see them going on about dates while a reporting of a Ghoul event goes on and they don't even care... okay then. After Kaneki gets to go on a date with a hot chick who came into the cafe and loves reading as much as he does, Rize, he ends up getting hospitalized after Rize tries to eat him, because yes, she's a Ghoul. And in what I can describe as one of the biggest "f**k you" to any main protagonist I've ever seen: one of Rize's eyes and some of her organs are transplanted into Kaneki so he can live, and because of that, he himself becomes a Ghoul-Human hybrid. We then seeing the "change" of sorts start to develop in Kaneki: he craves human flesh, regular food tastes bad, and he can't be hurt by knives. Eventually, he has a mental breakdown, and ends up in a "feeding" area where he's intercepted by another Ghoul (Hide's creepy roommate Nishiki actually. Yeah, that's fitting) and then saved by yet another Ghoul named Toka, a girl who came up earlier in the episode (she was a waitress at the cafe who Kaneki had a thing for until Rize showed up), who forces him to eat a human hand and come to terms with him now being part Ghoul. The episode ends there, and boy is there a lot to take in from this.
There are a lot of good things I can say about his show: great animation, really tense atmosphere, blood and gore and more blood all over, its pure horror at its best. And right now, all I can hope for is that the lore and mechanics of the universe can be revealed a bit more in the next installment, like how Toka and Nishiki's dialouge implied that there's like this whole Ghoul "underworld" where they assign districts for the Ghouls to eat. So yeah, a lot more info. on that would be appreciated. And maybe I'll keep an eye out for the manga too (which started in 2011 if you didn't know).
