(Not just numbered titles, spin offs and sequels/prequels count too.)

I think XIII-2 has the darkest ending for an FF game in the whole series.

I mean, the main protagonist(Serah) dies from another vision of the future. Then time is destroyed and everything in the world is being warped and infected by the Chaos. Snow is still trapped in the coliseum, Fang and Vanille are still trapped in crystal statis, Lightning is trapped in crystal for 500 years, Noel and Hope are at ground zero of the time crash and Noel is infected by the chaos, and Sazh is who knows where. Its a real bleak ending.

At least it's followed up by another sequel that will probably fix the world in a way, but still.

FFVI, definitely.

The whole WORLD is destroyed, and thousands, if not MILLIONS of people are killed.

I seriously need to get into the FF series.

I've played to many Final Fantasys to remember which ending were what. I don't how to answer this question.

Of the ones I've played?  None of them had bleak endings.  Sure, there were casualties along the way (like the VI example) but they all ended on a positive note.  Things can be rebuilt and the worlds as a whole aren't hosed.  Isn't FF in general all about that hope?

But I guess if I had to pick, FF1, relatively speaking.  I haven't played it but the heroes don't even remember the good they've done (something about time travel).  Not being able to remember your achievements is pretty depressing, but even then, the world is saved so things still end positively for the most part.

yeah, and the fact that we can say spin off kinda makes me wanna say one of the tactics

I think Crisis Core had a pretty sad ending. Not tear worthy like some others thought/did cry but sad nonetheless. VI also gets my vote but it wasn't really that bleak.

True. It is generally about hope. Even in XIII-2's ending, there's a sequel to that game, in which they'll probably save the world again.

Wait, What! I'm in kefkas tower and I was assuming a very happy ending. Are you just talking about the world of ruin half of the game?

I actually teared up at the end of that game. It was the only game that made me do that, even though i knew that zack would die because i played VII first. My choice would probably be crisis core

Well...uh...in Final Fantasy VII, Sephiroth's black materia causes a meteor to crash through all of the planets in the solar system...sounds pretty bleak to me.

Yeah, I was talking about that half of the game. I mean, the very ending isn't too bleak, but when you think about the characters having to live in the kind of world that Kefka created, it's really dark.

I need to know more about FF to answer that question.
