Felix the Cat: Ninety-four years

Posted

Posted Image

It will be ninety-four years since his first animated short was released on the ninth of November.

It is sad to think that soon enough he will be one of the first North American animated characters to turn one hundred years old, but no one would care.

Fool. Funny, my girlfriend has a cat named Felix, and it's not a reference to this.

I'm a huge 1920's-30's cartoon buff. I've been getting into the Felix cartoons recently, actually. I think he might be the first, but I'm not 100% on that. I think Koko the Clown may beat him out on that. But at any rate, I adore how blatant some of these cartoons are given that they're pre-Code.

In one short, Felix is tasked with rescuing a woman from a man in Egypt who kidnapped her. He gets her all the way to his magic carpet, but can't lift her onto the thing given that she's pretty fat. Eventually he just says 'Screw it.' and ditches her. Then he literally tells her husband who asked him to rescue her, "What she needs is a ten ton truck." He passes out after hearing this, probably from sheer horror.

Our hero.
