I'm not a fan of it when it happens to comic book characters, but one off Disney films are rather less established. Tbh it doesn't make any real difference to the film whatever race ariel is, but it would for mulan and Aladdin.

And in Aladdins case, the original was such a stupid mish mash of the most stereotypical views of "brownness". Some course correcting was warranted here

I know the argument is out there that (white people have had their time.) but literally the only issue I have is them changing up the characters lol.. I don’t care at all about the race.. it’s just a bit hypocritical to outcry when they whitewash something.. but the second a white character is changed. It’s praised

And yeah I'm not gonna watch it anyway, wish disney would stop with all the remakes lmao

Me too.. it’s kinda ridiculous they are trying to milk these classics..

And none of the live action are living up to the cartoons anyways haha

It's easy to equivocate the two different sides of the argument like that, but in reality it's far more nuanced

Some people are enjoying the remakes so I suppose they are worth something

And they make Disney bank anyway

I mean i guess it has already been done with Cinderella. Years ago there was the black version. And I actually quite liked that one

Damnnnn this deal is once in a lifetime!! Jumping on this ASAP

Like I said, I don't appreciate it when it happens with comic book characters but they are way more established than a one off film character.

Also, if there's characters that are black or brown but who's race has absolutely nothing to do with anything about them, not even their name (like some brown characters in American sitcoms) then there's not a real issue with whitewashing. However that very very rarely happens

Yea you right, I mean it’s a sticky subject for sure.. I’m not gonna be one of those typical white people that are like “ohhhh they are black instead white? Well I am NOT seeing that mess... Murcia”

But I just don’t like the change up of some of my favorite characters for political reasons and no other is all.

That's your own assumption

What's the political reason?

I mean why else would they change her up?

They haven't changed her up

Ariel doesn't exist

They picked an actor to play a mermaid

A mermaid whose skin color doesn't matter

Lol.. well yes, true I suppose.. but what if they remade princess and the frog. And made her white?

Would you think there is no issue?

Like I said, you're equivocating two completely different issues

^

How!

Lol that is exactly the same concept

Being black is central to Tianas character

Yeah I mentioned there's more nuance lmao

The concept is the same sure but the execution won't be

Being Chinese is central to Mulan's character

The setting of a black girl working for her dream in New Orleans is the same as...Atlantica?

The firetruck

So because there is apparently no princess that is centered around being white. It’s totally okay to change any of them?

Also, if there's characters that are black or brown but who's race has absolutely nothing to do with anything about them, not even their name (like some brown characters in American sitcoms) then there's not a real issue with whitewashing. However that very very rarely happens

It means Mup, that you're making it more political than it ever was

Yes

Well like you said, cinderella and beauty and the beast were rather culturally appropriate for the setting and that's fine. But Atlantica is completely made up

So why not?

For example, I wouldn't be mad at all if a live action full metal alchemist had European cast for riza, Ed and Al etc

Maybe not Roy mustang because he looks quite Japanese

These things are nuanced and it's silly to pretend like it's one size fits all

I mean. I may be making the matter too light.. but it just seems silly to me

You're the one being silly, so ah
