December 29, 201410 yr The problem with Homura is that even though she cares, she does too good of a job with her "I'm a cool loner who doesn't need anyone" facade, to the characters and the audience. I need to consciously remind himself she wants to save everyone deep down, because by (many of) her actions and her general vibe, it's easy for me to think she doesn't care and that she's too cool and capable to receive peoples' help. Her single-minded devotion to Madoka doesn't help matters. The confrontation between her and Sayaka in ep 8 is a scene that makes it easy for me to forget she gives a crap about people besides Madoka. No matter how many times I watch episode 10, no matter how much I remind myself that she does want to save everyone, and no matter how much I remind myself she'd be saving Sayaka from a worse fate than death if she killed her on the spot, the fact that Homura was willing to kill Sayaka simply because her descent into despair is making Madoka sad... gah, firetruck you Homura. If the scene emphasized saving Sayaka from witchdom instead of how her actions are hurting Madoka, I'd understand. The audience wouldn't realize it at the time, but Homura would be right about it. But no. The push that compelled Homura to try to kill Sayaka was because of Madoka. Again, even intelligently knowing her motives and what she's been through, it just feels like Homura has no problems killing Sayaka, Madoka's best friend, just so Madoka will stop being sad and Homura will have her to herself. And then there's the movie. Really, watching that one finally gave me permission to hate Homura. I know she's broken and been through a lot, but as I mentioned, her stoic facade is too good. Even though I know it's not her true self (probably), it doesn't make it any less irritating to me.
