Yes...and somewhat no. There is a main canon story throughout your journey, particularly whenever there is a quest at Daybreak Town. While there isn't a direct path or order to follow, you can basically complete as many quests in a world as you can until the story of that world can't be continued until the next update or the story of that world is completed. If you pay close enough attention, the overall story is continued whenever Chirithy shows up and gives you a mission in each world. So in a way, even if you aren't focusing on the main plot, you are furthering the story. It's kind of like how all the Kingdom Hearts games have worked, only it works much more like an MMO where you can complete quests between different worlds at will without needing to complete the world first (again, you have no choice until the story for each world is completed with an update), but each world kind of has something to offer to the overall plot at the end of each world story. It's a main campaign with several little branches that loop back into the main campaign.
