Naruto Shippuden is awful except for the pain arc. That was the only part I truly enjoyed. The first naruto series was vastly superior.

Bleach also sucks.

SAO II isn't very good.

I pointed out the fanservice as an example. What I'm trying to point out is low quality anime. Low quality meaning lazy writing, poor animation, and sporadic pacing. Fanservice may be a contributing factor, but I'm more worried about the other stuff I listed.

I was talking generally, not just the United States. It could become mainstream in the U.S., Russia, Australia, France, any high population place and it will affect the anime industry, because, like I said, it's for the money, not our tastes. I don't think they are xenophobic at all actually. Japan is very westernized, so I don't see how they are xenophobic, but not the point.

Those companies are smart, listening to the fanbase. The fanbase that gives them money. Of course they would get the license for the acclaimed anime, they know it will sell. But the audience for anime in the U.S. is relatively small, especially the paying audience. I'd argue most of the recently airing anime aren't praise-worthy at all, but again, not the point.

Both Japan and the U.S. companies aim to make money. That's the ultimate goal. So they will be smart with anime, at least in their eyes, by finding the best ratio of how much work they put in versus the amount of money they get out. If anime becomes mainstream, the balance will be tipped to have low quality versus high money. I don't believe I mentioned anything about U.S. companies unrelated to anime affecting the anime industry.

So now you're saying that as long as it brings in money, any residue of anime, whether it be good or crap, will be made profitable and more anime that panders to select crowds will be released and sought after.

Yeah, again, you're underestimating the intelligence level of general anime fans. Even the most casual of casuals aren't stupid enough to fall for the same shenanigans that an anime comparable to Keeping Up With The Kardashians. Anime is still in the upper echelon of animation, and they only pay money to see the highest quality in anime. And yes, even shows that aren't so good are still sought after. Why? Because preference. One man's trash is another man's treasure, and frankly, some anime's ability to be brought over to international waters isn't even based on money. Anime like JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, for example, has a lot of references to real-life musicians and actors, making it a colossal copyright mess. Only now after at least forty years is the manga even being released from the beginning (although that can also attest to the popularity of the newest anime adaption, but still.)

Besides, in terms of "anime being mainstream", what's the harm? Shouldn't we want a medium that we like to be appreciated to get more attention? Being mainstream isn't as lame as it used to be, especially when the people behind the medium of anime outside Japan treat it well even at its current level of popularity. You know what was the last time the states tried to make anime "mainstream"? That "corny" phase I was talking about, when they butchered anime with crap dubs and sold them for outrageous prices. And again, that way of thinking turned right the hell around.

Also, I'm glad to see that you're riding the "shit on SAO" bandwagon and linking overly long "rants", not "reviews" or "analysis", just "rants", by a guy who is so obviously up his own ass about this show that it's not even worth reading. I couldn't even get past the first two paragraphs, especially when he gets low enough to insult the scriptwriter. Bad anime or not, insulting the people who made it is just flat-out immature.

That's not what I'm saying. Continue to support the anime industry. I know it's in need of it. I won't shame anyone getting into anime. But, I'm against the whole idea of it being mainstream, because of the reasons I stated before. It sounds contradictory, I know, but I'm honestly not trying to discourage people getting into anime.

Awful is subjective or objective, depending on the context. If I were to say, "This human feces tastes great!" is it suddenly good? No, obviously it's objectively awful tasting, because it's literally shit.

I'll take Sword Art Online as an example. The anime is "mainstream" in regards to the anime community. I see the anime is full of bullshit. For example, the obvious harem that is introduced halfway through the first arc. They waste so much valuable time on those girls that could've been invested in the relationship between Kirito and Asuna, but instead, we got a bunch of girls who fall in love with him because he's high leveled and romantically oblivious. There are more problems with it, but I found a handy list of a bunch of things wrong with the SAO anime. Oh, and here's one for the second season, just for kicks. And don't excuse the anime's shortcomings because that's how it was in the source material. If the anime studio had cared about quality, they would've either made it better or never touched it in the first place.

So, SAO is riddled with bad writing and bad pacing. Why is it so popular then? It's because it panders. It gets a cool sounding idea and just writes it like a 15 year old imaging what it would be like if he were a Gary Stu. It's a huge powertrip. It might be entertaining to you, but, to be brutally honest, you don't know what makes a good anime.

I apologize if I typed a bit of gibberish. I'm very sleepy. I just wanted to type this up real quick.

Edit: Cleared up some of my points now that I'm rested.

I honestly can't take your argument seriously when you blatantly insult my own opinions like that. I can like SAO if I want. I consider it to be good. It's reasons exactly like what you just wrote to me that make me despise being associated with the anime/manga community. All you're doing is proving my point that a lot of anime/manga fans are elitists who act like total jerks to anyone who's a casual fan. I know what makes something interesting for me, and that's what matters. I'm not giving in to a hardcore fan's point of view just because that is what is factually "correct."

