This is an edited version of a theory I posted on KHI, might as well share it here.

 

Okay, so, after watching the trailer and looking at the name "Birth by Sleep", I've come up with a theory as to why all of these Xehanorts are lurking in the RoL, and why the original Xehanort isn't in the "real world" to begin with. Before I start, however, whoever doesn't know this, Terranort and Apprentice Xehanort should be considered two separate people . This is a key fact, and this is kind of what I'm basing my theory off of.

 

Let's jump to the BBS Last Episode. Terranort creates a Heartless, the Guardian, and then locks away his heart and becomes Apprentice Xehanort. I'd like to take the moment to emphasize "creates a Heartless". This is important, very important. It is assumed that MX's heart was used to create it, so I'll just call it MX's heartless throughout this theory. Anyways, MX's Heartless was never defeated, only locked away, along with alot of the darkness that came along with it. Which is why Apprentice Xehanort doesn't have golden eyes. Which is why Apprentice Xehanort is a totally separate person from Terranort, because Apprentice Xehanort is essentially Terra while Terranort is MX.

 

Now, why was all that necessary? Well, when Ansem SoD and Xemnas were created from Apprentice Xehanort's heart (Terra's), and eventually defeated, MX should be able to come back right? WRONG.The Heartless that was a product of his heart was never defeated. And we all know what Nomura said about Heartless'/Nobodies having to be defeated for a person to return. And who exactly is his Nobody? Golden eyed boy? Possibly (won't get into that in this theory though). That's the reason why MX cannot come back.

 

Now to answer the question "Why are the Xehanorts even in the Realm of Sleep". This has to do with Apprentice Xehanort. AX cannot/will not return because of the fact that MX and Terra basically "split" when AX fell to darkness. Nomura has hinted that Terra's heart is inside Riku. Because MX and Terra split, and Apprentice Xehanort was more or less a fusion between the two, it is impossible for him to return. And so all of the Xehanorts, besides AX/Terranort, are stuck within in the RoS because the original Xehanort is not able to return.

Good theory I mean this is very likely to be somewhat true.

This theory.....is the single most legit thing ive ever read on this site. It's a lot of assumption but unlike others you actually have sources for why you might think that this is the case. I support this.

correct me if I'm wrong but this theory sounds to me as if your saying: Sora only defeated MX heartless which is Ansem SOD but he has yet to defeat his nobody, if I guessed that one right, then could Xemnas possibly be Terra's Nobody?

Well if a Nobody is a Person's body and soul....id say Xemnas fits the bill for Terra..we know Master Xehanort's body vanished after his hearts transfer. This Young Xehanort could easily be the nobody if not something else.

Well from your theory i kinda got the idea that Ansem SoD was Terra's Heartless if the Guardian is MX Heartless (in other words, two separate heartless fighting together)...or viceversa since i kinda happen to think that the guardian looks bound in a way that reminds me of how terra is bound to MX will.

Ansem SoD is essentially Terra's Heartless, but Master Xehanort's heart had influence over his creation. Since Terra's and MX's heart almost became one during the entire AX situation, when AX's (Terra's) heart fell to darkness, MX's heart (The Guardian) was brought along.

When did Nomura hint at Riku harboring Terra's heart? And I like the theory but wouldn't that create two sets of heartless and Nobodies? So if YMX is in fact a nobody why is he in the RoS if he was never defeated? I think the theory makes sense but is kinda confusing.

I'm sorry but I have to disagree with this.

I really doubt the Guardian is meant to be any more than a manifestation of Darkness.

And that Terra's heart is inside Riku... No... I just don't see it. The fact that once something is destroyed it becomes a dream is more likely in my opinion. Apprentice Xehanort probably was the one to return, while previous forms of Xehanort, which don't exist in the RoL anymore are sleeping.

i personally think if it is this then its the other way around...if you think about it. If Xemnas is Terra's body and soul then if Ansem SoD was vanquished wouldnt he come back? No. They both arent back. The Guardian hasnt been vanquish (as far as we know)

I like the theory and all, but im going to have to disagree respectfully. Why you may ask, because Terranort and Apprentice Xehanort are the same person with not so different personalities just back stories, and as shown in one of the DDD trailers AX is in fact wielding MX keyblade which would not be possible if he wasn't MX. The reason he doesn't remember anything is because of the fact when aqua beat him he gained memory loss, thus not remembering his true self, and people seem to have forgotten that Yen Sid is preparing Sora and Riku to fight MX by fighting all his past versions of the guy, but I might be wrong
