Right, it's vague. Just like it's vague for the characters you are playing in the game, it's vague for new players too. It's answers that you are (most) likely getting in the next games. Only difference is is that old players know what they mean, but that shouldn't take away from new players either. At least, that's how I see it.

Because honestly

Aside from the crisis core shit, that whole ending sequence had almost 0 impact on me

I don't really see this as a sequel

At worst I see it as intermingling universes, one where ff7 happens, and one where ff7r happens

But more likely it's just a play at a predetermination and a fight against that, whereas ff7 will show the timeline as fate decided it to be and ff7r is a blind fight against that fate

Like I can't imagine not having played crisis core

Because that ending would've literally not impacted me at all

It would have raised questions such as why this guy have Cloud sword, why aerith is sad, why Cloud is half dead

But the scene they chose to show is the ending of crisis core

ff7r works because ff7 exists in a way

because there's some outer entity that's nudging cloud with his flashes, but it's not like I really see that as needing to play the first game

It's more hinting at here's what's going to happen if you don't fight against fate

The most emotional moment to me in ff7 as a whole

But in no way did I think that because I hadn't played ff7 that the flashes made no sense

Not knowing that scene prior would've ruined the ending a lot for me

It's an impact for old people, but intrigue for new ones. You suddenly have this guy using the Buster sword and then carrying an unconscious Cloud passing by present time Cloud and Aerith. It's a set up for the next game as to who this mysterious person could be, with hints as to who he was earlier in the game.

I don't think that really works tho

cause they said in their sephiroth interview everybody knows who sephiroth is already
