Amon's "Post a Classical Piece a Day"

Posted

Similar to the other threads around here. This time, for my favorite kind of music.

Since it's Christmas Eve, lets commemorate the occasions with a Baroque piece written on this day hundreds of years ago, and makes your typical Christmas song look lame.

Sorry for the slack, busy these past few days with family. Lets have what I firmly believe should replace "God save the King/Queen" as the national anthem of the United Kingdom.

This will officially become my favorite music thread!

Let's get a little grim dark.

The last piece ever written by Mozart was a Requiem. A requiem is essentially music for a funeral mass. The piece was commissioned by an anonymous person who showed up to Mozart's apartment masked and cloaked and handed him a pouch of money. He was not given any due date for the completion of the piece and was not told who it would be for.

As Mozart began working on the piece, he became extremely sick, fainting several times. At a showing of "The Magic Flute" Mozart fell deathly ill, returned home, and began working on the Requiem up until he died. It remained unfinished and was completed by his understudy, his wife, or rival composer and friend, Antonio Saliari. The Requiem's first performance would be at a memorial to Mozart after his funeral.

It's believed that Mozart died of a slow acting poison or unknown disease. Some suspect that Mozart was killed.

The identity of the commissioner was never truly discovered and remains a subject of debate to this day. Theories range from a crazed fan who believed that the only person who should write Mozart's Requiem would be Mozart himself. Another culprit is Antonio Saliari, who despite being a friend of Mozart, was one of his biggest rivals. There's also the belief that a member of the Free Masons had him killed, due to Mozart placing masonic imagery in his compositions and operas. Some even will go as far to say that the commissioner was the ghost of his overbearing father.

Enjoy some highlights from the Requiem, or the whole thing.

Yes, people are still writing Classical compositions. You typically hear it in your movies and video games. Enjoy a piece from a group called Two Steps From Hell, which has a very modern twist towards end.

Two Steps from Hell- All's Hell that Ends Well

Two Steps From Hell is a freaking musical god! Makes me happy to see others post about it.

Didn't know it was defined as Classical though. I always just called it "Orchestral' or some variation of such. I always though Classical was only used to refer to music from the likes of Bach and Beethoven, and others in that period. I guess I learn something new everyday. xD

Classical Music is a term that's extremely general. It's really meant to describe music that brings back images of ancient Greece and Rome. Technically, most "Classical" composers don't fit the term, however, it's what stayed. I can't describe what's defined as classical music the best, but you can read about it here.

Stumbled into this when I was listening to one of my old song playlist. Forgotten how great it sounds.
