Chapter 31: The Pieces Are Coming Together

It’s pitch black dark, and it’s cold and a harsh breeze flows through the trees, and two days have passed.  Vanitas, Xion and Dexeres have been wandering the forest, searching for the hooded people Merida had mentioned, in the hopes that they could learn of Sora, Donald and Goofy’s location.  So far, their search hadn’t led to any results.  Now they were in a small camp site they had built up, battling the elements as they planned what they would do for the following day.  “So, we’re at a dead end.  What’ll we do now?” Vanitas asked, throwing some firewood to keep the fire burning.  Xion remained silent, for she had nothing.  Dexeres, on the other hand, looked towards the blackness of the forest, as if he was calculating something.  Vanitas walked over to him and looked onto the blackness as well.  “What is it?” Vanitas asked.  Dexeres shook his head.  “I sense something bad…something of great omen is about to happen.  I can’t tell what or who it is, but whatever it is, it’s dangerous, and it’s close…we have to keep a close watch on our campsite.” he said, glancing over his shoulder at Vanitas.

Xion was nestled up in her sleeping bag, and all she could think about was Roxas.  The thought of something happening to him was too much for her to bear.  She hadn’t seen him in a long time, so the fact that he had disappeared so suddenly worried her all the more, but then she clenched her fist and held I tightly to her chest.  “No.  I know Roxas will be okay.  He has to be.  He’s strong, and he’s smart, so he’ll find his way out of any situation.  Because that’s the Roxas I love.” she thought to herself, and then she looked to her right, where Vanitas and Dexeres stood, looking into the blackness of the forest.  Suddenly, when the breeze blew to her left, she saw a will-o-the-wisp, urging her to stand up.  She then stood up and shouted to Vanitas and Dexeres.  “Guys, let’s follow the will-o-the-wisp!” she said.

Vanitas and Dexeres took a moment to notice the small blue flame, and then they nodded in unison, and they started following the will-o-the-wisp, as a trail of them started to form the deeper they headed into the forest.  Dexeres felt like they were being watched, and he didn’t like the feeling one bit.  Still, they pressed on, wary of the dangers ahead, ready to face whatever was waiting for them.  “Remember guys, we have to be careful.  Stay sharp!” he shouted out.  Vanitas rolled his eyes and smirked.  “Yeah, yeah you worrywart, I get what your saying.  Now keep up or you’ll be left behind!” he teased as he ran faster.  Xion was at the front, keeping a constant watch on the woll-o-the-wisps, making sure that she wouldn’t lose sight of them.  “Where are you leading us?” she said to herself in curiosity.

As the minutes passed by, they felt a presence drawing ever nearer.  Dexeres then rushed to the lead and looked at Vanitas and Xion.  “On the count of three…we attack.  One…Two…Three!” he shouted as all three of them were about to attack, when they saw Merida, who screamed, and a bear that was beside her fell on its back.  Xion gasped.  “It’s a bear!  It’s attacking Merida!” she shouted, and just when they were about to attack the bear, Merida spread her arms wide.  “No!  Please, stop, she’s not a bear, she’s my mum!” she screamed.  At that, Dexeres tilted his head.  “Mom?  That thing?” he asked, feeling baffled by Merida’s statement.  Catching her breath, Merida nods and she looks at her mother.  “It’s…a long story…a pretty long one at that.” she said shyly.  Vanitas then stepped forward and crossed his arms.  “Well, if you don’t have time to tell us the whole story, then tell us the vital parts.” he said, in a slightly rude tone.  Merida then takes a deep breath, and she sits down and starts to tell her story, while her mother lays beside her.

Meanwhile, in Castle Oblivion, Brenxaly and Lixane had been exploring Castle Oblivion, trying to unravel its secrets, and trying to see if they could revert it back to the Land Of Departure.  So far, they had no luck.  They had explored some of the basement floors and some of the upper floors, but nothing had come to light.  “So, should we keep going up the castle floors and hope we find something?” Lixane said with an exasperated sigh.  Brenxaly shook her head. “No…we would have been able to find what we were looking for long ago.  This castle will not yield its secrets to us.” she said in a frustrated tone.  Suddenly, the phantom sword that they had summoned unleashed an ominous aura, and then the two women smirked, for it seems that they had picked up something.  “Well then, let’s see what the phantom sword has found for us.” Lixane notioned, as she pulled out the sword from the ground, and as soon as she did so, the ectoplasm field started distorting, and it showed a neon light leading straight into a wall.  The phantom sword then unleashed a beam of darkness that broke the wall, revealing a hidden room.  Brenxaly smiled and looked at Lixane.  “It looks like we’ve hit the jackpot.” she said.

Lixane nodded and laughed.  “Now all that’s left is to report this to Master Xylek.  He’ll be most pleased.” she said with a smirk.  Brenxaly nodded in agreement, and then she put her hand on Lixane’s shoulder.  “Yes, but before that, we should explore this room first and see what it contains.  Then we can go back to Master Xylek.” she suggested.  “Ah, I see.  That’s a good idea.” Lixane said, and with that, they both headed inside the room, which, like the rest of the castle, was completely white.  As they headed deeper into the room, a barrier suddenly rose up and covered the wall where they had entered from.  Brenxaly then cursed under her breath.  “It’s a trap!” she shouted, and then she glanced over at Lixane, who was petrified, and only when Brenxaly looked at what Lixane was looking, she too felt shocked.  For what appeared before them was a powerful force, something they hadn’t come across before.

(End Song Here)

(Start Song Here)

The powerful force was probably fourteen feet tall, and it was completely clad in armor, a dark armor that emanated an intimidating aura, and it had bright red eyes, and its face could not be seen.  The only thing that could be seen of its face was a pitch black darkness seeping out, and it summoned a great and powerful lance, as it prepared to attack the two women.  “Lixane, snap out of it!” Brenxaly shouted as she pushed her out of the way and dodged an attack from the armored warrior.  “What in blazes is that thing!?” Lixane asked, still shaking off the shock of such a thing attacking them.  Brenxaly shook her head and glared at Lixane.  “No time to talk, we have to take that thing out!” she shouted as she delivered the first strike, casting Magnega to try and pull the armored warrior so that she could strike with her phantom sword. Lixane quickly followed suit as she summoned a bow and shot ectoplasmic arrows.

Two of the arrows pierced the warrior’s armor, but it managed to deflect the other one, ricocheting it back towards Lixane, who jumped out of the way and prepared her next shot.  Brenxaly swung her phantom sword to the armored warrior’s legs so that she could get its attention.  So far, it was working, as the armored warrior turned around to focus its attacks on Brenxaly.  Lixane took this opportunity and she charged her arrow with all the ectoplasmic energy she was capable of summoning, and then she shot the arrow.  She was confident that the arrow would definitely put an end to the armored warrior, but much to her shock, the armored warrior caught the arrow, and then it stabbed Brenxaly near the heart, and she screamed of agony.  “Brenxaly, no!” Lixane shouted, as the armored warrior flung Brenxaly to the wall, turning around to focus its attention on Lixane.  Now she felt ultimate terror, for her friend had passed out, and now she was in danger of dying, against a powerful foe she didn’t even expect to face.  “You monster…you won’t hurt Brenxaly!  I will tame you, and you will come under Master Xylek’s control!” she shouted, ready for battle.

Back at the forest, Merida had finished telling Vanitas, Xion and Dexeres about her current situation, and now they understood the circumstances she was in.  “I see.  So now your trying to turn your mother back into a human.” Dexeres said in a pensive tone.  Merida nodded distressfully and looked down.  “Yes.  I did a terrible mistake, and now I have to set things right…I need to set things right!” she said in determination.  Xion was about to say something, when all of a sudden, a roar could be heard nearby.  “What was that!?” Xion exclaimed, now wary and cautious about what was coming to them.  Merida looked in shock towards the deep, dark woods.  “Mor’du, the demon bear.” were the only words she could mutter.  As the rest turned their heads to see the giant demon bear, a sudden wave of darkness seethed into the woods, and Merida was suddenly pushed out along with her mother, and now they had been cast deep in the woods.  Vanitas, Xion and Dexeres were now in full alert, their Keyblades at the ready, and then they saw a portal open up before them all of a sudden.

(Start Song Here)

From the portal, Xylek himself stood, with an amused look on his face, much to the shock of the Keyblade Wielders.  “You are probably wondering how I am alive.” Xylek teased.  “Well, that is something I shall explain in due time.  Now you are probably desperate, searching for Sora, Donald and Goofy.  Here I give you the opportunity to head towards them straight in.” he said with a harsh laugh.  Dexeres gripped his Keyblade tightly and pointed it at Xylek. “You monster!  Because of you, countless people suffered all over the worlds!  You don’t have the right to act so confidently!” he declared in anger.  Xylek simply waved his hand dismissively and rolled his eyes. “You are pathetic, Dexeres.  You would have better served us, and you would have been of great help in my goal to obtain Kingdom Hearts.  But alas, you are a fool.” he said.

“You’re the only fool here!” Dexeres snapped back, as he leapt high in the air, ready to deliver an assault on Xylek, but all Xylek had to do was snap his fingers to make Dexeres fall to the ground, helpless and paralyzed.  Vanitas and Xion went to Dexeres and stood by him.  “Xylek, you monster!” Xion shouted.  Xylek simply laughed again, clearly enjoying himself.  “The time for you to fight will come soon, just you wait.  For now, almost all the pieces have fallen into the board.  A little more patience will go a long way.  If you wish to save your friends, come through this portal.” he said as he disappeared.  Vanitas and Xion looked at each other uneasily, and then they cast Esuna on Dexeres so he could  recover from his paralysis.  “What should we do?” Xion asked softly.  She looked at Vanitas and Dexeres with stressed eyes.

