If it was half a cake, then part of the "1/2" would be cut off, but yet, it's whole. And therefore, there is three quarters of the cake remaining.

Here is the WHOLE cake:

The dot-dot in the center represents the "1/2" thats written with frosting. Notice how its dead center?

In the actual picture, the "1/2" is still entirely whole... and part of the cake is cut off. But since the "1/2" is dead in the center, if the cake was actually cut in half, the writing would ALSO be cut in half. Meaning that a full three quarters of the cake still exist...

 

Im ranting, aren't I.

But then it would just say "1", which wouldn't make much sense.
