Some new FF articles and interviews that some of you might be interested in. The one about FF15 is stuff we already knew about, but the interview with the directors of Lightning Returns is interesting as it discusses the future of FF games. It seems like the turn-based style of gameplay is over for consoles and that genre will be restricted to handhelds and mobile devices.

It gives the player time to build a strategy and make a plan instead of jamming the XSquareB button

I wouldn't mind a turn based game for next gen consoles. It seems unlikely that FF will ever turn back to the style of game seen prior to FFXI, but a new IP similar to Bravely Default for next-gen would be appreciated. FF has always pushed the hardware of consoles and is more about the story and feeling of the characters/setting than a gameplay mechanic. That much the article got true. I miss turn based FF games too, but it won't happen in the foreseeable future.

Hey, don't blame IGN. They're just restating what the developers told them. IGN are generally fairly balanced when it comes to video games journalism.

And by fairly balanced, you mean giving every Call of Duty game a 9 and be bias about certian games and give it a low score for reasons that are not in the actual game.....they're not balanced as some other guys like Angry Joe who's thousand times better than them.

Also, regarding the article,it was IGN that was suggested to them through the question to leave the turn based system

Games which IGN have given a perfect score to:The Last of UsSuper Mario Galaxy 2GTAVTLOZ: Skyward SwordMGS4Pokemon Gold and SilverThis is a fairly balanced list of scores, slightly biased towards Sony and Nintendo, though. In response to your COD remark, they have given BO a 8.5, Declassified a 4.0, World at War a 4.5, and the rest about 9 like you said.Whereas for KH games they have given: an 8.0 for Re:Coded, Days, COM, and 8.5 for BBS, HD 1.5 remix, and DDD, 7.6 for KH2. The only one of those reviews I disagree with is for KH2 being too low, and Re:Coded having too high a score. KH games aren't for everyone and don't deserve perfect scores as they usually have a flaw which detracts from the experience. IGN is a mainstream reviewer and as such have scores are guides for mainstream audiences: a 9-10 is an amazing game which has widespread appeal, a 8-9 is a good, but flawed, game with a niche appeal. Most KH games deserve to be in the 8-9 region.

Ha you should go look at their review for Sonic Lost World and check out their reason for giving it a low score lol.

Yeah, occasionally they mess up. Being a mainstream reviewer inherently means that some games will have lowered scores, but Lost World does have a Metacritic score of 63 compared with IGN's score of 5.8, so the majority of critics think it is flawed. Same with Wonderful 101, IGN gives it a 7.4 and the Metacritic score is 78. Having slightly lower than average reviews does not mean that they are as biased as people say. IGN's rating system is also different from other critics, with a 7-8 still being "good".

Um, I wouldn't buy that much into that comment. They never once said that it would be "restricted to handhelds and mobile devices", they only said that they might use them in that context if they don't have to worry about making a more "higher end" experience. They aren't getting rid of the turn-based system for good, they're just diversifying the series' gameplay. Than means instead of traditional-based systems, we will probably get a more "modernized" version, like how FFXIII worked, only different. Don't go making huge sweeping statements that are going to freak people out until you fully understand the context of what they are saying.

Again, they never said that they are "abandoning" the RPG turn-based style, they are just going to start dabbling in other things now. It will be brought back depending on what they feel the mood and theme of the game should be. They are trying to diversify the franchise rather than keeping it nailed down to only one thing that works. Also, not once in that entire interview or any other interview have they ever said that they are going to move the franchise to the mobile systems only, they are only suggesting that they will make SOME games for iOS and mobile systems.

Some fans like button mashing, some like actual strategy and brain work, I personally like both and am looking forward to games and moments where both are included and combined evenly.

Um....like how Fox News is "fairly balanced"? I think you're giving IGN WAAAAAAAAAY too much credit.

Yeah, they DO tend to do that...

Games which IGN have given a perfect score to:

The Last of Us

Super Mario Galaxy 2

GTAV

TLOZ: Skyward Sword

MGS4

Pokemon Gold and Silver

This is a fairly balanced list of scores, slightly biased towards Sony and Nintendo, though.

