I'm convinced seasonal depression mostly exists because we wake up when it's dark, go sit in a class or office and don't come back home until its dark

And it's often cloudy so, even through the windows it's dark in the daytime

The fact that February is shorter is the only solace

Christmas/solstice was definitely needed to give people some sanity, otherwise why else would they make up a birthday for Jesus Christ
