I've never had a problem with Donald's Cures, to be completely honest. I get that people have made that meme popular such as TheGamersJoint, but on my Critical runs, Donald does his job more or less when he's supposed to. If anything, I think the complaints about 2.5 are more reasonable.

Me too. I never understood why people complained about Donald until I saw a let's play where Donald ignored Sora. But to be fair, the person didn't use the same setting I use.

Yeah, I mean, you can even set Donald & Goofy's AIs to not fight or help Sora. Of course, why would you do that? Sora is powerful, but he still needs those two.

 

I personally like Donald better than most KH fans hate him. His Magic meter in KH1 can reach so far, it's almost impossible for him to run out. He even learns on his own in KH1. He won't always cast magic on the Wizards, instead, he'll hit them with melee attacks, since those won't heal the Wizards.

Maybe he only heals the players who respect him enough. In all seriousness, he's still efficient, as long as you don't give him or Goofy items to waste.
