Even though Nomura has touched on the fact that the Soul Eater transformed into the Way to Dawn, it still isn't explained exactly why this transfiguration occurred, or exactly when.

 

At first I assumed Riku obtained the Way to Dawn during the time lapse between the end of CoM and the middle of Days, but after watching the Days cutscenes, I realized Riku still uses his Soul Eater. Oddly enough, when you play as Riku in Mission Mode, you can equip the Way to Dawn for him.

 

Riku is also shown using the Soul Eater near the end of KH2, but when he reappears in The World that Never Was, he wields the Way to Dawn. What exactly went on here?

 

I also noticed that the Way to Dawn has a Heartless symbol for a keychain. Is this because of it formerly being the Soul Eater?

I believe in an interview Nomura said that Riku obtained Way to the Dawn somewhere between when you fight him in the land of dragons in KHII and when you meet up with him in TWTNW

Long story short, some point later on in the game, Axel returns to TCTNW to try and save Kairi, trades some information about Namine's location in order to gain entrance back into the Organization, and Xemnas leaves. After Xemnas leaves, he has a short encounter and battle against Riku in the White Room. Axel later takes his chance and tries to rescue Kairi, but is intercepted by Saix. The two battle, and Saix stabs him in the chest. Following this, Axel makes it to whatever that place is where he meets Sora. The problem is that there are a few factors that would affect the timeline, like, how long Xemnas took before he fought Riku, how long Axel took before he went off to play hero, and how long he was waiting for Sora afterwards.

 

Without the translations of those chapters though, it seems that the closest and most logical time for Soul Eater to transform into Way to Dawn would be shortly before Axel's death.

Okay now I am mindf*cked. I know the novels are secondary canon or whatever, but this just seems like a huge plot hole to me.

Ok, most of that stuff you just wrote doesn't make any sense, nor is it canon to the series. KingdomLaneLover is right, Riku does get Way to Down pretty much when he fights Sora in the Land of Dragons and when he meets Sora in TWTNW.

No, Riku does not have the Way to Dawn in The Land of Dragons, and KingdomLaneLover didn't even post in this thread...

The novels are indeed secondary canon to the series.

 

I think he got Way to the Dawn when he returned to TCTNW, after full-on accepting both the light and darkness within him in his quest to help Sora.

well my theory is that since the keyblade is the expression of the bearers heart (i think thats what it is ) then as rikus heart changed throughout the game the blade did as well

Says you. Novels are secondary canon to the series. Pretty much anything in them is canon as long as they don't contradict the game, which they don't. Riku clearly did not have Way to Dawn in Land of Dragons, and just because my post doesn't make much sense doesn't mean I'm BSing the entire thing.

 

Well, I understand it anyways. Anyways, I linked you to the original source so that would probably make more sense than how I phrased it.

 

Sequence of events leading up to Way to Dawn's creation:

 

1. Axel returns to The Castle that Never Was and trades Xemnas information about Namine's whereabouts (currently at the Twilight Town mansion) in order to gain admittance back into the Organization. Xemnas accepts the deal and leaves.

2. Riku arrives at the abandoned mansion to protect Namine since he knows of the incoming attack. Xemnas arrives and fights Riku, who still has Soul Eater at this time.

3. Some time later, Axel attempts to rescue Kairi from the dungeons, but is intercepted by Saix. He fails to free her and instead, suffers a serious stab wound through the chest at the hands of Saix. He makes it into Betwixt and Between, where he waits for Sora.

 

The reason none of this appears to be connected is because of the missing chapter translations to fill in the gaps. We have no idea what Sora was doing at this time, only that these events took place shortly before his arrival in Twilight Town on his way to The World that Never Was. However, according to goldpanner, who has referenced the game script and bits and pieces of the KH2 novels, it's seems to be most logical that the transformation occured shortly before Axel's death.

 

That's as clear as I can put it.

Sora might be in Agrabah - Halloween town or in the gummi ship fighting the space nobodies to reach Twilight town (You know how hard was that part )

Well, the thing about Saix dealing a blow to Axel in the chest would explain why he was so exhausted while helping Sora defeat Nobodies.

 

And I don't really know when Soul Eater turned into Way to the Dawn, other than it was sometime between Sora's encounter with Riku and right before Riku's encounter with Saix, when Namine and Kairi were trying to escape from TCTNW.

word. Mindf*ucked to the max. you see ive only played the original game, Re: Chain of memories and Kingdome hearts 2 which in my opinon is the best one "only because of the storyline and the minds that made up that storyline" (ingenious people might i add)

I HAVE A THEORY!!!!

We all know that Riku was chosen to weild a Keyblade, right?

My theory is, when Riku fell to the Darkness, his keyblade changed it's mind and went to Sora.

Near the end of KH2, when Sora meets with Riku, His keyblade decides to return to him. but since Sora had Ven inside him, he could still weild a Keyblade, since Roxas had returned to him.