Vanitas thought for a moment of what to answer.  For all they knew, this could be a trap, but he knew Sora, Donald and Goofy were on the other side.  Without hesitation, Vanitas took one step into the portal and then looked back at Xion and Dexeres.  “Guys, it’s now or never.  We might not get another chance like this again, so even if there’s a trap waiting for us, we have to go through this portal.  Our friends are counting on us!” he said, looking at them strictly.  Dexeres nodded in agreement.  “He’s right.  When it comes to our friends, we dive headfirst into danger, no matter what awaits us.” he said with determination, and Xion smiled.  “Your right guys.  Now come on, let’s go through that portal!” she said, and with that, the three of them warped through the portal, and when they found themselves on the other side, they were awe struck by the fortress they had just stumbled into.  “Now this is going to be a lot harder than I thought.” Xion said as she saw the endless hallways and passages and towers that loomed before them.  Now they were in enemy territory, and they were prepared for what would happen.

Chapter 32: A Trial By Fire

Many days had passed, and only despair and sadness had loomed during these days.  Ventus, whose body had practically gotten immobilized, was now under Jexana’s control.  Trish and Kyle wept and grieved, thinking that the worst had happened, and Ventus had been struggling, screaming to the point of fatigue so that they could hear him, but the darkness engulfing him was too great and powerful.  Over the course of these days, Kyle and Trish had come every night to stay with him, and they’d tell him about Lewis and about how he succeded in repairing the time machine, and how they encountered the Bowler Hat Guy and defeated Doris.  Kyle would tell him about their battles, and how Lewis had gone back into his own time, after having talked to his future self, realizing that he had to learn to keep moving forward.  Ventus wished with all his heart that he could be able to speak to his loved ones, but Jexana kept him sealed inside, making him incapable of doing such a thing.  Now it did seem that Ventus belonged to Jexana.

Turning around and seeing Jexana at the far side of his consciousness, he glared at her in silence, thinking of how he’d be able to break free.  Jexana made a seductive smile and she started walking towards him and touched his face. “Well then darling, I believe our first act together begins now.” she said, her voice smooth like silk.  Ventus gasped.  “What do you mean!?” Ventus asked alarmingly, but Jexana put her finger on his lips.  “Shhh.” she said, and with the snap of her fingers, a portal of darkness opened, and Tristh and Kyle immediately noticed it and summoned their Keyblades, and a helpless Ventus could do nothing but watch.  “What is this!?” Kyle shouted, feeling uneasy as he gripped his Keyblade tightly.  Jexana then disappeared from Ventus’ conscience and then appeared across the portal.

(Start Song Here)

“You!”  Trish shouted angrily, and Jexana laughed, feeling quite pleased with herself.  “Tsk, tsk, tsk, anger will get you nowhere Trish.  It’ll only cause you to be reckless.  Don’t you agree so, Ven?” she asked as she tilted her head, making an innocent but obviously deceiving smile.  At that, Kyle and Trish turned around, and they saw Ventus, Keyblade in hand, raising his weapon against them.  Now the battle was over.  Ventus was now under Jexana’s control, mind, body and soul.  Trish and Kyle dodged Ventus’ attacks, but he proceeded to cast Aeroga, flinging them into the portal, where they were now in a tall cliff overlooking an ominous looking fortress.  “The pieces are finally all here.  Now Master Xylek’s masterpiece can start taking its form!” Jexana said, arms spread wide, with an evil smile on her face.

With that, she walked towards Ventus, who stood there, lifeless and still, as if he were nothing more than a puppet.  His eyes were pale blue, and his face showed a grim expression, and only then did Trish and Kyle realize that Ventus was being controlled by Jexana.  To make matters worse, Jexana turned Ventus’ face towards her, and she kissed him passionately, looking towards Trish as she kissed him, savoring the flavor of his lips.  Trish was speechless, and her eyes immediately flared with anger and hatred.  “Jexana, you’ll pay for that!” she shouted, as she slammed her Keyblade to the ground, causing the earth to shake and spike out pillars of stone.  Jexana and Ventus dodged all the pillars, and they stood on top of the tallest one, while Trish remained angered, tears rolling out of her eyes.  Kyle put his hand on her shoulder and looked at her.  “Keep it together Mom, we have to snap Dad out of this!” he said with determination.  Trish wiped off her tears and she breathed in deeply, calming herself down and nodding in agreement with Kyle.  “Alright, let’s do this!” she said.

Jexana rolled her eyes and she laughed, swinging her legs back and forth as she was sitting on the pillar.  “You really don’t get it, do you?  Ventus will no longer be the man you knew, because now he’s mine, and he will never find his way out of my spell.” she said as she smirked, waving her hand playfully. Kyle then looked upwards and noticed Firaga spheres forming around them.  “Mom, Jexana’s going to attack us, big time!” he shouted, noticing the Firaga spheres increasing.  Trish glanced over her shoulder at Kyle and then whispered.  “Let’s try out the technique we’d been practicing back home.  Do you think your ready for it?” she asked.  Kyle nodded.  “You know I am!”  Trish smiled.  “Let’s do this, for Ventus’ sake.” she said, and with that, Trish stood defiantly and glared at Jexana, who signaled Ventus to go forth and fight them.  Trish waited as she saw Ventus lunging towards her.  As she waited, he came closer to striking her, but she still waited.  “Just a little more Ventus…come just a little bit closer.” she said to herself.  At that, Jexana curved her brow, now curious as to what Trish was waiting for.  Trish waited just a little more, until…

“Kyle, now!” Trish shouted, and in that moment, Trish immediately disappeared, and Kyle reappeared in her stead, and he transformed into his Feral form, and he planted his feet firmly in the ground as Ventus clashed his Keyblade with his own, and to make sure Kyle wouldn’t hurt Ventus, he simply flung him over, causing him to fall to the ground on the other side.  After that, Feral Kyle unleashed powerful dark auras, and Trish reappeared and rode one of the dark auras straight towards Ventus as she fought him, desperate to make him come back to his senses.  “Ventus, this isn’t you!  Please come back to us!” Trish pleaded, but she wasn’t able to reach Ventus, as he still kept attacking her.  She then glanced over her shoulder at Feral Kyle quickly and she lifted her hand, showing two fingers from her hand and she mouthed out silently.  “Phase 2.”

Feral Kyle nodded, and he started to charge immense energy, the nearby trees swaying in his direction.  The ground started to crumble too, showing what immense power Kyle was keeping within.  Jexana started laughing and she crossed her arms. “So you are willing to hurt Ventus just to make him come back to you?  I’m afraid that even if you do that, he won’t come back.” she said as she smirked, and then Trish made a victorious smile.  Jexana didn’t like this at all.  “What?  What is this?  Why are you smiling!?  You’ve lost!” Jexana shouted, sounding irritated.  As Trish held Ventus back by blocking his attacks, she was able to perform the Reversal ability that Ventus had taught her, and she imprisoned him in a spell made of Holy magic, and she pushed him back towards a group of trees, and Ventus lay unconscious.  Everything had gone just as Trish had planned.

“Now Kyle!” Trish shouted, and Feral Kyle at first deceived Jexana’s eyes by having her believe that his attack was headed for Ventus, but what Jexana didn’t realize is that it was an illusion, and Feral Kyle grabbed Jexana by the throat, lifting her up.  She was surprised and shocked, and she wasn’t able to summon any energy to fight back, and as she looked down, she saw trish charging up her Keyblade with light.  “Now Jexana, you will be witness to the power Ventus gave me and Kyle!  Face the light!” she shouted, as a beam of light shot towards Jexana, and before it could hit, Feral Kyle got out of the way as the light beam pierced through Jexana’s body, and then Trish dashed towards her and performed her Light Splicer attack, then finally making one final swoop and landing on the ground gracefully, and above her, a tremendous display of light could be seen, tearing Jexana apart as she screamed in agonizing pain.  “It’s over Jexana, you’re the one that has lost.” she said, Feral Kyle by her side, his energy ever powerful. “You can never take away the bond that we share with Ventus.” Feral Kyle said, as Jexana lay on the floor, weakened and shocked by the sudden surprise attack.

(End Song Here)

Jexana looked at them, speechless and angered and frustrated.  “How!?  How is this possible!?  Nngh!  You ingrates!” she shouted, her eyes flaring up in anger and frustration.  Just as Trish was going to dispel the Holy prison she had made for Ventus, Jexana quickly stroke her hand to the ground and made giant snakes of darkness appear to disorient Trish and Feral Kyle.  She took this opportunity to disappear and reappear by Ventus’ side, and she quickly grabbed him and leapt towards the tallest stone pillar and she smirked.  “I won’t let you have him back that easily.” she said as she disappeared along with him.  Trish and Feral Kyle quickly dispatched the dark snakes, and then, after a looming silence, Trish knelt on the ground and started crying, and Feral Kyle reverted back to normal.  “Am I not good enough for him?”she asked in a whisper, clenching her fists.  “Am I just not enough for him?  He could have come back to his senses by feeling my heart…but he didn’t…does he even love me?” she asked, feeling her heart ache.  Kyle put his hand on Trish’s shoulder and hugged her tightly.  He knew he had to offer comforting words to his mother.

“Mom, please don’t think like that!  You know that Dad loves you, you know he does!  I bet he’s fighting just as much as we are to be liberated from Jexana’s spell.  You know that he’s the type of guy that never gives up no matter what life throws at him!” Kyle said confidently, smiling at Trish.  It seemed that the words made her feel better as well, for she felt at ease.  “Y-you really think so?” Trish asked softly.  Kyle nodded with much determination.  “Of course I’m sure!  You know that Dad has devoted his life to us, and now it’s time that we repayed the favor!  We’re going to show him that we’re also as devoted as he is!”  he said with a smile.  Trish wiped off her tears and felt new resolve wash over her.  “You know what Kyle?  Your right!  It’s foolish of me to doubt Ventus when he’s done so much for us!  Come on, let’s go!” she said, her face full of resolve and determination.

