it doesn't say. She calls them 'things' in chapter 1 when they are surrounding her but in chapter 18 suddenly she knows everything even about Sephiroth

The narrative in FF7R doesn't explain jack shit about him which is bad storytelling. If they are insistent on showing him this early they needed to show the Nibelheim incident too and they didn't.
