Famitsu.com have recently updated with an article concerning Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep. HEARTSTATION.ORG have translated this article, and it can now be read below.
Link with Disney Character Friends in “Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep”
The exciting Direct Hit Battle System ‘Birth by Sleep’ is an action RPG in which Terra, Ventus and Aqua run about in Disney worlds.
In-battle the ‘command style’ changes, and so, the system is one in which the technique and action changes sharply. This time will be about confirming the second level of this command style!
This is a Terra-specific command style, “Fatal Mode”. It makes the direct attack type techniques are more powerful than normal. By the way, change the command style, and the gauge design also changes. From here, full the gauge up even more, and…
Fill the command gauge in Fatal Mode again, and fill the conditions, and it changes to the second level command stage! The finish move ‘Rock Breaker’, in which attack power increases even more, attacks by making huge rocks push up at wide-ranged enemies.
Here is Ven’s level two Command Style, “Cyclone”. It’s a finishing move that, while spinning, attacks the circumference, even if it hits a wall or something, it rebounds. There are many kinds of Command Style, and there are many finishing moves, too. You can enjoy a battle rich in change.
Borrow Friend’s power with Dimension Link!
When the D-LINK gauge is at full-tank status, you can set the ‘Dimension Link’ in motion, and begin to borrow the power of strong-hearted Disney Character friends. While it’s in motion, other than the Deck Command that can be brought up by the triangle button changing into a special technique, individual rich finishing move is sent out in proportion to the number of ‘symbols’.
In the bottom right of the screen, a few gauges are displayed. The blue gauge amongst them is the D-LINK gauge. The D-LINK gauge fills up by collecting the blue ‘prizes’ that are dropped when enemies are defeated.
Symbols are an item that you can acquire from defeating enemies while linking. Collect them, and a link character window is displayed nearby. In Cinderella’s case, they are tiara and glass slipper symbols. It means that objects connected to original works become the symbols.
If you can obtain up to two symbols per one character, the technique changes depending on how many symbols you have collected. The techniques differ from when you have between zero and one symbol, and when you have two. And, the finishing moves that can be used when linking with people like Stitch or Cinderella, are on a system that works by being started by hitting the button with good timing.
While linking, not only the Deck Commands and such change; the status also rises. The effect of this bonus is put into motion by collecting symbols. In the case of the photo above, with one symbol it is ‘attack up’, and when you have collected the second, a state called‘CP2 Doubled’ effect is added.
The latest issue of Famitsu featured an interview with Tai Yasue, a director for the development of Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep. The interview discusses the Mirage Arena, as well as revealing other information concerning the multiplayer feature. HEARTSTATION.ORG have translated the article and it can now be read below.
-We’re wondering, what kind of playing style were you aiming to have in multiplayer? Tai Yasue (hereby referred to as Yasue): We had all sorts of aims; working with friends to defeat enemies, competing, growing together, getting commands and items, and the like. The ease with which even beginners can participate in various games is one thing we included in depth, right till the end.
-How many people can play at the same time?
Yasue: Even other than the ‘arena’ we introduced this time, we are preparing many kinds of games that can be played in multiplayer. The number of people changes depending on the contents of that, so please wait for further news.
-Can more than one participant choose the same character?
Yasue: There are no restrictions on the character you can choose, so you can play as the same character. The world of ‘Mirage Arena’, which we introduced this time, has a special premise, so only here can the same type of character gather. The name of the world is a hint towards this premise.
-Please explain about Mirage Arena.
Yasue: It’s a new type of world, different to the worlds in ‘Kingdom Hearts’ up until now. It’s a mysterious place with many riddles, and we are preparing exclusive enemies and exclusive maps other than the lobby. The same type of character gathering, fighting under special rules; it’s a special world, ‘removed from reality’.
-Why are the figures in armour, here?
Yasue: There’s a deep reason that has something to do with the story, but, it’s a secret (laughs). The armour isn’t only to protect the body from enemies, and that’s all I’ll say for now.
-Before, it had been said that single player takes about 15 hours to complete. How long do you think multiplayer lasts?
Yasue: Just like the number of people playing at once, there are many ways to enjoy multiplayer, and so to put it simply, I can’t really answer that at this stage.
-Because the level of ‘Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days’ could be adjusted by oneself, progressed people and those who weren’t could play together. What is this game like?
Yasue: In multiplayer, there is a number of kinds of games, and there are ones in which progressed people and non-progressed people can play together with the same strength, and there are ones in which they cannot. From the early stages of the game, there is contents for both people who want to play with multiplayer, and people who want to play after having made their character grow.
