Naughty Dog Co-Founder: Nintendo ‘Irrelevant as a Hardware Manufacturer’

Posted

Jason Rubin is best-known for being one half of the two man team that founded Sony-owned developer Naughty Dog. But today, he’s making waves by something that he said on GameTrailers’ show Bonus Round (via GameSpot).

When asked by host Geoff Keighley if Sony or Microsoft will win the new battle between PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, the topic of Nintendo came up. “[sony and Microsoft] will do, for the next few years, extremely well, again because Nintendo has stumbled,” Rubin said. “Nintendo is irrelevant as a hardware manufacturer in the console business right now.”

After some crosstalk, Rubin notes that Nintendo is “selling more Wiis than Wii Us,” but does have this to say: “And again, before the hate mail comes in, I will say to whichever camera is on right now, a worldwide treasure, Nintendo [is]. There is no developer… that will ever be [Nintendo visionary Shigeru] Miyamoto. It is a crime that we do not play those games on the systems that we have.”

These quotes are interesting, considering Nintendo continues to put out high quality software on Wii U, most recently in the form of Super Mario 3D World, which is superb. However, Wii U is undeniably struggling to get a foothold, lagging far behind Nintendo’s historically soft GameCube sales in its first year on the market. PlayStation 4 managed to outsell Wii U’s life-to-date sales in the UK in only 48 hours. Then again, 3DS’ dominance is unrivaled, outselling PS Vita many times over.

Rubin left Naughty Dog nearly a decade ago and was most recently known for being THQ’s last president before the company went bankrupt. But he made his name at Naughty Dog – which he co-founded with Andy Gavin in 1984 when they were 14 years old (as JAM Software) – which has since gone on to create Crash Bandicoot, Jak & Daxter, Uncharted, and The Last of Us. You can read more about the history of Naughty Dog here.

I say do what Sega did and hop out of the console race and develop games for Playstation. Let's face it if seems their "Next Gen" hardware is equivalent of Last Gen. And it's been like that since the DS and PSP started going against each other. People don't buy Wii's for it's innovation in technology, they buy them for the Nintendo exclusive titles.

Nintendo should just stick to handhelds instead of gimmicky consoles. AKA I Agree with him.

Who buys a console for innovative technology?  I buy my consoles for games, and unfortunately PS4 and Xbox One have nothing interesting/good that I can't get on PS3 right now.  My Wii U's awesome, has some of the best games I've played in years, including NintendLand, Super Mario 3D World, and even the far superior version of The Wind Waker. The look absolutely stunning, and the gameplay is smooth, fun, and easy to controller. The outlook is bad however, not because Nintendo is "irrelevant," but because they fail to market their console correctly. It looks stupid and uninteresting, but once you have it in your hands, it's comfortable, feels real good to use (it's a console you have to hold in your hands and experience to know what truly matters in it). The community tabs are so much better and Miiverse is a fun way to share things.  I actually love the gimmicks on the Wii U, whereas, I dun really care about the Xbox One at all and I only want a PS4 for KH3 and FFXV. When will I ever feel the need to use a share button?

Did I mention, this response was written on the Wii U gamepad, using the Internet Browser?

You act like its so inpressive to post something online from a console.. I could do the same thing 7 years ago when the original Wii launched. SHOCKER! This is firetrucking 2013, nintendo is FAR behind when it comes to technology and innovation. Sure your right about the games, the Wii U games are awesome! The ones that Nintendo made... Otherwise what good is it other than to play Nintendo games? No one goes and says "Hmmm.. I love the Battlefield and Call of Duty (not saying CoD innovates but its just and example) franchises! Im buying a Wii U!" No one thinks like that, now someone who likes Mario, would be forced to buy a Wii U. My point is that no one buys a Wii U to have a great First and Third party expirence... They buy it for the small handfull of games that are exclusive to their First party, and play all the other Third Party and other exclusives on their respected consoles. We just play Wii U for Nintendo's 3 or 4 exclusive titles a year, that carrying nothing new to the series and use the same existing characters that theyve been using since 1981.. Its time to get your hadware properly up to date, and your games including something new and fresh and not a new Cat Suit, or Gravity for your next Mario games. P.S (The PS4 and Xbox One just launched litterally a few weeks ago, and their lineup for the next two years is looking awesome, meanwhile the Wii U has been out for over a year with nothing to ride home about and next years lineup should have been what we expected within its Launch Year (Smash Bros and such) and still lacking games which are causing poor sales

Honestly, I'm really starting to hate Naughty Dog right now. I grew up with their series' and I love literally every game they've put out since Crash Bandicoot, but the way they've handled some of their stuff recently just kind of bothers me. Naughty Dog has no place calling out Nintendo. What are you doing, ND?

Go make Jak and Daxter 4 already.

A better perspective would be THQ calling Nintendo out. It's much more proper to go by anyway. Rubin may be well-known for his time at ND, but, in recent years, he was the head of THQ, which went bankrupt under his leadership, so he has no room to talk, especially if it's going to effect ND's appearance.

The only thing that worries me if Nintendo leaves behind the hardware aspect, is that Microsoft will just start throwing around endless amounts of cash to get all their games.

It wasn't Naughty Dog. It was a guy who founded Naughty Dog, back when it wasn't even called Naughty Dog!
