so heres the thing, riku gained the way to dawn by accepting the light and darkness in his heart and walking the way to dawn the best as he could.

I'd like to think that a keyblade of light is weakened while in the realm of darkness.

riku acomplished that goal of walking the road to dawn, this means he has perfect control, for this reason the road to dawn no longer had a place in his heart and broke, meaning he needed a keyblade more suited to him
