  • Well you'll definitely get objected-oriented programing down.  Be prepared to spend a while in front of the computer.  I once missed my cousin's birthday party because I spent all day trying to get C+

Hey guys! trimester starts on Sept. 7. I don't have my schedule yet since I'll be getting it on Sept. 2

I was wrong when I said I don't get vacays, we apparently have a two week break between terms. I can't help but ask now so got any advice for freshmen? :D

Yeah, become a senior as quick as possible :P

Well, I start school today. Kinda. Today through Saturday is just for freshman, with a bunch of introductory activities and what not. Will only have our freshman writing class to attend, then real classes start next Monday.

I'm nervous, to say the least. X_X I leave in about an hour. I hope there's a somewhat sizable group of commuter students, perhaps we could hangout during the dead periods of these next few days, cause there are a few time slots that really seem more geared toward people living on campus and I'm not quite sure what to do during them.

Yeah, even though I'm not a freshman at college most of this week's studies have been an introductory to the class as well.  My advice on something to do between classes would be to study up on content needed for one of your classes (like bring that extra textbook or something) and hang out in the college library or lounge area.  If not, maybe you could bring a good book or video game console?  It may take a while for you to start getting to know people (I honestly hadn't even spoken to anyone in my 1x/week class until the last two or three sessions) unless you're really outgoing, so I would prepare for some self-entertainment in the meantime.  Good luck, and you'll get through this!  I hope that you get to make some friends soon!

Hey does anyone else have a speech class currently or has taken one?  I need some ideas for stuff to talk about, haha.

I don't know yet :D

Is there a specific topic you have/want to talk about? or just anything in particular?

I'm currently in a speech class, and it's *seriously* not my favorite.  The class is originally online, so I have to record myself and, in addition, seek ten people locally for my audience.  This is rather difficult since I don't really know anyone where I live. : (  As for things to speak about, hmm . . . . My speech this week is about artifacts that you hold dear, so perhaps that could be a topic?  I wouldn't do anything that could turn into a heated debate, but perhaps speak about why you think something is better than another thing, or something like the reason behind the significance of something.  (i.e. you should brush your teeth because it has health benefits, helps bad breath, whitens teeth, et cetera.)  Good luck!  These speech courses are tough.

Really just anything.  At this point I'm leaning towards doing a brief informative speech on the sociology of music over time.

I would hate to do a speech class online.  It's like I understand why a professor would want you to get an audience of ten people, but that's not always easy for reasons like yours.  I hope things work out!

Ah, it probably will; I just get tremendously stressed out over silly stuff such as gathering people I don't know to watch me talk about a topic that even I am uninterested by. : P  I wish you the best of luck with your speech, too!

So just had my first official day of classes (after four days of orientation), and I'm already surprised by how different things are. Pretty much all my assignments are done and/or turned in online, the professors included day-by-day plans for the class for the entire semester in the syllabus, got assigned homework and a paper on the first day, the irregularity of the schedule, and all the walking to different buildings. Seriously a huge depart from my high school. o_o

I really like how class isn't every day, but I'm already hating the fact that I have an 8:30 AM class three times a week. On the other hand, the other two days I basically have free mornings, which is nice.

I ordered one of my text books online and it hasn't arrived yet. And of course I absolutely NEED it this week. T_T Worst case scenario I'll have to get it from the school's bookstore for over $200.

Also, don't like how some text books are just a stack of pages that you have to put in a binder. It wasn't even that much cheaper than a normal book.

I got to say, seeing as how often I am on here means that college life is not as bad as I thought it would be. Week one for me has been great.

I had a speech class last semester and I didn't enjoy it xD We had to do a few small speeches and 4 major speeches. First was demonstrative and I demonstrated how to build a tower out of bendy straws, because I learned how to build one in my engineering class the previous semester. Second was informative and I did mine on the field of pharmacy, because I work in pharmacy. Third was persuasive and I did mine about wearing your seatbelt, which i was inspired to do because I was in a car wreck like a week or two before. Fourth was a group speech and our group did ours on travelling and we talked about the places we've each been to. So my advice is, take inspiration from your life. Inspiration from other classes, work, friends, life, etc.

That pretty much sums up my classes xD I find it enjoyable, because the syllabus aspect gives you a heads up and allows you to possibly work ahead and stay ahead of the game. Turning in assignments online can be a good/bad thing. Like if your computer screws up the day before and you haven't turned it in, you might need to scramble to figure out a way to get it in, but it's also easier for the professor to not lose your work that way lol

I just got invited to join the international honor society, Phi Theta Kappa!!!!!

Well after some early week headaches (troubles with the online component of my Spanish textbook, my Computer Science textbook order cancelled and refunded, after saying it had been shipped for over a week), I think I'm doing okay now. I've got all the textbook stuff figured out, know where all my classes are, know where there will always be good parking, figured out all the online stuff for classes, and have a few people that I'm becoming friends with.

I have an easy, 1 hour, 1 credit class on Tuesdays, and I just have the lab portion of my Computer Science course on Thursdays, so I'm able to spread out the homework I can do. Basically goes full day - easy day - full day - easy day - full day - weekend. So doing my homework on the easy days basically lets me have a decent amount of free time everyday.

The only thing that's stressing me out anymore is that 1) I already have a essay to do and I need to interview someone for it and 2) my dad keeps telling me to get a job (I got work study money, so I need to get a campus job to earn it). Otherwise, I'm doing pretty well now.

Is this your first Computer Science class? Also, what is the name of your class? I have my first computer science class this semester, Java Programming. I find it very interesting and so far I think it's my favorite class :)

That sounds like a pretty nice schedule.  With luck and proper organization you'll probably be able to set it up so you can have the entire weekend for yourself without studying. : )  That essay sounds kind of stressful, and it can seem burdening when a lot of assignments are piled on at once.  Have you found someone to interview, and does it need to be someone in person?

Yup, it is my first. The name is "Introduction to Computer Science". From what it sounds like, it's going to be a general overview of all the different parts of the field. I've only had two classes so far, but we've learned Binary and touched upon ASCII and Unicode. I believe that after this class is when things start to get more specific. I'm enjoying it so far, more than I probably should considering binary isn't the most exciting subject. xD Probably the only class I've actually learned something in so far.

The interview doesn't have to be in person, but the professor says he would prefer if it was. I want to interview my high school government teacher, as I think he'd have some good insight on the subject we're covering (analyzing the idea of success and of the "American dream"). The only problem is that I'm not sure if I'll be able to arrange a meeting with him in time to get the rough draft done (its due next Friday). And the interview is pretty integral to the whole piece, so it'd be hard to do a first draft without that component.

And yeah, the schedule is nice. ^_^ I don't think I'll be able to get weekends totally free, but it shouldn't be too bad.

We've talked about similar topics. I learned about binary code, bytes, ASCII, how computers, printers, and memory storage devices were in the 80s, and more recently we've actually started on learning things about the Java Language.

I'm taking Business Administration, major in Business Management. yep pretty business-y :D

this full schedule is worth it if it means graduating 1 year earlier (may the day where I regret what I said here not come.)

I mostly just have one notebook for Pre-Calculus, but I start my English class on Wednesday so I may use one for that class as well.

:D I asked because my parents told me to get a notebook for each subject but i dunno. maybe I'll just get a binder and have a separate notebook for math.

I'm kind of enjoying college so far, but chemistry class is difficult. The professor doesn't give many explanations and the test last week made me cry. :
