He had much better dialog, he didn't get excited about everything, he wasn't half as naive, His emotions were more realistic(in kingdom hearts 2 when he was crying in front of riku is wasn't convincing in the slightest) overall i just think he's a much better character than he was in ddd and kh2 

I think I figured out a valid reason for Sora's personality to change a bit in KHII, and it is all DIZ's fault! When he messed with Roxas's memories and altered his personality to make it so he would be forced to help Sora, he didn't realize that when they would merge back together some of his programming affect interfere with Sora! Or possibly it was by having Roxas try to relive a Sora like life that caused Sora's memories to be assembled a bit differently and thus slightly altering his personality. So, in other words even if some could blame Namine, I am going to blame DIZ.

Though I am just saying something fishy could have happened while using Roxas like that.

People likes to have angsty heroes that gets redemption  when it's too late....it's like People want Riku to be the Sasuke Uchiha of the KH franchise (won't spoil...read the manga)

Wasn't it you who complained about the "light and darky dark dark obsessed characters" in BBS? Well, never been a fan of Naruto; I always thought Riku's character was pretty cool. David Gallagher is one of the best voice actors because he shows that he truly cares about the series. It shows in his character's voice. I think the direction they were going for with Riku was relatability. Are you a fan of Zuko, from Avatar The Last Airbender? I guess kinda like that.

KH2s Sora for me is better than any other Sora.  In KH1 he was limited, in KH2 he grew up and was capable of common sense, in the games following he turned into a retard to make others look smart because it's easier to show someone's supreme wisdom when they're with someone stupid.
