December 5, 201410 yr Hmmm......I think I've seen this sort of behavior most prominent in Family Guy fans. As the seasons have gone on, Seth McFarlane has made numerous changes ( temporarily killing off Brian, slightly changing his personality, making Stewie more open about his sexuality, etc.) I've heard stuff like: "Stewie used to be an evil mastermind, now he's just gay! This show SUCKS!" Blah, blah, blah. I can only imagine how frustrating it must be for the story writers themselves when fans are unable to be satisfied. Can't please everyone, you know?
December 5, 201410 yr Well sometimes it's people trolling in Youtube comments. But the more likely reason people act this way is: All jokes aside I agree. Those people who act that way really tick me off. Edited December 5, 201410 yr by Master Eraqus
December 5, 201410 yr Yeah, I tottaly get it! I'm reading the manga Fuuka and Fuuka died. The freaking girl who gives the manga its name died. I was shocked alright, but found it damn interesting, and got even more excited to keep reading. Then I saw the comments: "Any of you gonna drop this manga? Ugh, I can't read this anymore. WTF did the author do? I'm not reading this trash anymore." I was like: Seriously, people?
December 5, 201410 yr While complaining about changes usually is just a bunch of whining, I can kinda understand why they would. I embrace changing the status quo, but it's also a risky move, and sometimes changes may not actually be for the better. Sometimes they're pointless. Sometimes some fans legitimately liked it how things were before the changes happened, and are no longer interested in what the work has become. Like, the Family Guy example: some fans legitimately liked Stewie when he was Evil Mastermind Baby instead of Gay Baby (although from what I can tell, that's only one part of a bigger issue when it comes to Family Guy...). Or the Fuuka example, which I've never heard of and so I have no idea what the context of the death is. If you're killing off the title character, I mean... not even knowing anything about it, I can understand why that wouldn't resonate well with a lot of people. Killing off characters is a bold, risky move, unless the work in general does it regularly. Fans get attached to characters, and if they die, that character won't be there anymore. Well, unless you're DBZ where curing death is a matter of making a wish. Not to mention death in general can be seen as either poignant, or very gratuitous. If it wasn't planned, if it was mean spirited, or if it was done just for the sake of being sad and not because the character needed to die to advance the plot -- and be honest, how often is it necessary? -- you're gonna piss people off. That doesn't necessarily mean they can't accept anything new. Sometimes they're just jumping ship because they're disappointed in the direction the work is taking. Abandoning it is perfectly valid -- it's not like they don't have hundreds of other potential things to spend their time on. It's not their work and they have no say as to what's going on, but they have the right to accept or reject what it's doing.
December 5, 201410 yr While I agree that whining and complaining about changes and the like in a story is annoying and unproductive, I do think that opinions matter. There are some stories I've lost interest in because the story went in a directions i didn't like, a character I like was killed or changed in a way i thought lessened the character. I think that is a legitimate reason to stop watching a show or playing a game. But, I also think that when talking about your reasons for thinking a decision in a story was bad, indicate that it is yours and that there is room for ours to have their own opinions.
