Comic Book Artist, or Voice Actor? Grrr I can't decide! x_x

Posted

Okay so here is my little situation. Since I'm going to be in 12th grade now, I obviously have to think of what I want to study in college. I had already thought about being a comic book artist for quite a while now, and I know that the college for that is Kubert School. I thought it would be a perfect fit, since drawing is one of my main passions. But I also have been thinking about becoming a voice actor. My main inspiration for voice acting is Liam O'Brien. I mean seriously, the guy has a frickin epic voice! He's done the voice for:

  • Kain Highwind
  • Caius Ballad
  • Gaara of the Sand
  • Galenth Dysley, and others.

I would really like to be a voice actor, it would be an awesome experience for me. And since I love anime and cartoons and all that stuff, I think I'd be pretty good. Plus, I have a good acting voice in my opinion. I even do the voice of Smeagol from the Lord of the Rings, and I gotta say I sound pretty good. Well anyways, guys, please let me know what you think. I really don't know what to go for. I can do one, or the other, or both if I want to, but I'm still indecisive. What should I do? x_x

Both are only jobs that are successful if you're very VERY good at it, so I'd minor in them, but pick something more realistic to major in.

It'd be best to hear advice or get lessons from a professional on either subject if you're interested in doing them as a side-job.

I don't see why you can't do both. Like comic book artist as your main job and voice acting on the side. They're both rewarding since voice acting in animes can get you really popular with people who love anime. And with your comic books, you can get people to check out animes you're in which helps both you and what else you're working on. It's a win win in my mind. Go for both bro!!

Well I haven't heard your voice or seen your drawings, so it's hard for me to say. Liam O' Brien is definitely awesome, though! I would say go to college for acting and practice drawing on the side. It would be easier to become a comic book author without a degree, than it would to become an actor. Although, both are careers that you can break into without a degree.

Thanks man, and well, I should post a vid of me doing the voice of Smeagol so you can see how well I do his voice. And as for drawing, here is one of my drawings.

Not bad. I think it needs some work, before you could draw comics professionally, but it's still not bad.

Thanks man, this is why I want to go into the comic (mangaka) business, so I can improve on my art, and I could make art for game characters and anime characters. But being a voice actor can be so rewarding. I'd be able to do voice acting for anime characters, cartoon characters, and hopefully, one day, if Kingdom Hearts still exists, I'd hopefully be the voice actor for a new Kingdom Hearts character. That would be an epic honor. Aw damn it, see!? This is what I am so indecisive about!

It's nice to have dreams. They give us a reason to keep going. Just don't be discouraged if you ever see failure. It's going to happen, it happens to everyone. For as long as you think you have a shot, just keep shooting for it. Personally, I want to be a writer for movies and animated television shows. It's something that I enjoy and I believe that I am good at. I've tried submitting a story a couple times, but they didn't even give me the chance to send them the script. But, oh well. I'll keep trying and maybe one day, my dream will be a reality.

That is so true man. And yes, I know there will be failure. But as long as there's a will, there's a way, right? :)
I really think you should listen to Miku's advice. these are both really competitive fields, and the only way you can really make a living out of either of them alone is if you're incredibly talented and/or lucky. i think you should definitely consider them as side jobs, but try and see if there are any more careers you're interested in that would be easier to get into.

Yeah, that is true. And by the way I like your siggy, it looks epic. :)

I think you should go for being a comic book artist and try being a voice actor on the side. Although my opinion may be a little biased due to the fact I wanna be a comic book artist or a storyboarder. But don't let anyone tell you either one is unrealistic. If it's something you really want to do and you put in a lot of effort, you can be anything you want to be. :3Especially since your BRS drawing looks epic

well it depends on how far your nerves can take you with your art youd need more practices i dont know much on your voice but try to get a main stream job then do one of thos for a side job

Yeah, I know that both of these fields are tough to work on, but since I love drawing and I love doing voices, I'd figure I'd give it a try. But there is a downside to both jobs, so I have to be careful which one I choose as my main job. I mean, what if I work so hard studying for comic book art, and then it turns out I'm not needed, or I might not find a job in that area? The same thing would apply with voice acting. There are pros and cons to every kind of job, but as long as I'm dedicated and determined, I'm sure I can work it out. Thanks for the advice guys, it's good to see other people's point of view. So stay tuned, in the future I may be a comic book artist...or a voice actor! Or maybe both! Only time will tell.

As other people have suggested, you may want to try those as a side thing until they take off. I would honestly say, imo, you've got a better chance of becoming a comic book artist.

You could do both but that would require more time involved in studying, and classes o.o

Part time for both. I'd rather you be an artist though.
