It's mostly to do with Cloud's psyche going down the rabbit hole more and remembering Zack way earlier. In North Crater is where his mind gets broken remembering Zack but we don't get that here. I would count that as a big change.

 

Although now I am guessing part 3 will be

him breaking his mind realizing Aerith is actually dead and then we get her proper death with the burial and everything. Including his speech

It didn't go anywhere. Aerith doesn't tell Cloud Tifa talked to her, it doesn't really get brought up when he "remembers him drowning", so like

was a bit much

She did get buried. Cloud just erased that from his mind. The point is that when Cloud realizes Aerith is dead he will remember the burial