Since I have some time to kill, I might as well belt out some opinions:

  • Kintoki should get its own anime adaption.
  • Anything from Wanted! (sans Romance Dawn) should get its own adaption.
  • Dr. Slump should get another anime adaption or at least an anime that can be distributed internationally.
  • DragonBall (i.e. the original story) should get a new anime adaption.
  • DragonBall Minus isn't great, but it doesn't deserve the massive amount of hate it gets.
  • Naruto (the entire story) should get a new anime adaption sometime down the line as an anniversary project or something.
  • 4Kids Pokemon friggin' sucks. I don't care WHICH anime it is. It just sucks.
  • Any Pokemon anime not dubbed by 4Kids in English is ten times better by default.
  • Pokemon needs more home releases with the original language.
  • Still waiting on "Soul Eater: Brotherhood"...
  • Also waiting on a "Blue Exorcist: Brotherhood" but that's probably less likely.

When an anime does something so amazingly stuipid you just want to break your TV screen. Like in Vampire Knight: Guilty, with that whole ending. Just ALL of it. Why? Seriously, were the writers purposefully trying to make it suck? This supposed 3rd season is somehow supposed to fix that ending?

Also that WTF moment in Death Note when they start fighting and their shirts upll up high enough to make you think you accidentally put in yaoi: what purpose did that serve, besides showing off skin colours from the animators?

Also just Death Note's character design...period. I can't even start with how much is wrong with the character design, because we'd be here all day.

(bump)

  • Akame ga Kill! needs another anime adaption, or maybe an adaption for Zero.
  • One-Punch Man (i.e. the 12 episode anime) was a huge disappointment that did not live up to the hype. In other words, it's Attack on Titan.
  • Samurai Champloo is pretty to look at but still largely pointless. (So far, at least. Still watching.)
  • I never finished FMA, but from I learned from Brotherhood, I would probably not like what comes near the end.
  • DragonBall Super... well, I already have a thread for this, so never mind.

I wanna add something that has been bugging me lately.

Crunchyroll does not really have good anime at all. Most of the anime they have on their website is harem, ecchi, and just fanservice.

I also dislike how FUNanimation has licensed SO MUCH good anime.

Also Black Butler needs to be redone completely I can't watch it anymore because I'm so true to the manga.

Also, I wish there were more cooking anime. There are a lot of sports anime, but why not a lot of cooking anime. I find cooking anime just...delicious.

I prefer Bleach over Naruto.

I'm indifferent to subs or dubs.

I don't like Attack on Titan.

Kill la Kill is an amazing anime that needs more love.

I like Persona 4 The Animation.

Blue Exorcist's soundtrack is lacking compared to Hiroyuki Sawano's other works.

Panty and Stocking is OK. Just OK.

A sick,SICK part of me finds some enjoyment from Sonic X.

Red Line is the best-looking anime I have ever seen.

Dragonball Gt is the bomb.

I think sao is awful.

FMA original is better than brotherhood.

Well, I'm bored, so I'm just gonna shoot from the hip about some viewpoints I have that are both common and not-so-common:

  • I'm not sure what the perception is nowadays, but if you're one of those people who specifically shits on shonen manga or any action-based anime based in that same category just based on principle and love to prefer to watch "sophisticated" or "serious" anime, then you need to chill out. Shonen, particularly battle shonen, is harmless. It's not a plague on human existence. Is there a lot of familiarity in it? Sure, but it's the same case for other types of shows too, where's their excuse? Haven't you ever heard of "tropes"? Everybody uses them. And just because every piece of media isn't going to change your entire perception of the world doesn't mean it's bad either. I could go on but then we'd be here all day. But seriously, chill out.
  • This one is literally coming off the top of my head, but I literally just saw this question pop up on another website: "why do anime girls never get their period?" I'll tell you why, it's because nobody wants to see that. It's not entertaining and it's not necessary to show. Just like showing RPG protagonists take a break from their epic journey to use the bathroom. Nobody cares. This is fiction, not reality. People are trying to tell a story, not go through the boring and/or irrelevant aspects of everyday life. That's what actual real life is for!
  • Subs vs Dubs... both. Yeah, that's right, both. I'm not picking a side. I speak English, and I like hearing English, and I like watching anime in English, especially because of my love for voice-acting, but guess what: either a) not every anime I watch is going to have an English dub available so I either have to wait or just break even and watch the original track, and most of the time I do the former because I ain't gonna wait, and b) Japanese voice actors are f*cking excellent 99% of the time so WYNAUT. They take their craft very seriously, unlike Western voice acting which only became worth a damn sometime in the mid-2000s, after we got past the "4Kids" era.
  • Filler sucks... but sometimes it doesn't... yeah.
  • Here's a interesting tidbit: I am so sick of seeing studios animate shows based on manga and then go the route of making Gecko Endings or just "Go Read The Manga" type endings (this obviously doesn't apply to long running series). If you're going to make an anime based on a manga, then pace yourselves correctly so that we don't end up wading through bullshit just to see the show end and not in the way that's it supposed to, becase 99% of the time, the studio just doesn't know what they're doing. Even if you get the creator involved, you can't guarantee that things will go smoothly. It's all a big mess.
