When did Nomura first say KH3 is a thing?

Recommended Posts

I've been curious about this for a while now. What I mean is, when did he say Kh2 wasn't the last numbered title and KH3 will be the next numbered title (obviously). It's always bothered me that people say that we haven't been waiting for KH3 that long but I feel that the moment someone says something is going to be a thing regardless of if they actually have work done on it or if they know for a fact that they will be doing it eventually (not if they are saying that they wish and/or hope that it's going to be something they can do, example is ff7 remake and BBS vol. 2 ), the timer starts ticking. I know that we have had other titles to preoccupy us but still in the back of our heads we are still thinking about kh3 and are still waiting on it. Plus, we wouldn't have even known KH3 wouldn't have been the next game after the one we were playing. When I first played BBS I thought KH3 would have been the next game after it, and then I thought the same thing for recoded and so on until KHX was cannon. I hope I'm explaining this well enough so I can get limit across clearly, it's late and I just finished hosting a party.

I'll have to find it but the first time he mentioned it was in an interview right after KH2FM+ came out in Japan, but only to say the next title in the series would not be KH3. Fans had expected it ever since KH2 which was foolish because unlike KH, KH2 would have been a perfectly natural stopping point, the threat was defeated and Riku and Sora had returned home.

He did not confirm KH3 for a long time, however nor did he ever deny it. I belive the first real confirmation was in 2012 when he said that 3D as well as the previous 3 games (Days, BbS and Re:coded) would all tie in to KH3

But FFVIIR and 0.2 are terrible examples of what you're trying to say. The hype for a FFVII remake was born from a PS3 tech demo that was never meant to be taken as confirmation of such a project (much like Agnis' Philosophy for PS4) and Nomura outright said after BbS that "a story for volume 2 exists, but it may not be told as a game", it could have been told as a movie, a comic, a novel or just custcenes in another game. Neither where confirmed until their official announcements

Technically speaking, Nomura did not state KH3 as "being a thing" other than something he would like to get to some day when he has time until roughly around the time Birth by Sleep was released and Re:Coded was starting to become the next hot game in the series. He had said that around the time of Birth by Sleep's creation he had some ideas and scenarios floating about his head, but actual planning and pre-production did not start until roughly around 2010. Now technically ideas and concepts had been thought up and discussed as early as 2006 after KH2 Final Mix + was released in Japan, but KH3 wasn't stated as a clear objective yet, especially with Final Fantasy XV, then known as Final Fantasy Versus XIII, as his main big project to get out for Square Enix as soon as possible. This game would ultimately be the one roadblock that would prevent KH3 from becoming a solid idea until development for it started speeding up around 2012 when the big changes to the project started happening. However, in the Birth by Sleep Ultimania, released roughly around 2010-2011, Nomura stated that there were currently 3 new titles in planning for KH3, at that time anyway. The first two ended up being Re:Coded and Dream Drop Distance, but the third was confirmed at that time to be Kingdom Hearts 3. So at that point they made a promise that KH3 WAS going to be one of their next projects they planned to work on. Nomura still said that more focus had to be directed towards FF XV, but he promised that they would work to get it and KH3 done as soon as possible. For a while that's all that was told until around 2012 when Nomura was asked about when KH3 might ever get released, and the only answer he gave at the time was that KH3 will definitely not get released until some time after 2012, the series' 10th anniversary. Sure enough though, at E3 2013, the announcement trailer confirmed to all that KH3 was actually in early development, though Nomura later admitted that it may have been a bit too early to announce it, as they barely had anything to show off. It wouldn't be until a year or two later when they changed the graphics engine that they would start developing and revealing more details.

But basically KH3 became a concrete goal roughly around mid-to-late 2010, with Birth by Sleep being the first stepping stone to intentionally garner hype for the future of Kingdom Hearts.

i always thought the fans created the idea of a Kingdom Hearts 3 and Nomura, aiming to please the fans, set out to make it.

in the most convoluted way possible, of course.

KH2 had such a complete ending and i feel like since then, Nomura has just been making games in order to justify KH3 even existing. i wonder why he didn't just write off KH, CoM and KH2 as one trilogy and then move on to write an all new KH story, instead of wallowing in the solid story he had going with the first three games.

the first three games formed a pretty tight trilogy and the new games just continue to pile on layer after layer of plot when it probably would've been better to start with a clean slate. i'm sure it would have been possible to incorporate some of these newer plot points into a better written plot.

hindsight is 20/20 though, so i want to see how Nomura ends this...."saga" i guess.

Actually it was never a definitive ending. Nomura intended the ending to KH2 to leave open the possibility of a continuation. He at the very least thought "maybe someday, Kingdom Hearts 3". In fact actually, Birth by Sleep was coming about for it's own sake, Nomura wanted to tell that story as soon as he was done with KH2, it wasn't made to "justify KH3's existence" or anything. He had always had the intention to continue the story, but first he wanted to focus on the origins and untold stories of particular characters first. In a sense fans started generating the hype for a KH3, but Nomura was developing the idea of one as early as 2006, he just became more aware of fans' interest with KH3 over time. It's not like he was sloppily making up games to keep people busy while he figured KH3 out, he had a desired means of continuing the story and had to balance that with the work he had on other projects. It's never just "well the fans want it so I guess I better give it to them. But I'm gonna make them sweat for it though, lolz!"

I forgot the guy that said it but they were important( I think), he said they would like to do a remake of FF7 but it would be to expensive to make. I still find it funny Nomura didn't know he was directing it, I like to imagine him watching E3 with a bag of chips and then he sees his name xD. BBS vol. 2 Nomura said he had a story to share but he didn't know when or if that would happen. There were probably better examples I could have given but I couldn't think of any at the moment.

OK, so around 2010 - 2011. I'm not being impatient or anything, I just feel people should be able to say they have been waiting for this game for a long time in a positive or neutral light without being flogged because of the people that are saying it in a negative way. As long as they aren't rushing the game, which it seems they aren't, that's all I care about.

There's no problem with being excited, the problem comes when someone can't separate how long they've been waiting with how long the game has actually been in development. Some people act like Square started making the game in 2006 and have just been dragging their feet.

I think people shouldn't consider themselves to be waiting for a game until they know for a fact that said game exists and is in production.

Every comment thread I see on the wait for KH3 is basically, random Internet person: "I've been waiting to 10 years! Enough with the spin-offs and remasters, just give us KH3 already!"

Me: "Okay, but the game wasn't even in development until 2013, so 7 of those years are completely on you" In fact, I've actually had someone tell me flat out that the details of when it started development are irrelevant to how long the game has taken to come out.

As a side note, I'm almost kind of hoping that when the release date is announced its somewhere in 2018, just to see the Serius Black memes. Though I wouldn't object to a 2017 release at all.

"Hurry up troll enix where is my KH3 i've been waiting nearly 10 years why haven't you given it to me yet?"

Well the game wasn't even a thing until E3 2013, so by default we've all been waiting since then. They haven't been making the game for 10 years and pre production only started in 2010. They may have been waiting 10 years, but the game has only been in development for 3 years.

Lmao Kingdom I found this for you. This should answer your question, it's from 2006, October 30th

Something about that just doesn't feel right, but I don't know why...