Kyle felt relieved that Trish had been able to recover her willpower, but Kyle himself had almost lost his.  Inside, he kept his feelings of fear and sadness, because he knew he had to be strong for his parents.  It hadn’t been the first time they were in danger.  Now, more than ever, he knew that they needed him by their side, and that’s what he would do.  Because after all the struggles they had been through, he wasn’t going to let it all end just like that.  And so, with that, he took a deep breath and headed towards Trish, as they both leapt down the cliff and landed softly to the ground below.  The closer they walked towards the fortress, the more they could sense the ominous, foreboding aura that surrounded it.  “Mom, stay alert…” Kyle whispered to Trish, and she nodded in agreement, as they went towards what looked like the back entrance.  Seeing their opportunity to go inside, they went in without hesitation.

As they headed inside, they noticed the enormity of the fortress, but strangest of all was the fact that there didn’t seem to be anyone around.  “This is most definitely a trap…” Trish thought to herself, feeling uneasy and gripping her Keyblade tightly.  Kyle, on the other hand, had his eyes on the walls, the towers, pretty much everywhere, for he sensed something was watching them.  They wandered the pathways of the fortress for what seemed like long minutes, until they heard a distant noise.  “Over there!” Kyle whispered to Trish, and as they both looked to their right, they saw three people coming towards them.  Trish was going to attack but then noticed that it was Vanitas, Xion and Dexeres!  They quickly ran towards them and greeted each other, relieved to see friendly faces.  “You guys! You’re here!” Kyle said happily, and Vanitas nodded.  “Heh, why wouldn’t we be here?  We have to settle things with our foes, so I’m glad to see you two are ready.  Where’s Ventus?” he asked, noticing his absence.  Kyle looked down sadly and didn’t answer, and Trish talked in his stead.  “You see…Ventus is under the control of a woman named Jexana…she’s one of our foes.  We fought them just a few minutes ago, and he’s still under her control.  But we will free him!” she said with confidence.

At that, Vanitas shook his head and sighed.  “That’s what Ventus gets for letting his guard down.  But well, with you two to pull him back from the darkness, I’m sure he’ll be free.” he said with a smirk.  Dexeres then stepped forward and bowed to Trish and Kyle, and he then looked towards the pathways of the fortress.  “I’m glad to see you both, but right now, we’ll have to leave the talking for later.  We have to rescue Sora, Donald and Goofy!” he said urgently.  At that, Trish and Kyle gasped.  “Captured!?” Trish exclaimed.  Xion nodded in confirmation.  “Yes.  And this is where they are being kept prisoners.  I’m sure it’s a trap from the enemy, but we have no choice!  We have to rescue them! And we have to find out what happened to Terra, Aqua and Roxas!” she explained.  Kyle then crossed his arms, feeling troubled.  “They got captured too?” he asked with a worried tone.  Dexeres shook his head grimly.  “We don’t know what happened to them…it’s something that’s deeply troubling me.”  he said grimly.  Trish then stepped forward and put her hands on her hips.  “Guys, the important thing is that we’re here.  We’ll do all in our power to rescue our friends and stop our foes.  Nothing will stop us!”

--------------------------------------------------------------

And so, our heroes have united, and it seems that there is still hope for rescuing their captured friends.  But will they be ready for what lies ahead?  Will Ventus be able to be freed of Jexana’s spell?  Will there be no respite for our heroes?  Has the enemy already won?  Keep it in mind, for next chapter, Riku, Dawn, Kairi and Mickey protect Valgard from The Elder and the counsel!  Will they be able to come out of this battle with their lives?  Find out in Chapter 33: “Realization.”

Chapter 33: Realization

(Start Song Here)

Without the slightest hesitation, the counsel members obeyed The Elder, and they started their battle with Riku, Dawn, Kairi, Mickey and Valgard.  Riku glanced over his shoulder at Valgard, who was distraught and he then turned around and placed his hand on his shoulder.  “I know this is a difficult thing for you to do.  But I promise that we won’t bring harm to them.  We will make them come to their senses.” he said to Valgard.  After a moment of silence, Valgard nodded slowly.  “You are right.  We need to make them see the direness of our situation.” he said, summoning his Keyblade. Kairi and Mickey were also at the ready, and The Elder pointed his Keyblade towards Riku.  “You, harbinger of darkness, you shall know your place! In the name of the Order of the X-Blade, I shall deliver judgement to you!” he shouted, and so they all began their clash.  Valgard charged towards Trevor and Damian, who were close to Shira, who had restraints.  He shook his head in disappointment.  “My comrades, can you not see that this situation requires that we work together?  Why is it you cannot see it?” he asked.

Trevor and Damian said nothing, for they simply clashed their blades with Valgard’s.  At the far side of the room, The Elder commanded Sierra, Milani, and Edeya, the other three females of the group, to dispatch Kairi and Mickey while he took his focus on Riku.  The three warriors closed in on Kairi and Mickey, and they stood back to back, heavily focusing their attention at their opponents.  Mickey looked worried, and he glanced over at Kairi with sad eyes.  “Gosh Kairi, how will we be able to defeat these folks without harming them?” he asked, distressed.  Kairi was precisely trying to think of such a way, and then she glanced back at Mickey.  “For now, we’ll just have to block, dodge and see what we can come up with from there.” she whispered to him, and he nodded.  “Alright, sounds like a plan!”

As the battle raged throughout the room, The Elder slowly walked towards Riku, glancing at Dawn, donning his armor and charging his power.  “Riku…you could have very well avoided all of this.  You could have been able to spare Dawn of such suffering…” he said as he pointed his Keyblade directly at Riku’s throat, but Riku quickly moved the Keyblade out of the way with his own.  “What are you saying!?  Don’t you understand!?  We need each other!  The threat that’s intent on destroying all worlds is bigger than us!  This is something much bigger than we could imagine!  You need to stop being so closed minded!” he shouted, hoping to knock some sense into The Elder.  But The Elder simply scoffed.  “Nonsense!  The Order Of The X-Blade has served as the protection of all worlds since time immemorial!” he said with pride.

Riku shook his head and lowered his Keyblade, feeling disgusted.  “Is that so?  Then where have you been all these years?  Back when Xehanort had threatened to destroy everything just so he could see what happened beyond the Keyblade War!?  The worlds were on the brink of falling into darkness, but me, Sora, and the rest of my friends put a stop to it!  Where were you then!?” he shouted in anger and desperation.  The Elder, now clearly infuriated, clenched his fists.  “How dare you!?  You do not even know of the countless sacrifices I have made, that my comrades have made, to secure peace throughout all the worlds!  You are an ignorant fool!” he shouted, but Riku shook his head in disapproval.  “No, if anything, you are the fool, for thinking that you don’t need help.  Everyone needs help from time to time.  And there’s no need to fear the darkness.  Darkness can fight alongside the light for the greater good, and I’m living proof of that!” he said, putting his hand to his chest.  The Elder stood silent, and then he raised his Keyblade as it clashed with Riku’s.  “Silence!”

But Riku dodged the attack and leapt back.  He didn’t want to harm The Elder, for he knew that he was also fighting for the greater good.  But the way he was going about it was wrong, and he had to knock some sense into him.  It wasn’t just to make him come to his senses either, but because time was running out.  For each minute that they kept fighting, the ominous darkness was drawing ever closer.  “If you won’t listen to reason…then I’ll have to defeat you in combat.  Only then will you realize your mistakes!” he shouted, and with that, he charged towards the Elder, ready to give his all to the battle.  Meanwhile, Kairi and Mickey struggled to fight against Sierra, Milani and Edeya, casting Protect to fend off their attacks.  Mickey glanced over at Kairi and shook his head.  “Gosh Kairi, I don’t know how much longer we can hold these attacks!  We’re gonna have to strike back!” he said in a worried tone.  Kairi shook her head and thought for a moment, and then she opened her eyes wide.  “I got it!  Mickey, follow my lead!” she shouted, and Mickey nodded. “Alright, will do!” he said as he nodded.

With that, Kairi and Mickey broke their Protect spells, and they counterattacked by swinging their Keyblades to the ground, causing tremors in the ground that made Sierra, Milani and Edeya fall down.  Then Kairi concentrated her energy, a radiant aura emanating from her, as she felt enormous power coursing through her.  Mickey noticed what she was doing, and so he leapt above her and poured his energy towards her, and just before Sierra, Milani and Edeya were able to attack, Kairi unleashed her bind spell, causing chains of light to materialize out of thin air, and as the chains appeared, they quickly wrapped around the three women, rendering them helpless and unable to fight.  Kairi sighed of relief.  “There, this way they’ll be out of the fight and we won’t have to hurt them.” she said, feeling a little tuckered out after having charged so much energy.  “You did good Kairi!” Mickey said as he smiled.

Meanwhile, Valgard was doing his best to defeat Trevor and Damian, all the while keeping a close eye on Shira, who was watching the battle in restraints.  He could see the pain and suffering in her eyes, and he couldn’t stand it.  When Trevor and Damian lunged towards him, he swung his Keyblade in a wide arc, causing the two counsel members to tumble towards the wall.  Valgard was now weary and he felt heavy, as if his body wanted to drop down like a metal to a magnet.  Then he felt a sudden burst of renewed energy, as he noticed that he had been cured by the Curaga spell, and when he looked back, he saw Kairi rushing to his side and standing by him.  “I’m here to help!” Kairi said as she smiled and nodded, along with Mickey, who was ready to help as well.  “Thank you my friends.” Valgard said appreciatively, and with that, they were ready to continue the battle.

