Square Enix is shifting development of Final Fantasy VII Remake in-house. According to several comments made during a special broadcast, it was revealed Naoki Hamaguchi, who was previously in charge of the development for Mobius Final Fantasy, will be taking on the top developmental role for the highly-anticipated remake. He made the following comments during the show:

“So far, development (for FFVIIR) has been carried out mainly with the support of external partners. However, in view of factors such as improving quality when the product goes into mass production in the future, the company has decided to shift the developmental system back to within the company, so as to maintain a stable schedule and have control over factors such as quality. We will be forming a robust system within the company to properly carry out the development.”

It seems Naoki Hamaguchi will be focusing his attention on Final Fantasy VII Remake in light of recent recruitment listings looking for various staff positions. It’s currently unknown what this means for Square Enix’s previous collaboration with outsourcing companies such as CyberConnect2.

And Y'know what that meaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaans

Hmm, well this is an interesting update. So in other words, does this mean that Nomura is no longer involved with FFVII Remake? If that's the case, then that means he can put all of his attention into Kingdom Hearts III, and if that's the way it goes, then I'm glad!

And well, let's just hope the ones handling VII Remake don't screw things up for fans of the original, ya know?

A lot of fans of the original, myself included, are already really disappointed/angry about what's been shown. Between the facts that it's being released as multiple games just to grub more money off of fans (The "won't fit on one disc" excuse isn't valid since the original game was on three discs) and the complete change in genre, a number of people have already lost interest in the remake. Doesn't help that, odds are, it's going to fit into the new FFVII Compilation canon instead of being more focused on the original game's storyline, and a lot of fans of the original are mad about how Cloud's character was changed a lot as they kept expanding the universe.

It's what happens when you deliver a half-assed game.

Nomura shares a majority of that blame too y'know not just Tabata cuz he's the one that left a mess impossible to fix behind him for Tabata to handle

Not to mention that the game will be released digitally too so the whole "Can't fit on one disc" is complete bullshit cuz FFVII isn't that big

Heck the map of that game barely equates to even half of the Bionis in Xenoblade

And it's a shame, too. Like, if the game had been worked on for one more year, it would've launched with all this content, and people probably wouldn't be as mixed about the game as they feel now, ya know? I personally enjoyed the game, but felt that many plot points were missing, ya know?

Oh wow, so in actuality, there's just as much worry over the Remake as there is for Kingdom Hearts III, eh? Hmm, I didn't think that VII Remake was going through such drastic things! I mean sure, I knew about the whole episodic format, but to change up the gameplay system as a whole is intriguing! I wonder how the end result will be! But yeah, dividing VII into multiple Episodes seems like a bad way to approach a beloved entry in the Final Fantasy franchise, ya know? So there may be many people that have mixed feelings on this, ya know?

Quite. When I say half-assed, I mean it quite literally. Half of it was good, the remaining was horrible and ambiguous.

Well, let's hope that Square learns from what happened with XV to ensure that other games in their lineup don't suffer as much, ya know?
