Is a price drop imminent?

It's old news now that PlayStation Vita isn't selling very well in its native Japan. As we already reported, Vita is off to a rocky start, only selling 72,479 in its first week on the market after pushing about 325,000 in its first 48 hours.

This precipitous decline hasn't gone unnoticed in circles outside of the gaming realm. In fact, Forbes tech contributor Tero Kuittinen has written a scathing article titled "Sony in Big Trouble with PS Vita," outlining the problems the company is currently facing with Vita.

Kuittinen notes that Vita's "second week brought devastation," especially when compared to Nintendo 3DS' second week on the market. Nintendo 3DS was widely believed to have had a terrible start, only more recently pushing bigger numbers now that games players want have finally starting arriving. Yet, 3DS sold 370,000 units in Japan in its first week, and 210,000 units in its second. In other words, it beat PlayStation Vita by 45,000 units in its first week, and a massive 137,500 units in its second week.

"That drop off led to steep further sales erosion," the Forbes article notes, "which forced Nintendo to implement an unusually early and steep price cut." This, of course, begs the question if Sony will do the same. Tero Kuittinen thinks that it will. "Sony will likely be forced to cut the price of the PS Vita from 24,000 Yen (~$311) to well below 20,000 Yen (~$259) very soon."

But the problems don't stop there. Kuittinen continues, "The upcoming US launch could be a true debacle for several reasons. Sony has decided to price Vita at $250, higher than the Amazon Kindle Fire. The hottest games like the latest Uncharted are priced at $50, while many other major titles are $40. The pricing seems delusional in light of the Japanese response to the PS Vita."

However, Kuittinen saves perhaps his harshest words for later in his article. "The 3DS should have been a surefire blockbuster in its domestic market -- the summer softness in Japan may have been an early warning sign of the coming global portable market malaise. The disastrous second week of the PS Vita is the second sign." The reason? The Forbes author argues that the rise of the smart phone and tablet markets are much to blame.

But he also argues that Sony should be concerned, as it seems to be on recent word that Sony had no comment when asked about Vita's sluggish sales. "…the portable console market may now have entered an age of permanent, slowly accelerating decline," Kuittinen concludes. "The true test of the industry is the United States, where consumers are embracing games designed for smartphones and tablets. The possible shrinking of the portable game consumer base would hit the runner-up Sony before Nintendo really gets mauled. The rot sets in first at the periphery."

I was too busy exciting over the announcement that the Last Story was coming to NA yesterday, that I almost forgot the Vita came out. I don't have one, but I have a PS3 so feel free to add me on PSN, I'm lizzie1238. The mods will probably close this thread though and say to go to the thread for sharing PSN names.

This. I'll be adding you sometime later.

Count_DiZ. My only online game right now is Golf, though.

Convince me: Is Vita really that great? Can it play PSP Games? Besides the analog sticks and the screen resolution/looks or whatever, how is it different than a PSP?

I don't have a Vita, but I'm 99% sure it's graphics aren't better than PS3.

You know there ARE other games worth purchasing other than just getting a Vita all just for one game ( I know this is probably too early for me to say that). I seriously don't understand that...at all. What kind of person buys a console just to purchase one game when there are a variety of other great games to buy? That's like saying you are buying the Kinect just to purchase Sonic Free Riders. I find that a real waste of money buying a console for 1 game, even if it is KH. I know this is kind of early to say since the Vita just came out, but what if the Vita ends up getting a lot of great games like inFAMOUS, more Uncharted, CoD, mass Effect, ect? I think people should just give the Vita a chance. Just look at 3DS, a lot of people thought it would fail but they were wrong since it's now getting a lot of great games in its library.

