Certainly a take to say square sucked at turn based from 1-9

Like some of them definitely have some faults, 8 has the bizarre levelling up system or 9 where the ATB is slower than it needs to be

ATB is imo a fundamentally flawed system

why would you want to add a system like this in a type of gameplay that is already slow

Is it actually flawed? Or do you just not like it

I mean for God's sake 1 through X or at least 1-6 walked so an entire genre could run

And whatever they didn't pave the way for DQ and SMT took care of the rest

I feel like there's an issue with ATB in the older games because you get into situations where you have a full bar but can't use your moves due to animation locks. It just feels bad. Why have the system in the first place if you can't use the moves. And then other situations where you just have to wait for the bar to fill.

I'm just wondering how this is supposed to be better than X's system or other turn-based games who don't have ATB

I think, I can pop any of those games in and enjoy them

I just don't get how turn-based combat in FF got better through it. I feel like Remake is a great evolution of the system but that shit didn't happen until 2020

I had issues with Remakes combat but, like, I think you just don't like turn based, and that's fine- I don't think Square should never do it though

I love turn-based, just not ATB type turn-based systems

I feel like FFX got it right, but that's just one game

So out of the almost 100 games with FF's name on it, only X had good turn based?

The fun about ATB is that it keeps the "real time" aspect while still doing menu based combat like in turn based game

Like don't get me wrong X is my favorite a lot* for this franchise including combat but like, the *only good one?

I'm just talking about the business unit who made the mainline games which was mostly Sakaguchi's

It still keeps you on your toes when you are trying to go through you and your parties move sets

Sometimes it works like I thought with 7 and other times like 9 it goes too slow so it's pointless

I am curious how octopath 2 will be. I heard a lot of great things. same for dq12

Also X is considered ATB? You could take any time you wanted in that one.