As Valgard, Kairi and Mickey fought off Trevor and Damian, Riku and Dawn were holding The Elder at bay.  Dawn couldn’t muster the willpower to fight, since she didn’t want to fight against The Elder. She was trying to speak to The Elder again and again, but he wouldn’t listen.  It was making her feel frustrated, and Riku couldn’t stand it anymore.  “Enough!” he shouted, as he pinned The Elder’s Keyblade to the ground and grabbed him by the throat.  “Stop fighting a pointless battle and listen to what Dawn has to say!” he shouted, making his demand.  The Elder remained silent, and Dawn, with tears in her eyes, began to speak.  “Elder…you fail to understand what’s happening all around you!  Can’t you see that your pointless accusations against the Keyblade Wielders are unnecessary?  They want the same thing that we do!  Peace for all worlds and the balance of light and darkness!  Why can’t you see this!?  Why do you so blindly accuse them of being in your way!?” she implored as she cried.  The Elder seemed less hostile now, and Riku let go of him, and for a few seconds, everything seemed grim and somber.  “Because…they cannot be trusted.” The Elder said, plain and simple.

Dawn shook her head, feeling disbelief and shock at The Elder’s words.  “How can you say that, after all they’ve done to secure the worlds!?  Do you not believe they can be able to be of help to us!?” she asked, making her voice be heard loud and clear.  The Elder staye silent for a few seconds before answering.  “They do not have to meddle in these affairs.  The Order of the X-Blade will be enough to stave off this threat.” he said, showing no emotion to his words.  Dawn, now irritated, knelt down on the floor, punching the ground in frustration.  “Really!?  We are enough to stave off this threat!?  Then why do you cower in the shadows instead of taking action!?” she shouted, her tone rebellious and determined.  The Elder drew his Keyblade from the ground, and he gripped it tightly.  “I see that Riku has taken over your mind, and your heart…and it seems you will not waver…then in that case, I shall destroy what is dearest to you!” he said, as he turned around to slay an unguarded Riku.  Dawn reacted on instinct, and she leapt in front of Riku and received the fatal blow.  Riku opened his eyes wide in shock.

For a few seconds, it was like the whole world had gone silent, and everyone in the counsel room had ceased their fighting.  The Elder himself was shocked and horrified at what he had done, as Dawn fell to the ground, lifeless and bleeding.  Riku fell on his knees and he turned Dawn around, placing her body on his lap, and he held her close, kissing her forehead and crying.  “No, Dawn, no, please no!  Stay with me!  Dawn, stay with me!” he cried, feeling as if his heart had been torn apart.  Realizing what had happened, Trevor and Damian unsummoned their Keyblades and released Shira from her restraints, and Kairi released Sierra, Milani and Edeya from their chains.  Everyone stood in a circle, surrounding The Elder, Riku and Dawn, who were in the center.  Only a grim and terrible silence loomed in the room, for everything seemed lifeless.

The Elder, feeling weak and powerless, knelt on the ground, looking at his hands, now realizing the error of his ways.  He had just slain that which he had sworn to protect.  “What have I done…?” he whispered to himself, his voice shaking in sadness and fear.  Riku kept crying, and Dawn remained lifeless, and everyone bowed their heads down, for nothing, no words, no speeches could be able to make this any different.  Valgard clenched his fists, and he went towards The Elder and pulled him upwards and then punched him in the face.  Valgard was furious, his sorrow apparent in his eyes.  “Do you see what your actions have caused!?  This is the way you want to establish peace!  Your heart and soul have rotten, you have become that which we had all sworn to destroy!” he shouted, and everyone stayed silent and listened.  Valgard wanted to make his point clear.

“It was a mistake having imprisoned Dawn in her room for all these years!  She had been yearning to know of the outside world, to experience the wonders of life, and we, your counsel, had obeyed your orders to keep her in the fortress.  Day in and day out I regretted that decision, but alas, I lacked the courage to stand up to you, because I respected you, and I did not want to dishonor the counsel!  I put my own fears first, and I didn’t think of anyone else…and so when Dawn decided to leave this place, I gladly helped her!  I felt proud of her for doing as her heart commanded, she did what I had been unable to do!  You talk about protecting the balance of light and darkness, but that does not mean that you have to shun the darkness as a whole!  Elder, you have lost all my respect…you do not deserve any of it.” he said, feeling frustrated, tears rolling down his eyes.  Suddenly, Dawn’s Keyblade materialized in her hand, and at that, the counsel members were awe struck, especially The Elder.  “A Keyblade…but how?” he asked silently.  Valgard nodded.  “That is right.  Dawn received the power of the Keyblade because she was deemed worthy!” he said.  Suddenly, a blinding light covered the entire room, and everyone was unable to see for the moment.  Now things were about to take a drastic turn…

Chapter 34: Wrath Of The Goddess

(Start Song Here)

Vanitas, Dexeres, Xion, Trish and Kyle had begun their ascent through the formidable enemy stronghold, all the way remaining extra cautious, for now that they were in enemy territory, they had to be on their guard.  But strangely enough, no Unborn were seen anywhere.  It almost seemed a little too easy.  Kyle looked left and right and northwards and southwards, but the fortress was as quiet as a grave.  It was unsettling and quite intimidating.  “Guys, what do you think the enemy’s waiting for?” Kyle asked in a whisper, gripping his Keyblade tightly.  Dexeres shook his head and he looked at the boy.  “I don’t know for sure Kyle, but one thing I do know is that whoever’s waiting for us is prepared to welcome us.” he said. As he finished speaking those words, a radiant light caught everyone’s attention, a light outside of the fortress that shone brightly, almost as if it was a second sun.  “W-what is that!?” Xion asked, baffled by the wondrous light that had emanated.  They all remained hypnotized by it, as if the light had drawn them in under its spell.

It was only after a few seconds that they heard someone laughing, and they quickly turned around and saw a singular man standing before them, and Dexeres immediately recognized who it was.  The man smiled and looked onwards towards the light.  “Ah yes, the light of the Goddess.  It looks like the girl has fulfilled her purpose. Everything we’ve planned for will soon be completed.” he said confidently.  Dexeres pointed his Keyblade at the man.  “You!  You’re the one who I fought in the Dwarf Woodlands!  Emmxett!  What do you mean the light of the Goddess!?” he shouted.  At that, Emmxett clapped his hands.  “So, you remember my name.  I feel honored, Keyblade Wielder.  And as for your question, the only thing I can answer is that great and wonderful things are coming.” he said with a smirk.

Vanitas leapt forward and charged towards Emmxett, but the man simply dodged the attack and pushed Vanitas back with a powerful gust of wind.  Vanitas again stood up, and he clenched his fists.  “We’ve had enough of your wonderful things and whatnot, so just shut up and fight!” Vanitas shouted.  Emmxett chuckled to himself and sighed of amusement.  “Ha, aren’t you the eager one?  Well, if it’s a battle you want…” he started to say, as he summoned his sword, Kuzuri and made a barrier to ensure none of them could escape.  “Then it’s a battle you’ll get!” he finished, and with that, he flung his Kuzuri in two wide arcs, sending powerful gusts of wind towards the Keyblade Wielders.  They were all knocked down for the moment, and Dexeres had his gaze intent on Emmxett.  “Your finished!” he shouted.

“Oh, am I?” Emmxett teased, and with that, the battle began.  Vanitas, Dexeres and Xion were the first to attack, and each of them tried to provide a good enough distraction, but Emmxett wasn’t the type of enemy to get distracted easily. He blocked their attacks with his Kuzuri, and then he summoned small daggers of darkness, and he put them above the Keyblade Wielders and started flinging them towards them, as they tried to block every dagger. “In your efforts to distract me, it looks like I’ve distracted you!” Emmxett said, as he disappeared then reappeared behind Vanitas and hit him in the spine, sending him pummelling to the ground, then he turned towards Xion and punched her in the stomach, and she was flung against a nearby wall, and just as he was going to go for Dexeres, he saw that Dexeres had already taken notice of his attack, and he dodged it and clashed blades with Emmxett.  “I like you!  You are a worthy opponent my friend!  A truly worthy opponent for me and my Kuzuri!” Emmxett said as he laughed, clearly enjoying the battle at hand.

Soon after, Trish and Kyle leapt up and flung their Keyblades towards Emmxett, but their attacks were to no avail, as he simply deflected the Keyblades back at them.  Trish and Kyle then landed on the ground, and then they saw Vanitas and Xion, who were unconscious, and they went towards them to heal them, but Emmxett prevented such actions by flinging his daggers at them.  “Mom, look out!” Kyle shouted, and he deflected three daggers that were practically seconds away from killing Trish, and she looked back and gasped.  “Kyle!” she shouted, as she saw a gust of wind heading for them, and she held him close to her as they both leapt out of the way.  They were impressed at Emmxett’s skill.  He was fighting Dexeres while keeping Trish and Kyle at bay.  “Mom, now!” Kyle shouted, and with that, he flung his Keyblade high into the air as it turned into his Keyblade Glider, and then Trish merged her Keyblade with his to turn it into a blaster cannon, and she aimed at Emmxett and fired off a beam of light and darkness, but it was to no avail, since Emmxett simply absorbed the attack and reflected it back at them, knocking them out instantly.

Dexeres saw what had just happened, and he tried to head over to his friends, but Emmxett prevented him from doing so.  “Ah, ah ah, not so fast.  Your battle is with me!” he said with a smirk, and Dexeres had no other option but to focus all his attention on the battle.  The two warriors stared down, an eerie calm following through the battlefield, and then Emmxett smiled and swung his Kuzuri back and forth.  “I have to say Dexeres, you’ve proven to be quite an interesting fellow.  Your friends are interesting as well.  All of them, with light and darkness in their hearts, and you all manage to work together so well.  I’m impressed!” he said, assuming his battle pose.  Dexeres also assumed his battle pose and pointed his Keyblade at Emmxett.  “That’s because we all fight for peace, for a world in which light and darkness coexist, with one complementing the other.  That is our goal, as Keyblade Wielders!  To preserve peace!”