The vita personally looks extremely stupid to me. But KH is that important to me that I would get a vita to buy it. {KH is more than just a game to most people} I mean sure there is some games that look cool for the vita, but the only reason I would get it is for a KH game. And then I would get the games that looked nice too. Before BBS came out, I thought the PSP was so stupid. But I got a PSP just for Birth by Sleep and I loved it. And not only that, I am planning on buying games such as Dissidia in the future. Kingdom Hearts is more than just a game to me. It helped me learn and feel better about myself. I remember when my parents were fighting and yelling right in front of me when I was 12. I was playing KH2 during that time, and it just helped me calm down. No other game does that for me. And Kingdom Hearts gives me someone to want to be. I want to be a responsible, caring, nice, and innocent gifted lady just like Aqua, who always care's for her friends. And Kingdom Hearts is what got me into video games and anime. It was my very first video game when I was 4. I remember playing it with my step-brother. I remember him trying to beat Riku in racing. I remember him touching the tree, but then running as fast as he can back to home. Kingdom Hearts helped me remember the good old times in life. Mostly every memory I have back in the day was related to Kingdom Hearts. Hell, I even meet my first true best friend because of that game. So yeah, I don't care. I will definitely buy a console just for a beautiful game like Kingdom Hearts.

I'm getting it next year.

It can, but not UMDs. You have to download them from the PSN Store.

Adding you now, and if I might ask. Does the Golf game come with that Online Pass? Because I'm not spending $10 on it.

So you can't get BBS or Crisis Core, which I've heard are two of the best PSP games.

Okay, I understand that and I respect your opinion on this. But that's still not really the best reason to buy a console for 1 game. There are a variety of good games to choose some. heck, there are games I find better than KH (that being Uncharted, and inFAMOUS 1 & 2, and Mass effect series). Seriously, buy other games other than KH. I mean it's fine that you want KH but there are tons of other games that will have you playing the your console more often. Take the 3DS for example. it has a fine library of games like Super Mario 3D Land, Zelda, Mario Kart, Sonic generations, Starfox, ect. Would you still buy a 3DS just for one game that could eventually get boring after playing it countless times? or would you rather buy the console for tons of great games that will keep you entertained with the 3DS?

I understand. However, personally, I am not really fond on games like Uncharted. They look ok, but is not really worth to me on buying a console for that game. The games for the Vita so far I am not interested what so ever. But if I get a KH game for it, sure I would buy Uncharted and the other games. And the KH game's never get boring to me. I am buying a 3DS just for KH 3D. But I will definitely buy other games for the 3DS. Dead or Alive looks all right. Mario Kart looks great too. But the main, main reason I am getting the 3DS is for KH. You see, Kingdom Hearts also opens my mind to try these other consoles too. If it was not for BBS, I would not have a PSP, and I would not be saving up for Dissidia right now.

I'm not saying the Vita is bad, but seeing as how KH is my favorite franchise, no other franchise (as good as they are) can convince me to get the Vita. Now if a KH game were to come to the Vita, I'd buy the Vita for the KH game (of course), and then buy any great games the system has to offer, just like Aqua7KH said.

Adding you now, and if I might ask. Does the Golf game come with that Online Pass? Because I'm not spending $10 on it.

I don't think so. I didn't check. I'll check the case later.

I plan to get one some time in the future. I want to get the Final Fantasy X remake!

Me too, but I'm just gonna get it on PS3. By the way, it's an HD remaster, not a remake. So they're not remaking the entire game, which kinda sucks.

Hm, yes, I haven't heard too much on it yet. Last I heard people were refering to it as a remake.

Nope, I didn't get one. I did get to try it out at GameStop though. To all of those who have one, I would recommend Gravity Rush/Daze, it is unique and fun to play. Currently it is the only game that even mildly interests me on the Vita.

So, I am interested, what in the world is supposedly so good about the screen. When I played it, I noticed nothing exceptional about it. It was big, and had good resolution, but the touch screen felt pretty much like you can find on an iPod, and I saw nothing special about the OLED screen. That last point is what I am really curious about, 'cause I keep hearing "OMGZ look at taht beutiful OLED SCREEEN! SO VIBRANT AND KRISP and COULORFUL" (*grammar just for emphasis*), when really it just looked like a normal screen, I saw no difference between it and a normal LED.
