In Dream Drop Distamce we discover that the cloaked man is actually Xehanort although Young Xehanort explains that he reduced himself to a heart so he could travel through time to make things happen. (For example, telling Sora about the Destiny Islands being connected and that he traveled back years before to tell something to the Young Xehanort). But what confuses me is that he is almost making some sort of strange Time loop, when exactly did he reduce himself to a heart to convince his younger self to either be evil or learn about the other worlds and what not and..I am totally confused please can someone help me with this the logic is making my brain die >_<.

Young Xehanort was able travel through time thanks to his future heartless. When Apprentice Xehanort split himself in half his heartless gained the ability to travel through time. As a fail safe Ansem went back in time to to visit Xehanort before he left Destiny Islands. By coming in contact with his past self Ansem gave Young Xehanort his ability to manipulate, and transcend time. Because the past most Xehanort now had the ability to transcend time this put all the Norts in a state in which they could transcend time as well. This allowed Young Xehanort to move forward and collect the alternate versions of himself to bring to present time.

When Xehanort reduced himself to a heart, he became Ansem SoD. You can see it in the first KH game, when he takes over Riku's body.