-Are there elements such as game rule changes, like there were in ‘358/2 Days’?
Yasue: The games that can be played in multiplayer are all played after first deciding rules. Even in the same game, you can enjoy completely different ways of playing depending on the rules. So that people don’t get bored with it, we have prepared a great number of rules.
-Is there a network connection element, such as mission downloads?
Yasue: There aren’t any plans concerning that. But, we are packing the game with enough contents for this not to be necessary.
-What will we be able to do in the demos that can be played at Tokyo Game Show 2009?
Yasue: In the demos, the story modes of Aqua, Terra and Ventus, and co-operating with other players to fight in the arena can be played. I especially want people to take notice of Aqua, who you haven’t had a chance to play as until now! Aqua fights in a feminine style, completely different to that of Terra and Ventus, and you can experience a new Disney World that hasn’t appeared in any ‘Kingdom Hearts’ until now. Also, the co-op arena battles are also very heated, and so those who can make it to the meeting place, please take the challenge! There are strong enemies which you cannot win against if you do not help each other, and so you can taste a different flavour of excitement to single play.

--”An exciting battle system” Talking about BbS’s new system: This time we will be revealing more about the second level of the Command system, and the D-LINK (Dimension Link) system that has been a mystery up until now.
--”There are two levels of Command Styles”
When the Command gauge reaches MAX, and you’ve fulfilled the requirements, your Command Style will change. If the gauge fills up a second time, and again when you’ve fulfilled the requirements, you will change to the high level Command Style. In Terra’s case, the first level is called “Fatal Mode”, where in his Finish move him jumps up high and then slams the keyblade into the ground. The second level is called “Rock Breaker”, where floating rocks hit all the enemies in the area for the Finish move. For Ven, his first level is “Speed Rave”, where during his Finish move he attacks several times, and then attacks with a radiating beam of light. The second level is called “Cyclone”, where he uses a spin attack against all enemies in the area.
“An explosive Finish move!”
“You can change into a stronger second level Style!!”
“Riding the light!”
“A Command Style that’s almost like a Tornado”
--”Borrowing your companion’s power with the Dimension Link!”
Once the D-LINK gauge is full, you can activate the “Dimension Link”, where you can borrow the power of Disney characters that are your friends. When activated all of your Deck Commands will change to special moves, and you can perform special Finish moves based on how many Symbols you’ve collected. The characters you can borrow powers from will increase as you play the game. This time we’ll be introducing #626 (Stitch) and Cinderella.
#636 (Stitch) 1 Symbol = Shotgun, 2 Symbols = Spaceship
When you have 0~1 Symbols, you can activate “Reflect Beam”. If you press the button that appears on the screen at the right time, a beam that can reflect objects will appear. When you have 2 Symbols you can activate “Ohana Beam”. Buttons will go from right to left, and if you’ve hit them all a sound wave will come from the a ukulele and attack your enemies. It seems you can use both at the same time. The Commands you can use are mostly Thunder-types. “Thunder Blitz”, “Stun Blade”, and “Esuna” are the first ones you get. Also, there are effects when you are in D-LINK, with 1 Symbol giving you an “Attack Up”, and 2 Symbols giving you “CP x 2”.
“You can connect to Stitch via D-LINK”
“Get two Symbols”
“Get more power by being succesful!”
-- Cinderlla (1 Symbol = Tiara, 2 Symbols = Glass Slippers)
When you have 0~1 Symbols you can activate “Dream Sparkle”. Raise enemies up into the sky by a magic light. At 2 Symbols you can activate “Dream Waltz”, where you will spin making a magic vortex. With either one, when you’re suppose to start the Finish move, the Carriage will appear. Pressing the button at the right time is important. It seems there are a lot of moves particular to Cinderella? Just by the screenshots I can se “Fairy Cure”, “Fairy Step”, “Wish Turn”, and “Wish Shot”. With “Wish Turn”, you gather power and then release it in a spin attack.
“With Cinderella!!”
“When you Link there are special Deck Commands”
-- Comment from co-director Yasue:
“We’re coming up on the final stage of development, and now we’re able to see the game as a whole. Even the developers are surprise about just how much we’ve put into this game. Many different ideas have become reality, and it’s like we’re combining chemicals with all these new systems that we’re trying out here. We’ve only just begun introducing the new game system and worlds to you. And we’re going to continue introducing more of the game to you soon, so wait for it!”
