Pokémon X and Y has came out worldwide on October 12th, 2013 and has been told the most innovated game duo in the series. While Pokémon X and Y is a very welcomed addition to the franchise, a couple of flaws hold the game back from being the best of the series. From Fairy types to Mega Evolutions, this entire game is worthy of one title: A true Evolution.
Gameplay:
Pokémon X and Y introduced many elements in gameplay. They first introduced for the first time in the core games, 3D models for the entire game. The 3D models really look very fleshed out and it stands well beyond anything I have ever seen on any game on the 3D. GameFreak really went beyond their and the 3DS's potential. Though the 3D slider was usable in the overworld, it was still flattering to see such a huge improvement in the game. Pokémon X and Y also introduced a brand new type that was hoped to rebalance the meta game, called the Fairy type. Multiple Pokémon both old and new were labeled the Fairy types. Though they seem like a great idea, I see a very few of them people really good. Most of the old Pokémon such as Azumarril and Gardevoir has benefited a lot from this type and they are now stronger than ever but they and a few other Pokémon are the only decent ones. I also didn't like how most of them sadly lacked enough move and stat versatility. Most of them are slow, and the new Fairy moves are either Support or Special. Only one move is Physical and it does barely enough damage. Still Fairy types are a wonderful type that will get better as the generations go by, after all it is a newly introduced type. Mega Evolutions was another feature introduced as well, it took old Pokémon that couldn't evolve anymore either due to reaching their final stage or simply because GameFreak said so. They make the Pokémon on par with the legendaries of the franchise, which really means they would be placed in Ubers depending on their usability. This will really give a new outlook on the Ubers tier since now there are given more choices to what Pokémon to choose. Pokémon Amie was another cute feature added to let you take care of the Pokémon and they get boosts in either experience, critical hit ratios and much more. It was a bit overpowered but it was still a welcomed feature. Rollerskating is another new feature and I believe it should've been worked on more. I found Rollerskating absolutely uncontrollable at times, though it was a fun feature it still made me bump into too many people and buildings. Super Training is an EV training program that made it much easier to make your Pokémon more specialized in a certain stat. There are much more features such as Boutiques, Cafés, Player Search System, Friend Safari and much more that were extremely well done. One problem I had with Boutiques and Hair Dressers in Kalos is how much many clothes and hairstyles it was lacking if you play as a Male compared to a Female. Last but not least, the Pokémon. The Pokémon I truly enjoyed in the game, I love how most of them look. A few disappointed me though, Aromatisse, Slurpuff and Heliolisk to name a few. Aromatisse looks like something that came out of a child's nightmare, Slurpuff looks like it drank too much whiskey, and Heliolisk looks like wasted potential. There are only 69 new Pokémon which made me even more disappointed, since that meant that over 50% of the Pokémon were already revealed beforehand. The game is terribly easy with the EXP share, even if you can turn it off, I didn't expect it to be this broken. It's still had wonderful Gameplay, I give it a:
8.5/10
+ Good 3D visuals
+ Amazing Features
+ Great looking Pokémon
- Way too easy
- Barely enough new Pokémon
Story:
What I found Pokémon X and Y was lacking was a good villainous team and a non-obvious main villain. Team Flare crashed my hopes and dreams of being a Stylish Sadistic badass team into becomes a Stylish team of stupidity. They literally acted like teenagers the moment I met them, they made the game too obvious and made me feel like it was a downgrade. Pokémon isn't really known for its story, but ever since Generation V I thought that this franchise had a good chance of having a really good story. This doesn't mean that Generation VI's story was terrible, as the story unfolds you realize there is more to this game in the story. It wasn't that great, but it wasn't terrible. It was decent in a way that a person can listen to these un-relatable team. Moving on to the Rivals, they were really well done. Shauna and Serena/Calem hold a special place in my heart because of this game, they were possibly the most well-thought out characters in this game along with another special character. Tierno and Trevor however, were not fleshed out. Their characters belong to a certain chic and they never went out of that chic. The ending was really well done as well, it made the game feel came together as a whole even though it technically didn't. I give it a:
7.5/10
+ 2 Good Rivals
+ Good Ending
- 2 Bland Rivals
- Obvious plot points
- Team Flare
Music:
As always Pokémon has introduced even more brilliant pieces of music. Finally transitioning to orchestral music, Pokémon X and Y has to be one of the best, if not, the best game with the best musical pieces in the franchise to date. My most favourite had to be the Elite 4's theme. It was terribly well done, it is catchy, it is something you can battle to, and it is a very fun theme. Other themes that X and Y has done well are the Champion's Theme, Legendary Theme, Rival's Battle Theme, Gym Leader's Battle theme, Power Plant/Pokémon Factory theme, Team Flare's Battle theme, Calem/Serena theme and of course the Bike theme. But, all of the routes sound almost the same, they don't have a major difference. I give this a:
9.5/10
+ Terrific Music
+ Sound Quality is wonderful
- All the Route themes sound almost the same
All in all, this game is a great game to play. It has an amazing gameplay, a decent story and top-notch music to get you going. I give Pokémon X and Y a:
8.5/10
+ Decent Story
+ Amazing Music
+ Great Gameplay
+ Replayable
- Very Easy
- Obvious Plot Points
