If Kingdom Hearts is an Action RPG...

Posted

How much of the games are action and how much of it is RPG. Percentage wise that is. Because some games are more action/rpg than the other.

The way I see it, it's more action than RPG. It doesn't have mahor RPG elements like character customisation and class selection etc. The command deck is rather RPG like though. Also, the game isn't very open world, so there's not much to explore.

70% action, 30% RPG. No titles, no type of job system, you can't choose the way you level up (e.g perks), there are hardly any real towns or genuine sidequests. Most of the games are very linear.

KH1 and KH2 have item synthesis e.g an item crafting method. You gain experience, you level up, you gain new weapons, you get accessories and skills. The first 2 games are more RPG like than the others. BBS and DDD have hardly any RPG elements to them.

It's actiony because you mash buttons to do things, it's all real time combat.

I could have sworn I just saw almost all these posts on KH's subreddit.

But like 3/4th action, 1/4th RPG.

To me, it's a 50/50 split!  It's 50% action because of the stylish way that one deals out combos and combat the enemy, and 50% RPG in terms of the light RPG elements, such as experience points, equipping weapons that boost your stats, learning abilities as you level up and equipping items that help boost your stats!  So yeah, to me, it's quite even! :3

The way I look at it, there is a lot of both in there, but Action wins the majority.

The way you fight the enemies is action-based, but there are still many in-depth statistics in all the items, abilities, and resistances that make it feel like an RPG at times. Also, if you're like me, who is not a Dodging Legend, when you fight almost anything in the games, you will eventually get hit sometime, because there are secret stuff the game doesn't really tell you about, like the combo limits on bosses. Y'know, when you attack a boss a certain amount of times during a combo, it will get to attack anyways? That's what I call in-depth detail.

So, I'd say it's about 55% Action & 45% RPG.

Rock on!

I'd say 100% action, 100% RPG. The genre called RPG isn't so narrow as to not apply to Kingdom Hearts in it's entirety, it's more than simply character customization and class selection or anything like that. Those are only characteristics typical of RPGs, not something that determines whether a game is an RPG or not. Role playing is as much about playing a role as someone else as it is creating that person and playing it as you want, both are equally RPGs.
