You see the Mickey pic that's currently representing you? That's an avatar. They're just for...whatever you might need an avatar for.

To expand a little, an avatar is a 'representation' It's not necessarily a picture, for example, whenever you play as a character in a videogame, that character is your avatar; it represents your actions in the game.
