Language acquisition through KH and forums

Posted

Hi, I'm studying language acquisition in college and I wanted to probe the question as to whether you guys feel like you have acquired or learned aspects of the Japanese language through interaction with Kingdom Hearts and interacting with other fans of the series on forums? Perhaps you've picked up some Japanese terms by discussing videos before they're translated or have wanted to find more aspects to the Japanese culture. Please let me know. This is exciting and new stuff and I'd love to illuminate the educational purposes online forums can create.

I've learnt a lot of new English lingo. Not sure if they're all internet created, or perhaps used more so in the US. Words like 'kawaii,' 'ship,' 'firetruck,' among others. I wouldn't be caught dead using these words in real life though. Way too internet-y. Not really my style.

None whatsoever.

はい、私がキングダムハーツ は日本語とだいすきです。^^'

What i tried and failed at typing in japanese:

Yes, I love kingdom hearts and japanese. So, i would like to try talking to others in the forum in japanese/playing the games in japanese. (This part is non-existant because i can't figure out how to write that in 日本語 xD)

I've learned a little Japanese from playing the JP and FM versions of the games, but not anything from this forum.

It doesn't have to be anything specifically from this forum. But I've found research in which a Chinese student was able to perfect her English by writing fan fiction stories from her favorite pop culture and video games. I wanted to see if anyone has found that here perhaps through socializing with one another and maybe through the Role Playing section on this forum.

I've learned a couple of japanese words by watching the japanese KH cutscenes, mostly from the new Days cutscenes. There's not very many of them but maybe if I had studied japanese longer, watching the cutscenes would have been more useful in learning the language.

But in case you're not only interested in how people have learned japanese, I can say that I've learned a lot of English by playing the games and especially by reading posts here and writing myself. And by doing other KH related stuff on the internet. And I'm not a native English speaker so that's kind of the same thing isn't it?

No, sure with Kingdom Hearts Chi, I've started to recognize the "symbols" so I know what world a mission is set in like, but I couldn't start a conversation with someone.

The few phrases I actually know and can say were learnt from anime.

I learned a lot of english here. Somehow, I learned the american slang instead the uk what my school teach. Just because the forum, and videogames.

This is great stuff guys. I think there's a lot possibilities for people to learn new language by merely interacting with certain passions they have (such as video games) and then discussing the passions with other people. It's another way to look at education and video games, not merely as playing games that teach language but learning new linguistic tools as a byproduct of another medium (video games, online forums).