Those are exceptions. Those tend to be the big games that EVERYONE can agree on, but also they have different people giving different evaluations of different games, and most of them tend to be pretty mix-matched in terms of which genre of game they are assigned to reviewing. Like how they tend to have a COD fan review games like Sonic and Kingdom Hearts. Speaking of which...

Ha you should go look at their review for Sonic Lost World and check out their reason for giving it a low score lol.

Yes, that was INCREDIBLY stupid.

Um, no. IGN messes up WAY more than that. Lost World isn't getting "just" negative scores, every other reviewing system out there can't seem to agree on this one game. Lost World is pretty much becoming the most polarizing Sonic game in the franchise's 22 years. And to say that there aren't any biased reviewers on IGN is giving them way too much credit. At least with solo reviewers (like Angry Joe, as Metal Snake brought up), you know who's talking and what they're general opinions are already. It honestly feels like there's too many people on IGN reviewing these games, or at the very least they aren't being matched up that well. The least they could do is have a second opinion by another reviewer who represents a different majority/minority (have the general/casual gamer review, then have the long-time fan's second opinion). So many other resources and websites do so, why doesn't IGN?

I looked between the lines, and to me it seems that for the PS4/Xbox One Square Enix are set on making FF a real-time combat game, or at best like FF13. They could return to a turn based style of gameplay, but it would probably be for a console like the Wii U (a console where graphics aren't as important). I guess I was a little sweeping in my use of the term "console," I should of used Xbox One and PS4 instead. Hanging around IGN too much has probably changed my mindset so that I create flame wars whenever possible.

True, the reviews for Lost World have been polarising. IGN does have user reviews to cover the alternative opinions. You can't expect every critic to write a review for every game: they try their best to give the right game to the right reviewer, but sometimes fail (ike reviewers who complain about controls, when lots of other people have no problems whatsoever). If you want a range of opinions go onto Metacritic or onto the IGN forums: users and critics alike both write in depth reviews about their experiences. Of course some people are biased, but as a whole the company is not and I've seen negative and positive reviews for all video game systems' games. I haven't played Lost World but trying to give objective reviews for subjective experiences is impossible: I like IGN because I get to hear from a range of people about games, either in reviews or in comment sections. I used to go onto Gameinformer, but their User reviews began to be dominated by ads...

What site gives better, well rounded reviews than IGN? I'm curious... I like to choose my poison and, to me, IGN seems to be an alright portal into seeing a variety of people's opinions...

Well, whatever, you have your preferences and that's no business of mine to change. I still don't prefer IGN that much, if for nothing more than the reason that they gave a lot of poor reviews for games that I actually enjoy. It's a rather cheap excuse not to like something, but that's just how I feel. I usually only look to them BEFORE something comes out, when it's all hype and stuff like that. But as soon as versions of it exist out there, I'm just going to hold out for my own subjective experience. THEN I can start looking at things objectively, including the game, my opinions, and everyone else's. I don't like being suggested by someone else that I shouldn't waste my time with a game just because they said so.

Ahh, okay. I can understand someone not liking reading others opinions and, if you genuinely needed help in choosing a game to buy, going to a author with similar opinions in games would be preferential. I generally know what sort of game I like and IGN assigning a random number to a game wont change my mind: such as Arkham Orgins getting a 7. I'm still gonna get that game despite a so-called "bad" review because, under IGN's rating system, that is still a good game for fans of the genre/series, just not recommended to newcomers due to much better games in the series. There are no major flaws in the game such as crippling glitches so I will likely enjoy it.

Thanks for understanding. But about the whole turn-based system going into only the Wii U thing, that's not necessarily true. It has just as much chase of happening on the Xbox One and PS4. This is basically a game of sit and wait...or play and wait. Whatever. Point is, there is a lot more to the Final Fantasy series than just its combat style, like how there is more to Sonic the Hedgehog than just being in 2D.
