  1. The Pick for Jan 23rd: Mind MGMT #7 Writer: Matt Kindt Artist: Matt Kindt Cover Artist: Matt Kindt Why it's my pick of the week? I've said this before but I'll say it again Mind MGMT was the surprising comic for 2012 for me and become one of favourite comics out there maybe my favourite. So, the main character Meru is crime writer who searches for the truth behind a mysterious airline flight and discovers a secret government agency of super spies, espionage, and psychic abilities which is Mind MGMT and if that sounds like it could be confusing and puzzling don't worry you're right and that's great thing. Now with the intro out of the way what makes Mind MGMT a stand out is just how much content is in single issue and how it take advantage of the comic format. Take this issue for example while it still has a story that from a design point of view like any other comic it also has for the first half of the issue has black and white drawings at the bottom of the page (down in the gutters) which tells an additional story about how the letters that are delivered and their dangers, while another side has excerpts from a crime novel and that's not all it also includes like past Mind MGMT issues a 2 pg case file about a Mind MGMT agent as well on the back on comic questionnaire filled out by an agent that appears in the issue. Even in the story itself you'll have to re-read it couple times just to catch all of pieces of Kindt is putting in his art and writing. It should be noted that this is a jumping on point for the series and Kindt does good job with opening page with 20 panels explaining everything you need to know about the series. The story in Mind MGMT may not be for everyone due to it being a mystery and keeping the reader in the dark giving them enough answers to want to read the next issue but if you're like me and enjoy the mystery surrounding this world you will love the story Kindt is telling. In this issue Meru after losing her memories explores why letters are coming to her house and who is sending them which follows chain that leads to the ad man that used to work for Mind MGMT and that's all going to say without spoiling it but it keeps up unpredictable nature of story Kindt as been telling where anything can happen which is exactly the feeling i want from story like this. The way writing fluidity moves from page to page keeping you invested in characters and story making you not want to put comic down. Also when Matt Kindt explains things it feels gripping and important to the story and not feeling like exposition dump. The another thing that love about Mind MGMT is sense of history and depth that Kindt has put in this alternate world he has created. The pieces of Mind MGMT he has shown me makes me want to see more this world and all the another agents that worked for this agency. I love seeing recruiting and people discovering their powers and where their story leads. The story feels like puzzle which ends up being amazing thing. So now Matt Kindt's art is a acquired taste you'll either love his gentle lines, ones that at times almost look like sketches drawn in ink with their graceful patterns and curves or you'll find that his art lacks detail and doesn't look like the art from big two or it doesn't makes you want to stare at pages. To be honest i love his art for reasons i said and water colours look nice and different from the other comic I'm reading .The way Kindt layout the out page are treat with panels bleeding into other and feel fluidity which pick the right time to go to flashback and you can tell it's flashback when their being used. The art fits the world Kindt has created and for me i rather have no one else be doing this comic than him. Mind MGMT is in every single way one of the most unique and wonderful comics out there and feels like no other comic you can find and that sucks for another comics out there because Mind MGMT shows just how to make perfect series to read in issues. 4. Thanks, That's weird And you can use comixology for digital comics and still support them. http://www.comixology.com/ But for stuff like Black beetle you would have to use Dark Horse's site since they don't partner up with comicxlogy i hear their site not as good with reading comics which is shame.
  5. The Pick for Jan 16th: The Black Beetle: No Way Out #1 Writer: Francesco Francavilla Artist: Francesco Francavilla Cover Artist: Francesco Francavilla Why it's my pick of the week? Now pulp comics have all but disappeared but if this is the way Francesco Francavilla plans to bring the genre back to life he has done a phenomenal job. This series is about "a pulp hero from a crime filled place called Colt City while in his investigation of two local mob bosses he is interrupted when a mysterious explosion murders them and a pub full of gangsters—taking out most of Colt City’s organized crime in one fell swoop. The Black Beetle tries to whose behind it. Now this comic feels like it came right out of 1930/40's style pulp stories and from the design of the covers both inside and out to the lettering, writing and most importantly the jaw dropping art by Francavilla it captures it perfectly. Francesco Francavilla has become one of my favourite artist working in comics today from his panel layout to the way his art is near perfect capturing emotions, expressions and the way he draws the planning of the Black Beetle's jobs. His art-style captures atmosphere better than any other artist working in comics today with the use of his colouring being heavy on red's, black's and blue's. Which lead to some stunning pages that stared at for minutes per page especially his one and two page spreads. To talk further about the design it always feel like it set in the world that's being build and adds a sense of immersion that makes you feel like your in this world, it also gives the pulp vibe though the posters set it this era. Even with Francesco Francavilla incredible art-style his story doesn't let you down keeping a fun and entertaining story that keeps you on edge on your seat. He makes the Black Beetle a likeable character from the way he talks with joking around attitude but still feels right at home in the world Francvilla has set. His art and writing goes hand and hand to create a great world and setting but some may have problems that we don't know anything about the characters background and what made him a hero or much about the city itself but these questions in-time will be answered and it's not really about those things. To get back to the story itself it remains interesting slowly investing the reader and not getting them overwhelmed. The story gives you enough answers where the mystery is going but opens new ones by the end that you're even more invested in story itself. While i feel that writing didn't always blend well from page to page this small compliant to something that was done so well. It may be early but this series seems that when Eisner time comes this series will be forerunner for awards. It's a fun and entertaining pulp ride that Francavilla has started and if you feel like trying something new this is the comic for you or you just want well done comic. 7. They lost their edge like 5-8 years ago. Western studio's seem to be faster and have more fresher ideas. There's more of focus on downloadable titles in the west as well which is where alot of fresh ideas come from but this could be the original games from japan don't make it out.

