Subbed vs. Dubbed

Recommended Posts

Just out of curiousity, do you prefere to watch animes in subbed or dubbed forms?

I like dubbed better, but I'm cool with watching subbed, depending on the epic-ness of the anime. Yeah, for most things the dialog is better in the subbed versions, but I get kinda bored if I have to read what the characters are saying, and a lot of the time, I like the English voices better, anyway.

It doesn't really matter to me, but normally I'll take the dub if its available, but thats mainly because I like to go off page while watching anime sometimes, so its much more convenient. Otherwise, I don't mind reading the words or anything.

I like the dubs better due to the fact that I speak the language. I end up watching the subbed when I REALLY don't wanna wait for the dubs but I'll still watch the dub when it comes out. And same as

-Ventus- said, I tend to go off page sometimes and if it was subbed I would have to pause, look at whatever I wanted to look at, go back to the page and play the video again -_-

It really depends on which I find to be better. Sometimes the anime's English dub I find better than the original Japanese dub and other times it's the other way around. Some/a lot English dubs seriously are complete shit though which is why I would want to watch the subbed instead. However I'm not saying the Japanese dubs are automatically better. There are sometimes when the voices are so unfitting to me in the original dub and I find the English to be more fitting. But in another view, the dubbed I often remember more from the anime, and I can listen while checking a different webpage at the same time.

Many people complain about english dubs, about how they sound nothing like their original japanese counterparts. Here's what I have to say about that:

Dubbing isn't about imitation, it's about interpretation. Japanese and English voices use different mannerisms, and it's a VA's job to capture the character they are being asked to portray, not imitate their original VA. As such, English voices will usually, in my opinion, come out equal, if not superior, to the Japanese version. On the other hand, when it's in the hands of an evil, soulless company (*cough*4Kids*cough*), the Japanese version will come out on top.

Overall, I will always watch English dubs when avaliable. Unless it's 4Kids.

subbed, the types of animes I watch have bad dubs (If you ever try and watch the Higurashi dub, I pity you.) But there is that occasion that I'll like the dub as well, but since my list of animes watched is still in the single digits, I've watched more subs so far.