Nomura/Yasue Interview
-- So Terra’s clothes are red, Ven’s are yellow, and Aqua’s are blue. These are similar colors to what we saw in KHII with Sora’s Form changes. Do these indicate similar fighting styles?
Nomura: No, nothing like that. We just matched colors to each element that is in their names, Earth, Wind, and Water, so their “image color” ended up being red, yellow, and blue respectively. Regardless of their name element attacks, much like the earth named Terra has power based moves, we’ve made each of their abilties with a specific image in mind.
-- How do they actually get to other worlds?
Nomura: There are no Gummi Ships, they do have a special way of getting there. It’s something like the Corridor of Darkness that Organization XIII uses.
-- This is a story set even before the first game in the series, will some of the same worlds be appearing in this game?
Nomura: Yes, of course. Even though it’s the same world, however, since the time and the place will have changed it will feel new.
-- Do you think it’s best to watch the original movies of the new worlds that will be appearing in this game?
Nomura: No, I don’t think it’s necessary. Although, “Experiment 221” in Stitch’s world, also named Sparky, can only be seen in the sequal. In that case I think it will be more enjoyable if you’ve already seen the original.
-- In “KH Birth by Sleep” will there be more new mysteries, or more previous mysteries being answered for us?
Nomura: Hmm, I wonder. Well I haven’t counted them so I don’t know the exact number, but there will be a lot of mysteries answered. But there will also be many mysteries that will deepen, so because of that perhaps you could say they’ve increased. We’ve already given you plenty of hints in previous games, so people with good sense will probably already understand.
-- I see. Of course, people who start the series with “KH Birth by Sleep” will be able to enjoy it with no problems, right?
Nomura: Of course. Just like “KH 358/2 Days”, it has a different main character from Sora, so I think it would be easy to get into. If “KH Birth by Sleep” is your first game, I’d like you to go on after that to play the first KH game.
-- So, when will the release date be?
Nomura: Well, we had to balance it with the release date of “FFXIII”, so once that was decided, we decided on January 2010 for BbS. We are still trying to figure out what day it will be.
-- Will you be able to use the same data with both multiplayer and single player?
Yasue: Multiplayer and single player are completely linked together, so all the items, commands, and character growth you receive in one will go over into the other.

A recent issue of Famitsu magazine featured an article on the upcoming Kingdom Hearts game for PSP, Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep. This article included an interview with the series' director, Tetsuya Nomura, where he discusses the development of the game. HEARTSTATION.ORG have translated this article, and thanks to them, you can read it below.
-A 2010 release has finally been decided upon, hasn’t it. Nomura: At the end of the year is ‘FFXIII’, and I think you’ll be able to enjoy ‘Birth by Sleep’ in January.
-By the way, about when in January?
Nomura: Hmm… I hope it’s earlier. It shouldn’t be as late as February, so please wait just a little longer.
-Board game-type screens, and battles where Disney characters are co-operated with and the like; many exciting scenes have been appearing. It seems a great many elements have been put in, doesn’t it.
Nomura: No, no, what we’ve unveiled so far is only just the beginning. Particularly this time, where we displayed a test-play of multiplayer, there is no downloadable content, but, it is packed full of more than enough things to enjoy playing. You can also play that board game-type content in multiplayer.
-How loaded… will it fit on one UMD1?
Nomura: According to the staff, it should fit somehow (laughs). Well, we’re still making it, or course, so we don’t know for sure how much it will take up.
-In the pictures, the new samurai-like character that appeared was a point of interest.
Nomura: He’s the master of the three protagonists, isn’t he. As for the voice, I was able to get a voice actor whom I was keeping in mind for when a suitable role came up, but I unfortunately couldn’t ask to do any work, to cover it.
-Speaking of voicing, Master Xehanort’s apprentice finally spoke…
Nomura: That voice was… my own.
-Huuuh?!
Nomura: Of course that was a lie (laughs). It’s a surprise, so please let me keep it a secret.
-That must mean there’s some kind of gimmick about it, doesn’t it. Moving on, we were also finally able to play as Aqua, weren’t we. In the test play, our eyes popped at how her clothes were gaping open at the back.
Nomura: Ah, we plan to revise that, because the design is changing. Because it’s turning into an over-sexy version, at the moment.
-Perhaps there will be some people who think that’s a pity (laughs). And so, what is the state of development?
Nomura: It’s progressing satisfactorily. This time, because of the order of release dates, there’s are parts that must wait, and there were contents that I haven’t been able to show you yet, so we will put out best efforts into the winter event.