  10. The Pick for Jan 9th: Sweet Tooth #40 Story by Jeff Lemire Art by Jeff Lemire Colors by Jose Villarubia & Jeff Lemire Letters by Carlos M. Mangual Cover by Jeff Lemire, Jose Villarubia, & Timothy Truman Why it was the pick: It'll be honest with you, This wasn't amazing week for comics to me. Nothing really blew me away but when i was looking at comics that came out this week i when with the last issue of Sweet tooth since i felt like i had most to say on it. Sweet Tooth if you don't know as been dubbed " Mad Max meets Bambi" where it takes place in a mostly rural post-apocalyptic setting where some creatures are human/animal hybrids. I know that's not great detail but i don't want to spoil anything. With that out of the way, why Sweet Tooth #40 was my pick of the week other than concluding the series in a good way finishing off Gus's story it was really the best art I've seen from Jeff Lemire using all of his different styles which was joy to see. His art has very unique style that separates him from the other artists in comics with a more emotional and indie feel to it. The colors pop especially the two page spread that was one of the nicest I've seen in a while. Lemire's paneling is well done and smooth switching to a top to bottom reading and traditional comic style. While it's not my favourite ending in a comic it got the job done and while the flash forward put somethings under the rug that i would like to see explored it still was interesting ending to great series. The biggest problem I've had in this series is that the pacing can be slow and in an issue not much happens if your not reading it in trade and this issue doesn't suffer the problem since it speeds up to when Gus is a father and finish off telling his life story and his connection to the other characters. Every character ends in place that makes sense and still stays true to the character. The world building and seeing Gus grow up are a joy to see and still stay true to previous issues. The ending may get people in tears and as a very touching ending. I'm big fan of Jeff Lemire and this was comic that made me fan of him, And can't wait for his next monthly indie series and Green Arrow.
  11. It's one of the best games of last year if not the best.
  12. From Ifanboy: http://ifanboy.com/articles/breaking-dan-trachtenberg-to-direct-y-the-last-man/ "In some exciting news on the comics movie front, Deadline is reporting that Dan Trachtenberg will be directing the film adaptation of the Vertigo Comics series Y: The Last Man, written by Brian K. Vaughan (currently writing Saga) with art by Pia Guerra. This was a surprise to us for a couple of reasons. First, all indications were that nothing was happening with Y: The Last Man on the film front. Second, Dan is actually a buddy of ours, as the co-host of the defunct Totally Rad Show, we spent many a years at parties, events and other things related to both having shows on Revision3. Considering that and the amount of time I’ve spent with Dan talking about his aspirations at directing, I can assure Y: The Last Man fans that he’s a great choice for this and will do the best job he can. I can’t wait to see what comes from this." He's well known for directing Portal: No escape
  13. Daredevil: End of Days #4 (of 8) Written by Brian Michael Bendis & David Mack Art by Klaus Janson, Bill Sienkiewicz (w/ guest Alex Maleev) Colors by Matt Hollingsworth (Note: Sorry this took a while to come out) Why it was my pick of the week? If you don't know Daredevil is my favourite superhero and it mostly has to do with Bendis's run with the character, that is one of favourite runs on any comic. This series continues what Bendis did with character a decade ago and it hasn't missed a beat story wise. The plot in-case you don't know is about Ben Urich is trying to find out what Daredevil's last words meant which was "Mapone" when he was brutally murdered by Bullseye. The series is going though every important character to Daredevil and Matt Murdock seeing if they know the anwser to his final words and this issue did it best out of all of them. While i have been enjoying the series it took this issue for me to love it due to me getting use to the art and story finally started really clicking with me. It easily the best noir/crime comic out there at the moment. In the issue it shows Bullseye dead and how he died which adds a layer of creepiness and mystery to this series by having Bullseye hire a hooker to dress as Elektra and shot out his brains while referencing to one of the most famous moments in the characters history. It's great touch and adds to depth to the mystery the series has going. With appearance of the Punisher at the end leading to the cliff-hanger feels just like the old daredevil and making me look forward to the next issue. The art has a 90's touch that i finally have gotten used to and I'm really starting to like with a nice mix of painted art added in. Bendis and Mack writing is top-notch every one feels in character and following Ben as he tries to figure out the mystery has great move on their part. They have created something great and with series hitting the half way point i think this could be one of the better Daredevil stories out there.