With that, they both clashed blades again, and the sparks of steel flew through the battlefield, and the strength of both warriors was overwhelming.  “Heh, what a sentimental speech.  Let’s see if your actions speak louder than your words!” he said as they continued trading blows and clashing blades.  Both were evenly matched, and it seemed as though there would be no clear victor.  But Dexeres knew he had to give it his all, or otherwise the enemy was going to move one step ahead them.  As long as Emmxett was standing in their way, they wouldn’t be able to go deeper into the fortress.  “You will perish!” he shouted, summoning his powers of twilight to amplify his Keyblade’s strength, and in just a split second, he managed to find an opening in Emmxett’s defense, and he took the opportunity and delivered as powerful an attack as he could, and he sent a surprised Emmxett plummeting to the wall, a sickening thud echoing through the fortress as he fell.

As Dexeres headed towards Emmxett to deliver the final blow, Emmxett surprised him and unleashed a powerful stream of energy from his Kuzuri, sending Dexeres flying through the air and landing near his unconscious allies.  Emmxett slowly walked towards him and a big smile was on his face.  “Oh, I take back what I thought about you.  You aren’t good, you are excellent!  A perfect opponent!  But I believe our time in this battle is up.” he said, as he raised his arm, ready to finish off Dexeres with his Kuzuri.  But, all of a sudden, a flash of light that looked like lightning crackled through towards Emmxett’s hand, causing his Kuzuri to fall to the ground, and the surprised Emmxett looks around, trying to see who was it that stripped him of his weapon.  Then, a blinding flash of light shone through the fortress, and when the light died down, it was Dawn, taken hold by the power she had obtained in the Majestic Valley, who had attacked Emmxett!  “You are an anomaly in the balance of light and darkness…you must perish so that no more lives are taken.” Dawn said, in a tone that was not her own.  Emmxett remained speechless, trembling in fear for the first time in his life.  “T-the power of the Goddess!”

Before Emmxett could say anything else, Dawn had already taken the initiative and had begun her assault on him.  He could feel her Keyblade’s power, and it was an enormous amount that defied his expectations.  He was barely able to dodge her attacks, and in a quick moment, he was able to pick up his Kuzuri and he blocked her attacks, but then giant tentacles of light came out from behind her back, and they struck at Emmxett, holding him up high, arms and legs stretched apart, and then her eyes flashed a bright white, a chilling stare ushering Emmxett’s demise.  Dexeres was speechless, and he felt frozen in place.  He didn’t know what to do!  Would he interfere in the fight?  Or would he let her take care of things?  All he knew now is that Emmxett was in a deep pool of trouble.  Dawn then unleashed mirages of herself, each with a blade of light, and they surrounded Emmxett, forming the shape of a star, and when she swooped her hand down, all of her mirages attacked Emmxett, tearing him apart, and when the last mirage hit, Dawn came full circle and delivered a devastating blow with her Keyblade, channeling all her power in that final blow.

Emmxett, falling to the ground and bleeding out, looked at Dawn in shock, feeling disbelief in what had currently happened to him.  He looked over to Dexeres, who was just as surprised as he was, and then he withdrew his Kuzuri and laughed.  “This, this is much better than anticipated!  This is excellent!  Your powers still need some honing, but other than that, you are more than ready to play the part Master Xylek has for you.” he said, and with those words, he disappeared, retreating deeper into the fortress.  Perhaps that was the wisest thing he could have done, considering that her powers were overflowing.  Slowly, she turned around and started walking towards Dexeres, and eerie silence following her footsteps.  Dexeres didn’t even know if she was going to help him or attack him, for right now all he could feel is ultimate fear coursing through his body.

And he had all the right in the world to feel fear, because as he saw her walking over to him, he could notice that her face bore an eerily grim expression, and he stuttered, gripping his Keyblade tightly.  “W-who are you!?” he asked, ready to defend himself.  At that, she stopped for a moment, and then she tilted her head slightly.  “I am the Goddess of Twilight, the harbinger of balance, an entity created by the all powerful Kingdom Hearts, as a means to prevent those with malicious intent to reach it.” she declared.  Dexeres was awe struck, for never in his life did he imagine that he would meet someone with this much power.  Suddenly, she started to lose control, and she started to scream of pain, and Dexeres, concerned of what he was seeing, wanted to help her, but she then struck him with her Keyblade and sent him flying to the ground, causing him to fall unconscious.

Soon after, she saw Riku, Kairi, Valgard, Shira and Mickey make their way towards her, and she struggled to control her power.  She didn’t want to hurt them, but the closer they came, the more she felt on the edge of losing her sanity.  She didn’t want to hurt Riku, the man she loved, but the overwhelming sensation of power she was feeling was preventing her from regaining herself.  As Riku and the others arrived, Valgard stood in front of them, and Riku, shocked, glanced at Valgard.  “Did you know about this?” he asked.  Valgard nodded slowly.  “Yes.  The counsel new about her dormant powers, and that is why The Elder had decided to keep her in the fortress, so that she would never have to use them, but his methods were wrong.  Dawn needed to see the world, and all these years of seclusion had only festered the powers within her ever more greatly.  We need to stop her!” he said. Mickey, concerned, spread his arms out.  “But what about The Elder and the counsel?” he asked.  Riku shook his head.  “The Elder won’t be of any help to us.  He will never see eye to eye with us, so we’ll have to take matters into our own hands.” he answered grimly.  Shira then shouted.  “Guys, watch out!” she said, as Dawn completely lost control and let the power of the Goddess consume her.

Chapter 35: A Light That Never Dies

(Start Song Here)

Tension was rising high, as Riku, Kairi, Mickey, Valgard and Shira stood face to face with Dawn, who had been consumed by the power of the Goddess, and now she was about to fight against them.  “We have to make sure that we don’t hurt her, and that she doesn’t harm our friends!” Riku said, and at that, Kairi casted a protective barrier to protect their unconscious friends, for the battle that was about to go underway would be a grueling one.  “Balance must be restored!” Dawn said, rays of light ricocheting on the walls of the fortress, and then she disappeared then quickly reappeared behind Mickey, and she almost managed to strike him, but thanks to his sharp senses, he was able to barely dodge the attack.  Valgard leapt above Mickey and landed in front of him, and then he held his Keyblade firm, creating a shield of energy wide enough to protect them from Dawn’s attacks, at least for a few moments.  Shira tried to disorient Dawn by catching her attention, and just as she had hoped, Dawn indeed turned around, focusing her attention on Shira.

“Nothing shall stand in my way!” Dawn shouted, as her Keyblade unleashed a stream of energy that almost pulverized Shira, but she was able to block the attack just barely.  Shira stood there, shocked and amazed by such bestial power.  “No wonder The Elder kept her secluded from the worlds all these years…” she thought to herself, as she started to charge towards Dawn, both of them clashing blades, trying to outmatch each other.  With each strike, Shira could feel the immense power flowing from Dawn, and she was dazzled, afraid and awe struck all at once.  Dawn wasted no time and she quickly struck the ground, causing Shira to fall down, leaving her unconscious.  As Dawn walked toward her and was about to give the final blow, she felt something hit her back.

When she turned around, it was Kairi who stood on a pillar, having shot a Holy spell.  Dawn’s eyes remained unflinching and grim, now dissipating herself and rematerializing right in front of Kairi, taking her by surprise.  “You dare to oppose me!?” Dawn asked, giving out a harsh laugh, holding Kairi by the throat.  Below, Riku saw what was happening, and he tried heading over to help Kairi, but Dawn snapped her fingers and caused a huge pile of debris to fall on top of him, leaving Mickey and Valgard the only ones standing.  “Valgard, we gotta rescue Kairi, Dawn’s gonna kill her!” Mickey said in worried tone.  Valgard shook his head and clenched his fists.  “Follow my lead!” he said, and Mickey, trusting in Valgard’s words, did as he was told.  And so they began to charge their power, and they began speaking telepathically.

“We cannot move or else Dawn will also knock us out.” Valgard said to Mickey, and the small king nodded in agreement.  “Then what can we do?” he asked.  Valgard looked to his surroundings and then he closed his eyes.  “Focus all of your power on this next attack we shall make.  It will be powerful enough to make Dawn fall unconscious without risking her to any further harm.  We only have one shot at this, so we need to make this count.” he said carefully.  After hearing Valgard’s words, Mickey agreed to the plan.  “Alright, let’s do this!” he said, and with that, they continued charging their power.  As their power grew, Dawn noticed them, and she threw Kairi aside and now focused her attention on them.  “You will not stop me!  Light shall be restored to the worlds, and you shall not impede me of my goal!”  she said, as she threw beams of light at them.  But they did not flinch.  Now they were sitting ducks.  If she got any closer, they wouldn’t be able to make it.  “Valgard, we have to move!” Mickey said. Valgard shook his head in disagreement.  “No, we need to keep our focus on our attack, or we won’t be able to stop her!” he said with iron clad determination.

Mickey knew that Valgard wasn’t going to back down, and neither was he, but he also had to keep in mind the risks they were taking.  They would lose their lives if they failed this attack.  So they had to make sure that they would not fail.  And so, with the thoughts of his friends with him, Mickey closed his eyes as he and Valgard kept charging their attack.  Dawn was about to strike them, but then Riku jumped and got in the way, spreading his arms out wide.  “Stop!” Riku said, looking at Dawn with blazing eyes.  He wanted to see if he could try to talk some sense into Dawn, to see if he could revert her to her normal self.  “It’s me, Riku!  Please don’t do this!  We aren’t the enemy here!  You have to snap out of this!  We have to stop the enemy, or else the worlds will fall into darkness!” he said.  But Dawn quickly attacked Riku and threw him aside, again focusing her attention on Valgard and Mickey. “Just…a little…more!” Valgard said, feeling the power of their attack about to reach its peak.  Then, in a split second, Dawn rushed towards them, ready to deliver the final blow.  It was now or never, Mickey thought to himself.

