I'm not usually one to make threads / fanclubs but I think this needs one!

This is club for fans of the brilliant J.R.R Tolkien to talk about the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings.

I couldn't think of a better title for this. Also, I did forum search to see if this was already made.

Anyways, who else is looking forward to this -

I can't believe Legolas is going to be in it!

Fool. My love for the Hobbit is a little on the short side.

YYYYYYYYYYYeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!

Nasty little Hobbitses....

Speaking of Legolas...

I can't wait for the Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug to come out!!

I'll join since I remember liking The Hobbit's book as a child xD

The enthusiasm in this thread is intoxicating.

Which is to say that everyone seems to be asleep.

SO.  DISCUSSION TIME.

Favorite aspects thus far?

Anything you hope they keep from the book?

Anything you hope they don't keep from the book?

Any thoughts at all?

I personally think it's amusing that all of the characters that get maybe one mention in some

obscure sentence suddenly have roles as big as (or bigger) than the main character.

(Azog and Radagast cough cough) (and isn't Tauriel supposed to be a man? justlikearwen)

Also, though The Hobbit is one of my favorite books, I'm kinda glad that they switched stuff

in the storyline up.  If the movie was exactly like the book, why would I care to go watch it at

all?  There wouldn't be any surprises to look forward to, and thus you wouldn't need to really

invest yourself in the story.

Was anyone else caught totally off guard at the beginning when Bilbo is quoting the opening

lines to the book word for word until the last line?

AND DID YOU ALL NOTICE THAT STING DIDN'T HAVE ANY OF THE ELVISH SCRIPT ON IT?

I didn't notice that until I watched it the second time.  I got very very excited about that. I

wonder when Bilbo will get it fancified up?  Sometime after the battle of five armies...?

Parts that  I'm really hoping for / looking forward to:

-THE SPIDERS (Attercop!  PLEASE let Bilbo call them attercops)

-Gandalf saying "If you don't like my Burglar, please don't damage him."

-The look on my friends face (hasn't read the book) when Fili and Kili die

-Lobelia walking off with Bilbo's spoons

It's not good to lie, Zola.

Anyway, I like how they made Azog quite a significant protagonist, even though he's mentioned only once (IIRC) in the entire book.

Yes. The Hobbit didn't really have a single antagonist until they reached Smaug, so I think Azog was as good a candidate as any. Though his son got a longer sentence in the book than Azog himself did. Do you think they'll mention his son at all in the movie? It's looking like they're going to let Azog have his role in that final battle. More build up plot-wise that way.

Hmm... I don't know. Like I said, I should probably reread the book. I don't remember his son ._.

Sorry. My Tolkien is showing. .-.The last time I read it was in Spanish. It was very interesting. It's amazing what you notice when reading something in a different language.

No big deal, you were just really excited about the Hobbit. So much enthusiasm on this thread! xD

Well at least they go down protecting their uncle - that's a very noble way to die.

I should probably get back to reading the book.

I should really just stop assuming that everyone has read the book.

Because its never true.

In other news,

Thranduil.