  14. Pluto, one of the best comics or manga's out there.
  15. Hopefully, have high hopes for the series. @ Roxie Yeah the walking dead had strong year, it still remains unpredictable and Negan is an interesting villain.
  16. I starting reading it when started stopped because it wasn't my thing. I've tried other issues since than and while i think the series has gotten better it still isn't still not my thing or what i want in a team book, It's not the best art i've seen from Jim Lee either. I do enjoy the back-up on Captain Marvel and #0 most from the series. I am looking forward to Scott Snyder and Jim Lee Superman comic though.
  17. What if for someone who casually follows the series and is like well i remember playing 1st and 2nd one so i should play 3rd one or doesn't want to buy handheld for one game. So if they get loss it's developer fault on not catching them up and trying to be at least helpful or enjoyable for someone playing their game being a new fan or not. A series is always going to need new players or it will die out.
  18. Man Of Steel being the only superhero movie i care about and other movie their probably going to be some good ones
  19. 8) Hawkeye Hawkeye by Matt Fraction,David Aja and Javier Pulido is one those special comics that focus on a character when their not being superhero. It's one of funniest comics from the big two and feels like one of a kind comic. David Aja brings more of a indie design to hawkeye with pages that have up to 10 panels per page and Fraction that has very light and airy read which helps the series give it it's certain atmosphere. 7) Daredevil Mark Waid's Daredevi received Best Single Issue, Best Continuing Series, and Best Writer at the Eisner's and with the artist this series has and how Waid has recreated this character their isn't much more to say. 6) Sixth Gun Brian Hurt and Cullen Bunn's Sixth Gun has little bit of everything from western to supernatural to horror to action/adventures but it never loses track of it's characters and adds character development when needed. It's one of constant comics out there and with it's silent issue was great display of how great the comic is. 5) I, Vampire I, Vampire is best comic in new 52 and it's most underrated one they got, With it's need to change the status quo every six issues the story remains unpredictable and art is most constant in new 52 being only comic with one artist doing all of the issues. It breaths new air into Vampire genre and still has sense of fun about it. 4) American Vampire Now Scott Snyder and Rafael Albuquereque are one issue way to taking a one year break from American Vampire and while that's a heart breaker it's great time to catch up on the series. With the mix of American history and vampires it's one of most interesting stories out there with it changing from decade to decade while capturing with decade perfectly. This year we saw 1950's in American Vampire and it was maybe best decade the series did. 3) Locke and Key Still one of the best comics out there, and this being in it's final mini series it will be sad to see it go. 2) Mind MGMT The surprise hit of me in 2012 was Mind MGMT i picked it up since it sounded interesting and it was light week. After i read first issue of the series i fell in love with it, it was felt new and fresh and had most interesting mystery where i still don't know anwser but can't help but read on. The history Matt Kindt has created it just fascinating with a government agency of spies who have psychic abilities formed during or after World War 1. The art is simple but still has details and fits the series he has imagined. If Mind MGMT continues the way it is it probably end up as one of my favourite comics. 1) Saga Saga is an epic space opera/fantasy comic book series created by writer Brian K Vaughan and artist Fiona Staples. And well it's so much better than any other comic out there it's not even fair. It does everything so well that it's always comic i look forward to the most month in and month out and it's only it's first year.
  20. Not counting OGN like Tales of Sand, Parker: The Score and The Underwater Welder Runners Up 20) Peter Panzerfaust 19) Wonder Woman 18) Revival 17) Stumptown 16) The Walking Dead 15) Punk Rock Jesus One of the most interesting comics i read this year and with one less to go it will probably decide how much i like this series. 14) Winter Solider What makes Winter Solider great other than this being final story Ed Brubaker does for Marvel and him doing story that feels like his classic Captain America run which is one of the best in comics is the art team lead by Butch Guice who is doing some of his best work. 13) Fatale The other series Ed Brubaker is his creator owned series with Sean Phillips. It's noir crime story but with supernatural twist like the other comics they did it's great comic on all fronts. 12) Batman Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo's Batman has been one of the best superhero comics and one of the best comics out of DC since it started. With the introduction of Harper Row, Joker attacking Bat family and Batman going crazy from bunch of owls this series has been interesting and has had of great moments. 11) Before Watchmen: MinuteMen & Silk Specter I don't care about the baggage of this series, a great series with fantastic art and writing is all you need for me to enjoy it which is what these two have. Give Cooke and Connor credit for making a great prequels to watchmen. 10) The Rocketeer Pretty much all you need to know about the funniest superhero comics out there and also one of the best. With there being another mini series of Cliff and the gang things are looking good for this series of mini-series. 9) Rachel Rising Probably the most underrated comic out there and maybe my favourite work by Terry Moore.
  21. Here's my opinion on 3rd season of the walking dead 1) Hopefully they'll kill Andrea off or fix her character and make her more like her comic counterpart. 2) This is best season of the walking dead yet, It's fixed most of problems I've had with the show but they still have problem writing female characters. 3) The approach to the Governor is well done and makes more developed character than he was in the comics. 4) Also don't look into much of cliff-hanger to first half of season 3
