Do you think it would have been better if Dream Drop Distance didn't just copy and paste the plot of the Tron movie, but instead used the opportunity to explore the already established lore within the universe regarding the world of Tron? I mean, KH2 makes it pretty clear that Tron has some connections to Ansem and Xehanort, and perhaps taking another foray into the computer world would reveal the information that was considered "corrupted" in KH2.

I definitely would've appreciated this. Although to be fair, lately i've noticed that the Disney worlds in recent KH games have been copy and pastes of the plots of their respective movies, just with Sora and co. thrown into it, and they don't really incorporate much to do with the Main Storyline of KH. TBH, it felt to me like they definitely started more copying and pasting of the movie plots after II TBH. :

They did break off from the story in Sora's plot. And the reason they stuck with the movie plot in Riku's story was because, as Xemnas had said, that The Grid was the original version of the ENCOM data that Ansem had found. Ansem had a copy of The Grid and modified that copy, which became Space Paranoids. So the world of the The Grid and Space Paranoids are not the same and Tron in 3D is not the same Tron in KH2. The only reason Tron reached out for Sora's hand was because Sora had imprinted his memories on Rinzler, and so he "remembered" even though they weren't his actual memories.