(End Song Here)

Everything now seemed to move in slow motion, as if time itself was on the verge of stopping.  Valgard knew.  He knew that his time had now come.  “This is goodbye…my friend.” he said, as he pushed Mickey aside and received the fatal final blow, as Dawn’s Keyblade pierced through his body.  Riku, not being able to stand, was only able to feel shock and horror as he saw what was happening.  “Nooo!” Riku shouted, shedding tears.  As Dawn held Valgard high with her Keyblade, he simply smiled, blood slowly dripping from his lips.  “I always admired you Dawn…I always knew you would be capable of great things.” he said as he gently put his hand on her shoulder, thus using all the power he and Mickey had charged, making Dawn return to normal. At first she struggled and tried fighting back, but thankfully she reverted to normal.  When she realized what she had done, a face of shock and guilt came across her face.

“W-what have I done!?” Dawn asked, letting go of her Keyblade and making it dematerialize, as she held Valgard close to her, placing his head on her lap.  Kairi, who had come to, cast Curaga on Riku and Shira, and they all rushed to Valgard’s side.  Mickey, who knelt beside him, held his hand.  “Gosh Valgard…y-you didn’t have to do that!  You couldn’t throw your life away just like that!” he said, tears rolling down.  Valgard, who was weakening by the minute, saw all of his friends, standing beside him, and he smiled of relief.  “You are all alive…good.  That is good indeed.” he said, as he coughed up blood.  Dawn, who was crying, didn’t know what to say, and at that Valgard wiped off her tears and smiled.  “Please, shed no tears for a sinful man.”  he said, as he felt his life being drained for his body.  He knew that it was almost his time to depart.  With that, he wanted to say his final words.  He needed to let out his true feelings.

“Do not cry Dawn.” he said, smiling and slowly closing his eyes.  “Ever since we were children, I knew you would achieve a great power, a great destiny.  I knew that you were special from the start.  The Elder knew that too, and that is why he decided to keep you in our fortress.  He knew that one day you would achieve a great power, but he feared that you would not be able to control it.  As we grew older, the counsel and I tried to change his mind, but he remained firm in his convictions, believing his methods to be the only way.  I knew in my heart that what he had done was wrong, and yet I did not have the heart to stand up to him on my own.  Maybe it was because I did not want you to experience any suffering…or maybe…maybe it was because I did not want you to leave.” he said, tears slowly rolling down his eyes.  Everyone remained silent and listened to the words he had to say.  “W-what do you mean?” Dawn asked, her voice still shaky from the tears she was shedding.  Valgard paused for a moment and inhaled deeply then exhaled.  “Yes Dawn…I had fallen in love with you.  My heart had been taken by your beauty, your kindness, your warm smile, your gentle light.” he said as he smiled.

“As the years passed by, I fell ever more in love with you.  Your presence made me calm, your company made me feel healthy when I would come home from a weary day, your words of comfort always gave me the strength to keep going.  I admired your resolve, your confidence, your courage, and I admired your desire for the greater good.  That is why I knew that one day you would be curious about the outside world.” he said, his heartbeat slowly stopping.  “When you became curious of the outside world, The Elder would not grant you your wish.  It pained me to see you so sad, and I would see you crying every night before going to your room.  Then that is when your powers began to evolve.  Over time, you were able to transfer your mental state to a person’s mind, and you could also see what was happening in other worlds.  That is when you had discovered Riku.  As the days passed, you would meet with me in secret and tell me more about the many things you had seen, and of all the perils he and the Keyblade Wielders had gone through.  You were very intrigued about their well being and their adventures.”

“Then, when Dark Orion surfaced, I had noticed that you had grown deep feelings of affection for Riku.  It broke my heart.  It made me feel sad and devastated.  Now I knew that I could never have you.  But rather than hold hate or resentment for you and Riku, I gladly supported you.  Because I saw how you smiled at the mention of his name, and the way you would talk about him.  I knew that you had finally found happiness, and I did not have any right to stop you.  And even if I did, it would have been heartless of me.  And so when you received the powers of the Keyblade, I knew that your time to leave the fortress was near.  I knew you wanted to discover new worlds, and that is why I wanted to help you.  Heh, I guess that in the end, I wanted to do this for such a selfish reason, just so you could look up to me as a hero.” he said, gazing into Dawn’s eyes, doing his best to keep smiling.  After everything that had happened, he wanted to depart with a smile on his face.

He coughed up blood and held Dawn’s hands tightly, and she held his. She felt shocked at everything she had heard, and she didn’t know what to say.  Valgard looked at Riku and he nodded.  “Please…take care of her.  I have seen the power your love for her has.  Never let her fall to darkness.  Please watch over her and love her, and make sure she sees everything the worlds have to offer, do what I could not.” he said, and Riku knelt down, with tears in his eyes.  “I will.  I promise you Valgard.” At that, Valgard smiled of relief, and he looked at Shira and bowed his head to her.  “I am honored to have fought by your side Shira.” he said, and that, Shira nodded and cried, speechless and unable to say anything.  With his final breath near, he slowly closed his eyes.  “My friends, even though our time knowing each other was short, I am honored and proud to have fought alongside you.  You are all the true protectors of the light.”

With his final breath at hand, Dawn hugged Valgard tightly and kissed his forehead.  “My hero.” she said gently.  At that, Valgard’s eyes filled with tears, and he smiled and felt at peace, and he closed his eyes, and he slowly faded away, bright shards of light glittering, flowing up to the sky as his body disappeared.  His Keyblade was all that remained, and Dawn cried, hugging Riku tightly.  Everyone remained silent, for they had witnessed the sacrifice of a good man, a man who had fought not just for them, but for Dawn.  A long, grim silence loomed, as they had lost not just a brave comrade, but a brother in arms.  Soon after, Kairi and Shira went to tend to the others, bringing them back to consciossness and informing them of what had happened.  As the others were being healed, Dawn looked at Riku, and then looking at her hands. “It’s all my fault…” she said grimly.  Riku shook his head.  “Don’t blame this on yourself, you weren’t the cause of this.  You have to be strong.  We have to keep on going.  That’s what Valgard would have wanted.” he said, looking at her with loving eyes.  At that, Dawn picked up Valgard’s Keyblade and held it tightly, and she looked onwards towards the dark fortress, fiery determination in her eyes.  “You’ll always be with me Valgard.  Because your light is in my heart, and it is a light that will never die.  Now, let us finish what we started.” she said.

Chapter 36: Jexana’s Rage

After taking a brief rest, our heroes are now ready to continue their journey into the fortress of the enemy.  They had all recovered their strength, and now they were ready for whatever might stand in their way.  Xion then stood in front of everyone and looked at them with a worried face.  “Everyone, I have terrible news…the one who’s behind all of this…the one who’s causing so much chaos here is Xylek…” she said, looking at her friends.  At that, Riku and the others stood there, shocked and in disbelief.  “What?  How is that possible!?”  Riku asked, feeling as if he had been punched in the gut.  Dexeres shook his head and looked at his friends grimly.  “Yes, it’s just as you’ve heard, he’s alive, but he didn’t tell us how, all we know is that he’s the one spearheading this entire disturbance in the worlds, and he led me, Vanitas and Xion here.  We knew it was a trap, but we had to come free Sora, Donald and Goofy.  We had to…” he said, clenching his fists.  Trish and Kyle looked at each other with great unease at the news, for it seemed now things were growing ever more dire.

Shira looked at them and looked upwards towards the fortress that loomed above them eerily.  “Everyone, we need to focus, right now we are in the heart of the storm.  We can’t back down now, because the worlds are depending on us to keep them safe!  We will deal with this Xylek and his cohorts as we go.  Now come on!” she said, as she ran deeper into the fortress.  With that, everyone nodded in unison and followed Shira, as they made their way through the maze-like corridors of the fortress, seeking out where Sora, Donald and Goofy were being held captive, hoping to make it to them in time before something of dire consequence happened.  As they made their way upwards, they felt a strong source of power nearby, a presence that indicated someone was watching them.  It wasn’t until they headed up ahead that they saw…

“Jexana!” Trish shouted, clenching her fists and gripping her Keyblade tightly, as Jexana sat on top of a pillar, looking down on the Keyblade Wielders.  She had a big smile on her face, and Ventus was by her side, his eyes lifeless and empty.  Vanitas looked up at Jexana and he frowned, turning his attention to Trish.  “So this is the woman who possessed Ventus, right?  Don’t worry, I’ll be sure to take care of her.” he said, but Trish stopped him before he could do anything else.  “No…this is something only Kyle and I can do.  The rest of you go ahead.  Sora, Donald and Goofy need to be saved, and we can’t all stay here, so go!  Kyle and I will handle this!” she said with determined eyes.  Kyle nodded in agreement and smiled.  “That’s right!  We’ll take care of this, so go!” he said, urging the Keyblade Wielders to keep going forward.

Seeing their determination, and knowing that whatever he said wouldn’t change their decision, Vanitas looked to the others and then looked back at Trish and Kyle and he sighed.  “Good luck.  Bring knucklehead back to us, you hear?” he said with a smirk, and Trish and Kyle nodded in agreement while smiling.  And so, the Keyblade Wielders went deeper into the fortress, leaving Trish and Kyle alone with Jexana and Ventus.  Jexana simply swung her legs as she stayed put on the pillar, rubbing her fingers on her lips, and then she stood up and leaped down to the ground, landing gracefully, followed by Ventus, who landed right beside her.  “It seems you’ve come to settle the score, correct?” Jexana said, clearly trying to get on Trish’s nerves.  Kyle waved his arm defensively and glared at Jexana.  “Your going to give my Dad back, you hear me!?  Your not gonna keep using him as your puppet!” he said with determination.  Jexana gave out a harsh laugh and put her hands on her hips.  “You are such a confused child.  You actually think Ventus will ever come back to you two?  You are both misguided.  You see, he belongs to me now, and he will remain mine for all eternity!” she said.

