Iwata: "There Are Too Many Cutscenes In Video Games

Most of the video games we play these days are littered with lengthy cut scenes as a way to progress with the story. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata says that there are simply too many in video games nowadays and that Shigeru Miyamoto would agree with him on this statement. Iwata said that Miyamoto is one of the few developers that isn’t reliant on producing cut-scenes and he wonders what could have been done instead with the time, money and resources.

Iwata: So [modern games] are backed by this huge amount of effort and technology, but it feels like very few people remember them [story moments] or players skip over things within the game.

Kawakami: It certainly feels like there’s too many cut-scenes these days.

Iwata: Of course, you can use them effectively; I’m not trying to dismiss them completely, but I can’t help but wonder what could have been instead done with the energy [time, money, resources] that went into them. Miyamoto has never used many cut-scenes, in his games, but recently I think he has begun to think the same way, too.

Honestly, I half-way agree with him. there are a few games I've come to know that have waaaaaaaaay too many cutscens over gameplay (looking at you MGS games and Asura's Wrath). But than again, without cutscenes, video games just wouldn't be...video games. Cutscenes are a way to make things feel more cinematic. AT least to me.

If Iwata had his way, Xenoblade wouldn't have been nearly as good, lol. I admit, alot of games have alot of narrative/cutscenes these days, but that's because Story is becoming a more sought after element in games all around now. Sure, we can have a good game that has a paper thin or no story, but alot of people want that in some games.

There are so many good reasons why cutscenes belong in games.  It gives you incentive to keep playing and get to know the characters, because if you didn't know who you were playing as, wouldn't you be less interested in playing?  It gives you a chance to be emotionally involved in these character's problems as you play.  You get to relate and empathize with them.  Imagine some games like Final Fantasy XIII.  The plot and cutscenes in that game were great and was the main driving force for you to continue on until the end.  Without cutscenes, the game just wouldn't be the same.

 

Cutscenes give you the feeling that you're progressing and that you're doing good.  It's a nice reward to watch a really pretty or significant cutscene after playing for a while.  Even the smallest cutscene leaves the biggest impact on you.  What a character does or says can leave a lasting impression on you and can make the game more memorable and likeable.

 

It also wouldn't make much sense if you moved to a new location in the game without an explanation. 

 

To be honest, I believe games wouldn't be as big as they are today without cutscenes. 

I don't think so...Every time there's a cutscene I get excited and I feel like it's my reward for beating a boss or something. I love cutscenes!

FinalFantasy XV?!

Oh geez louise.... I thought XIII was supposed to be an awesome story that was told to the player. Now they say games have too many cutscenes? How the heck do you want to achieve a story without cutscenes? Unless of course he doesn't mean FF and he means something like MGS.
