Yeah, you can only play wireless with the PSP. You need the PS3 and ad-hoc party I believe
Eh I've once made a save before every boss fight in KH2, but I've never made a save for the start of every world. Kinda similar so its a pretty good idea imo
He's not forced, therefore I would have to say he's optional

Terra's my favorite because he's the only one who takes skill. The other two = infinite dodge.

If you haven't beaten everything else in the mirage arena, I recommend doing that. It's probably your best shot if it isn't working how it should.
Roxas may not have completely 'grasped' the concept of recalling his keyblade at optimal times, hence why he is surprised when Sora recalls his during their fight, which allows him to be taken down. I'd say he just hasn't mastered his keyblade use.
