I can already feel the MILLIONS ("and millions!") of DragonBall fans raising their eyebrows at the mere title of this little ditty...so, I'm going to make my case quick so the aftershock will be less painful....(sigh)

 

So what if DragonBall stopped at the point it was supposed to, i.e. DBZ Saiyan Saga?

Okay, let me explain this in the most simplest way possible, before we get DragonBall Kai up in here....

 

DragonBall Z was NOT meant to be! Alright?! DragonBall was originally intended, by Tori-frickin'-yama himself, to end with the OG DragonBall, and have the "Z" as a little epilogue to close things out. Hell, I even think the ending was supposed have Gohan kill Vegeta or somethin'! (If anyone knows if this is true, let us know)

 

Look, DBZ was cool. It was. And you know thisssss, man! I've said it a bunch of times over! ... BUT....(sigh) let's be honest, after Frieza....yeah, the whole substance sorta went away....Cell and Buu weren't that important as far as actual meaning....aside from Goku dying again and Vegeta finally starting to act like a reasonable motherf**ker....the arcs could have been renamed or reconcepted any other way, and it wouldn't make a difference. You get what I'm saiyan?

 

Also, we also know the reason why Toriyama even went through with it was because he had his bosses AND the fans craving for more...and every time he had the chance to wipe his brow and take a break....NO! They wanted more. So he gave us Frieza. Still wanted more. Then he mustered up Cell. And then it was "okay, we promise you, one last arc...and you can move on. Promise." ... But-but we coudn't even be happy with that...with Goku dead, Tori made Goten to give us the new hero to the story...which we rejected. So he brought Goku back...THEN he wanted Gohan to defeat Buu, and be the real hero at the end...but NO....we wanted Goku to hog the spotlight again....so that's it. Goku kills Buu. Goku fights Uub. END. FInale. Done.

 

Oh, but did we stop there? HFIL NO! We wanted a 3rd series. So, Toriyama just said. "F**k it. I'm tired. I want a break. TOEI, here's some character designs...YOU handle the rest. I'm takin' a vacation." And so DragonBall GT was born....-__-...way to go, fan-base.

 

Now, before you jump to conclusions, NO, I am not ragging on the fan-base I am apart of...I'm just Saiyan, that's how it went down. And I know I can't change it, either...I mean, I'm not Mirai Trunks, I can't just pop into a time machine my mom made me and speed off.....no, I've actually come to accept it. As a lot of people have. I mean, come on, the series is 20 years old. At some point, you just gotta accept it. Just Saiyan.

 

So, sorry for the rant, but this is my basic opinion: "Z" wasn't meant to be written; Toriyama was pressured into the whole thing...and if it weren't for that pressure...well the positive would be DragonBall would have ended the way it was supposed to, and Toriyama coulda moved on to another great idea....and the negative, of course, would be DragonBall wouldn't have spawned into the most popular anime/manga series of all time. I mean, toys, games, posters, collectibles....this blew up pretty big, huh?

 

Well, I'm done sounding off, so now it's your turn. What are your thoughts? Do you think DragonBall ending the way it should have would have been the right thing to do, or was our constant fan begging to make Z and GT worthwhile? (Obviously, it was, but, uh, you know, morally speaking....you know, the pressure on Toriyama, and all that.)

Actually I'm pretty sure Toriyama had absolutely nothing to do with GT whatsoever as he doesn't even consider it canon. And as far as the Manga is concerned, Dragon Ball and DBZ are one and the same. The differentiation was only made in the titles of the animes themselves.

There are quite a few reasons I can think of like: the constant gasping, incredibly long power up phases, overblown abilities, the multiple episode long battles (I'm estimating Frieza's at about 25 episodes...), etc.

The Z was just a differential for americans. IT happens the same way in Japan, just minus the Z.

And yes I know they're the same. In fact, just so you know, I barely use the term "DragonBall Z" now adays, I prefer to just say "DragonBall" because that's its real name....to me, like you said, "DBZ" is just a name to separate the two shows, like how Shippuden is for Naruto.

 

To be honest, I don't get why a series has to split into two different shows sometimes when there's a big time gap...I mean, yeah, it happens in other forms of media...but, uh, you don't see "DragonBall Z" or "Naruto: Shippuden" as a manga, do ya? Nope. Just a continuation of DB and Naruto. Just Saiyan. They're both in the same bunch.....maybe it has something to do with marketing....idk.

Yeah, I know. Even the fanbase knows....however, we stick with the flaws and accept them....after all, most of us watched the show when we were little kids, so it was kind of easier to take in. lol. And we're cool with it. Though, to be honest, it's hard for me, unlike some other fans, to go back to the show again....that's why I stick to Kai.

Im happy the series got a second part like Naruto. Im just not happy about how the final arc was made. Everything in Z up to Buu was incredible, but you can tell by the Buu Saga, Toriyama almost completely had run out of ideas. The last arc was good, but it wasn't as exciting as the other arcs before that. Not to mention, they completely retconned how much stronger Gohan was then Goku, and put Goku back in the spotlight. I was not happy with that. -__- Way to screw us Gohan fans over, Goku fans.

 

I still liked the Buu saga, i just didn't like it as much as the rest of Z up to that part. But still, im glad that Z got made. It was better then the original first part. I would've been ok with the series ending at the Cell Saga, but if Toriyama hadn't made the Buu saga, we wouldn't have gotten Battle of GOds, so that's a good thing.
