Simple and Clean Intro song japanese-english translation

Posted

Something's been bugging me for awhile...

In the intro, when Vanitas shows up, Utada sings in the song 'yami' which means darkness, but in the english version, Simple and Clean, it says nothing about darkness.

Also, when Ven is holding a strange blue orb, and when Aqua watches Terra walk away, the song says 'hikari', which means light. Again, the english version says nothing about light.

I think Simple and Clean is not the actual translation of the song in japanese. Am I right? Am I wrong? Or am I just thinking too much?

well, you may be right.

But when the people are translating the songs, they don't give the literal translation; so some words are due to be left out.

they probably got the translation wrong. its not 100 percent right

Because it isn't. It barely fits the series at all, and it's really just talking about SoKai if you analyze enough. Really inappropriate for BBS, but hey, what can you do?

Wasn't Simple and Clean written way before this game was even announced? Even before KH got started? It's completely unrelated to the series, if what I read is true. Sanctuary, now, was written for KH.

Of course. It was used for the first game in the series. I found a lot of SoKai hints in it, so it worked for both KH1 and CoM, though I'm probably overanalyzing the lyrics.

Simple and Clean was written after Hikari though, so I'm assuming it was originally intended for KH, just that Hikari is written a bit more...abstract.

Well then, I'm not dissing you or anything, but you might actually be overanalyzing. It's just like Sanctuary reversed, people can interpert a song differently and pull things out they want to hear. It might be SoKai, it might not. All I know is that the song itself wasn't made for BBS, just like Sanctuary wasn't made for Days. Although there may be some relation. BBS is what happened before KH1, and they share a song. Days is what happened before KH2, and they have the same song as well. Makes you think how they picked S&C for CoM.

Of course it's not going to be a literal translation of Hikari, but in it's own way, it does fit to the opening clip. Like when Vanitas holds his hand out to Ven, she says "you're all I need." which could relate how Vanitas needs Ven to be complete. And right after you see Ven look a little shocked at the part where she sings "oh no". That could foreshadow the fight and struggle ahead between them. And when it goes to a shot of Aqua looking solemn *or whatever emotion it's called* as Terra's walking away when Hikki sings "Simple and clean is the way that you're making me feel tonight". And finally, when it gets to "hold me, whatever lies beyond this morning..." it shows Aqua holding Ven. If anything, the English version made more sense to me for that opening clip than the Japanese one; even if it didn't directly mention darkness or light.

they probably changed it to repesent the charecters?

Oh, and I almost forgot, the scene right after she sings, "I don't think, life is quite that simple" you see Ven and Terra fight MX and Ven get caught. And *not to make it sound yaoi implied* but when she goes "please, oh baby, don't go" you see Terra look up at Ven worried about him as he struggles to get away from MX. And finally -catches breath- after the second time she sings "Whatever lies beyond this morning, is a little later on, regardless of warnings, the future doesn't scare at all. Nothing's like before." It shows MX using idk what to show Kingdom Hearts and Aqua looking worried, and then cuts to Terra showing his yellow eyes which fits in with "nothing's like before". Ok, I'm done. x'D

-thinks- gotta admit, that kind of makes sense, and now that you mentioned it, it matches the Intro in some ways. But I still wonder what the song really says in Japanese.

Thanks for pointing it out! =D

The Japanese version of some songs say things totally different then in the English version. But I don't think that is how it is with Simple and Clean.

The lyric is different to match the music

What JTD95 said

Utada said that she tried to get the melodies and music to fit for both, but that she couldn't get the same message across in the English version "Simple and Clean" so she made it differently to fit. Therefore the 2 songs do in fact have different meanings. And the song wasn't made way before Kingdom Hearts. The single of "Hikari" was released in March 2002, in the same month that Kingdom Hearts was released in Japan