(Start Song Here)

As Trish and Jexana glared at each other, Jexana raised her hand and smiled. “My dear Ventus.  Take care of them for me, will you?” she asked in a seductive tone.  Ventus nodded and summoned his Keyblade and prepared for battle.  “As you command Jexana my love…” he said with a lifeless and somber tone.  Trish felt stung when he heard Ventus say Jexana was his true love.  Trish knew that he was under her spell, but it still hurt hearing Ventus say those words.  But she shook off her feelings, for right now she had to focus on freeing Ventus from the spell.  She knew that she had to break the spell, or else she’d lose him forever.  And with that, she began to block Ventus’ attacks, as he charged at them swiftly and with precise skill.  He also lunged forward to Kyle, but he was able to dodge the attack, and then he blocked his attacks as well.  They didn’t want to hurt Ventus, but they coulnd’t just block forever.  Jexana on the other hand, leaned her back against the wall and she looked relaxed, clearly enjoying the torture that Trish and Kyle were going through.  “These two won’t make it out alive.  Of that much I’m certain.” she said to herself with an amused smile.

Minutes dragged on as the battle continued, and then the minutes stretched longer, and Trish and Kyle were starting to get tired, while Ventus remained unflinching.  Kyle then began to formulate a plan in his mind.  “There has to be some way we can keep Dad pinned down long enough for me and Mom to take care of Jexana…but the thing is how can we do that?” he thought to himself, looking at his surroundings and trying to figure out what to do.  He looked to Trish, who was holding her ground, and then he focused again on blocking Ventus’ attacks, and when he looked up at the pillars, he had an idea.  He quickly flung the Keyblade to the ground so that Ventus would jump back, and the moment he did, Kyle immediately took advantage of the momentary pause to the battle and then looked at Trish.  “What are you doing Kyle!?” Trish asked, wondering what he was up to.

“Mom, follow my lead!” he shouted, and Trish nodded without hesitation, and the two started to run on the walls.  Clearly, Ventus could go after only one of them, so they had a chance of an element of surprise.  But no such luck, as Ventus simply charged his energy and enveloped himself in a sphere of flame, shooting out flame projectiles that aimed for both Kyle and Trish.  With no other option, the duo dodged and blocked all the fire projectiles, and then Trish looked over to Kyle and beared a: “Well, what now?” expression.  Kyle immediately thought about what to do next, and then he signaled Trish to follow his lead anew.  They both leapt into the air and seemingly vanished, causing Jexana, who was laid back and enjoying their suffering, to stand up and have a concerned face.  “What in the world are they up to…?” she asked to herself, starting to get mad.

After a few seconds, only lightning fast slashes of light were seen, and they were forming a circle that surrounded Ventus, and when the circle finished formation, Kyle and Trish swooped down from the air and made an X, causing the slashes of light to form a barrier of light, from which Ventus could not escape from.  Ventus tried to strike his way out of the barrier, but the barrier paralyzed him, causing him to fall down to the ground, immobile and unable to fight.  At that, Jexana gritted her teeth and cracked her knuckles.  “So…you want to play that way, huh?” Jexana asked, clearly irritated.  Kyle smiled and looked at Trish who was also smiling.  “Now, we settle this once and for all!” Kyle shouted, as he and Trish both headed towards Jexana.  “You will not defeat us!” Trish said, charging forward.  Jexana summoned dark daggers and started throwing them towards Trish and Kyle.  Now the battle was infensifying, for victory for our heroes would mean Ventus’ freedom, and so the stakes were high, meaning that Trish and Kyle could not lose!  They needed to free Ventus from Jexana’s spell, no matter the cost, and no matter what it took.

“Die you incompetent fools!” Jexana shouted in anger as she made a hail of dark daggers rain on Trish and Kyle.  Luckily, the duo was able to dodge and block the daggers with stunning finesse and grace, leaving Jexana baffled.  “This will teach you to mess with us!” Trish shouted, as she shot a beam of light straight towards Jexana’s chest, but Jexana was barely able to block it, instead injuring her hand in the process.  “Ahhh!” she screamed in pain, her eyes now full of anger and rage.  “That’s it, you’ve crossed the line!” Jexana shouted as her eyes turned a bright purple and dark purple electricity crackled around Trish and Kyle, and Jexana entered the electric circle.  “You won’t escape now…” she said, her power flowing through her hands.  Trish glared at Jexana and charged at her, attacking her with swift and balanced strikes, while Kyle came from the right, trying to break Jexana’s defenses.  “Your not gonna keep this up any longer!” Kyle said, confident that Jexana would eventually get tired.  “That’s right, your going down now!” Trish said while smirking, continuing her assault.  They clearly had her pinned now.

Eventually, as the minutes wore on, Jexana knew she had to make things more complicated for her opponents, and so she stood back and then from the air, she summoned two giant dark snakes, and she levitated above them and cast a forcefield around her so that she wouldn’t be harmed.  When she closed her eyes, she possessed full control of the snakes, making them slide their way through the ground and towards Trish and Kyle.  “What now!?” Kyle asked, taking a deep breath before jumping back.  Trish looked around to see if there was anything they could use to their advantage, but the electrical circle that Jexana made would prevent them from moving further out.  “We’ll just have to fight until our last breath!” Trish declared, charging towards one of the dark serpents and climbing up its head and striking it, giving her all in the battle.

Kyle nodded and swung his Keyblade, clenching his fists in determination.  “Alright!” he shouted, and they charged forward, doing their best to impale the dark snakes as quickly as they could.  As they kept struggling, Jexana only got angrier, and she amplified her powers as darkness seeped from her body, allowing her to creat a dark sphere which gave more power to the dark snakes.  “Now my children, finish off these fools!” she said, as she swooped both of her hands down, allowing the snakes to grow bigger and become stronger, their fangs growing deadly sharp.  They swung their tails at Trish and Kyle and slammed them to the wall, and then they pounded them on the ground, leaving them unconscious and unable to fight.  At that, Jexana smirked and landed gently to the ground, dissolving her dark snakes into thin air, and she sighed of relief.

(End Song Here)

She walked over to them and saw their unconscious bodies and she kicked Trish and Kyle, utterly enjoying herself.  “I would gladly finish you off right now you fools…but Master Xylek has special plans, so until those plans are complete, I have to leave you two miserable wretches alive…” she said, glancing over her shoulder and looking at Ventus’ prison of light.  Instead of being frustrated, she simply smiled.  “They are both unconscious, so that prison of light should disappear in three, two, one.” she said, counting with her fingers as the prison of light faded away.  Ventus remained lifeless as ever, and he rushed over to Jexana’s side.  “I’m sorry, I failed you Jexana.” he said grimly.  She simply smiled and kissed him in the lips and touched his face, her eyes full of pleasure and contentment.  “There’s no need to apologize my dear Ventus.  Our work is done here.  Now come, we must go up to take care of our other guests.” she said with a smirk, and with that, she walked deeper into the fortress, and Ventus followed behind.  Trish and Kyle on the other hand, were left unconscious and battered.  Clearly this battle had not gone the way they had hoped.

------------------------------------------------------------

Trish and Kyle fought valiantly to free Ventus, but their efforts amounted to nothing, as Jexana defeated them mercilessly.  Now, our heroes are two allies short.  Will they be able to find Sora, Donald and Goofy?  Is time running out for them?  Find out in Chapter 37: “An Unrelenting Battle.”

Chapter 37: An Unrelenting Battle

(Start Song Here)

As the Keyblade Wielders made their way up the fortress, they felt an ominous darkness looming ever more deadly.  Xion looked on uneasily, for she couldn't help but think something of dire consequence was about to happen.  Dexeres, on the other hand, felt as if something bad had happened, and for a moment he glanced over his shoulder, Trish and Kyle coming into his mind.  "I hope they are safe." He whispered to himself, and with that he continued on his way, catching up to the others. For a few seconds more they kept going, until they eventually stopped at what seemed to be a courtyard.  The gates behind them closed, and a barrier was placed above and beside them.  They knew that whatever this was, they weren't going to escape from it.  As everyone kept looking to either side, Dawn gasped and pointed upwards. "Everyone, look!" she shouted, and with that, everyone did so, their faces now bearing a shocked expression.  Right now, they couldn’t believe what they were seeing.  “It can’t be…” Riku said silently.

"Sora, Donald, Goofy!" Kairi shouted, as she was horrified by the sight she was seeing.  Sora, Donald and Goofy were hanging from the top of the gate in front of them, tied to the brim with chains. Donald and Goofy were unconscious, and Sora was barely awake, his face bruised and battered and his body torn from torture and darkness.  "R-run..." Sora mouthed out, but they didn't hear him.  A few seconds later, Xylek appeared in front of the Keyblade Wielders, looking as calm and collected as usual.  Everyone prepared for battle, summoning their Keyblades and keeping caution. Xylek walked down the set of stairs that were before the gate, and then he slowly clapped his hands. "Excellent.  All of you are here. Everything has gone according to plan.”  he said mockingly, smirking and folding his arms.

Kairi pointed her Keyblade angrily at Xylek and she clenched her fists and gritted her teeth.  "Let Sora, Donald and Goofy go!  You've kept them long enough!" she demanded, making her statement clear.  Xylek laughed and he shook his head. "Silly girl, do you honestly think I'm going to give them back to you that easily?  Unfortunately, that isn't the case, for I still require their use. Don't worry, I'll only keep them with me for a while longer." he said, taunting the Keyblade Wielders.  Dawn shook her head and spread her arms out wide.  "Enough of this!  Stop all this unnecessary chaos and death!  There is no need for you to take things to such drastic levels!" she said, hoping to get in Xylek's good graces.  Xylek simply started laughing, rolling his eyes over and then looking upwards to Sora, Donald and Goofy.

“There is no need to get so desperate.  I am merely standing in your presence, nothing more.” Xylek said, as he walked towards the center of the courtyard, where all the Keyblade Wielders were ready to strike.  They had their chance to take him down, but something was preventing them from doing so.  They had the fear that the slightest thing they would attempt to do would only bring danger to Sora, Donald and Goofy, so they uneasily decided to stay put.  Mickey shook his head and glared at Xylek.  “Why do you have to do this!?  You put the worlds in danger and you use people as your tools! What is it that you want so badly that requires you to do all of this!?” he shouted, feeling baffled by Xylek’s seemingly calm fortitude.  At that, Xylek simply smirked and walked over towards the other side of the courtyard.  “If you want your answer so badly, then I’ll let you in on a small amount of information.  You see, the worlds are filled with energy, life and power, and as you know, these worlds are all but a small fracture of the ever expanding universe that is beyond our comprehension.  That is my ambition.” he said.

“What do you mean by that?” Shira asked, glaring at Xylek.  A few seconds of silence followed, and then Xylek walked over to the gate and smirked and summoned a portal of darkness.  “I’ll leave it to your imagination.” he said, as he disappeared into the portal and it closed behind him.  Just when the Keyblade Wielders thought that nothing would happen, a giant circle formed above them, and soon the circle started to emanate strange emblems of a bright purple color, and in the center of the circle, an insignia that was blazing in fire took the form of Phoenix wings.  Now the Keyblade Wielders knew they were in for some serious trouble.  As the courtyard grew darker, Kairi looked over to Sora, Donald and Goofy, and then her eyes widened open, as she saw something that she could not believe.  As the circle above them grew more powerful, it started to drain the life out of Sora, Donald and Goofy, their life force being siphoned to the circle, until a giant Unborn rose from the ground, clad in dark armor and with multiple arms stretching out of its body, and it was using the essence of Sora, Donald and Goofy to fuel its power.

Shira shook her head and gritted her teeth.  “What a dirty trick…using Sora, Donald and Goofy’s life energy to create that monster…” she said angrily.  Mickey looked over to Shira and tilted his head.  “Can’t we just defeat the Unborn?” he asked.  Vanitas shook his head and glared at the formidable foe standing before them.  “It’s not that simple…if we kill this thing, we’ll risk killing Sora, Donald and Goofy too.” he said grimly.  Everyone looked in shock, realizing now why Xylek was smiling so much.  “No…that can’t be!  There has to be some way that we can save them, there has to!” Kairi said, in tears, now feeling utter despair at their current predicament.  Dexeres gripped his Keyblade tightly and looked down to the floor, feeling helpless and weak.  “Our friends are in danger…and yet there’s nothing we can do to save them…” he thought to himself, and then he heard Riku shouting: “Look out!”

(End Song Here)

(Start Song Here)

When he looked up, the armored Unborn was inches away from slamming him into the ground, but luckily, he was able to doge the attack quickly enough, and then everyone assumed their battle positions.  Dexeres looked at everyone’s faces, as they were filled with doubt and uncertainty, losing hope with each passing second.  Dexeres then stood front and center, raising his Keyblade and closing his eyes.  “We need to save Sora, Donald and Goofy.  We have to find a way to do so!  We need to save them, or this thing will drain their life completely!  We’ll find a way to defeat it, we have to!” he shouted, and the others nodded in agreement, charging towards the armored Unborn.  But no sooner that they had approached their foe, it summoned a wave of darkness that flung them to all sides.  Clearly this was a battle that would test their limits.

Mickey weaved and dodged through the dark whirlpools the armored Unborn was creating, and then he cast his Pearl spell to prevent any more dark whirlpools from forming.  Directly after, Shira leapt over Mickey and started to use her Keyblade as a gun, taking down the numerous Unborn that were seeping out of the dark whirlpools, giving it her all to the battle.  Vanitas summoned his Unversed to counter the Unborn that had spawned, and they kept them distracted as Vanitas quickly dashed towards the armored Unborn, and he was able to strike at the armor with his Triple Firaga spell.  He then realized that the armored Unborn weakened slightly.  “Guys, we need to strike at the armor!  It’ll weaken the armored Unborn!” he shouted, loud enough for everyone to hear.  At that, Riku and Dawn nodded, and they focused their powers and stood back to back, raising their Keyblades and shooting beams of light and darkness, respectively, to break the armor.  But the more they tried attacking the armor, the more the Unborn became aware of its prey.  “It’s adapting to our attacks!  Even if we do manage to break the armor, it’ll still be strong enough to defeat us!” Kairi said.

With this said, things were growing ever more complicated for the Keyblade Wielders.  But they had no time to think, for their foe was restless and cunning, and attacking them relentlessly.  Xion dodged large dark spikes that headed towards her, and then she managed to climb on one of the dark spikes and run along it, leaping forward and striking the armored Unborn’s helm.  She then proceeded to backflip to the ground, dodging the dark waves heading towards her, as she used Reversal to quickly and effortlessly make her way to the armorned Unborn.  So far, her attacks were proving to be quite effective.  Dexeres stood firm, keeping the Unborn at bay as Kairi started to cast spells to break the armored Unborn’s armor.  She started to charge her Holy spell, putting all her heart and soul into it.  “This is for Sora, Donald and Goofy.  They will be saved!” she said to herself, and then she raised her Keyblade high, pointing it to the sky, as a sphere of light formed on top of her, swirls and strands of light coalescing to make the sphere bigger, and then Dexeres summoned Nobodies to make a circle so they could protect Kairi, as she was fueling her Holy spell.

“Holy!” she shouted, and the sphere of light dashed at lightning speed through the dark waves and whirlpools, and it struck at the center of the armored Unborn, crackling his armor to the point of shattering, and it delivered a piercing, mind numbing growl of pain, as the spell worked its effect.  But as the armored Unborn was agonizing, Sora, Donald and Goofy were also grunting and feeling the same pain.  “No…its still not enough!  It’s too risky, I don’t want to hurt them!” Kairi said, clenching her fists.  As everyone fended off the waves of Unborn that increasingly became stronger, Shira looked at the armored Unborn and noticed thin, chain-like binds that connected the armored Unborn to Sora, Donald and Goofy.  “The chains must be severed…” she said to herself, knowing what she had to do.  And so, she started running, dashing and dodging the dark whirlpools and waves, picking up the pace drastically.

Xion noticed Shira running through the courtyard, and she wanted to go help her, but too many Unborn stood in her way, and so all she could do was watch from the corner of her eyes.  Shira kept running, almost as if she was going to tackle the armored Unborn, and then, when she was a few feet of distance from it, she jumped high into the air and landed on the nape of its neck, and she raised her arm and stabbed the Keyblade into the nape, severing the chains that binded the armored Unborn with Sora, Donald and Goofy.  As she did so, Sora, Donald and Goofy were freed from their chains, and they fell to the ground, unconscious.  Kairi and the others quickly went to their aid and carried them and put them to the far side of the courtyard.  When they turned around, they saw Shira mounted on top of the armored Unborn, and they saw that she’d been impaled by sharp blades the armored Unborn had summoned from its body.

Dawn saw the horrifying sight, and she ran towards Shira, desperate to help her, and she ran through the courtyard, determined to make it to Shira in time, but Shira simply smiled, as she was bleeding through her mouth, and she mouthed the words: “Protect the light.” and with that, she implanted a Firaga bomb into the nape of the armored Unborn’s neck, and as she closed her eyes, the blinding explosion of light enveloped the armored Unborn, finally defeating it and putting an end to its rampage. As the light died down, the circle above them disappeared, and Dawn fell to her knees, her eyes opened wide of shock, and then she screamed of sorrow. She had just lost another friend.  Riku quickly came to her and hugged her tight, holding her close and comforting her.  Everyone remained speechless and full of sorrow.  How many more of their friends would have to pay the price for saving the worlds?  How many more would have to fall to the darkness?  What was the true price to pay for peace?  Right now, those questions drifted in the air, lifeless and empty as the courtyard that surrounded them.  First Valgard, and now Shira…how many more would have to fall?

Chapter 38: The Path That Must Be Tread

(Start Song Here)

Things were now getting worse.  Much, much worse.  The Keyblade Wielders had just lost another ally, and the enemy seemed to be a step ahead of them.  Xylek clearly had all of this planned out, but they couldn’t believe that everything was happening so fast.  They all stayed in the courtyard for a while, healing up their wounds and recovering their strength, and Riku and Kairi were tending to Sora, Donald and Goofy, who had come back to consciousness, but were deeply wounded.  Kairi was doing her best to hold back her tears, and as she healed Sora, he smiled at her with his goofy smile, even though he had gone through endless amounts of pain.  “Come on, no need to be sad Kairi, we’re together again!” he said as he smiled, and then he coughed, feeling his inner wounds hurting.  Kairi touched his face and kissed his lips lovingly and she smiled, a tear rolling down her face.  “Just shut up and let me finish fixing you up.” she said with a smile. As they looked into each other’s eyes, they felt their love grow stronger in the midst of all this chaotic darkness that surrounded them.

Riku healed Donald and Goofy and he sighed of relief.  “Thank goodness you guys are alive.  We had been worried about you!” he said, hugging them.  Donald struggled and pulled away from he hug. “Ow, Riku, my shoulder hurts!  I’m not ready for hugging yet!” he squawked, and Goofy rubbed his head.  “Gwarsh, that Xylek and his fellers really got us good!  But don’t worry, they never broke us!” he said confidently.  Kairi looked over to them with a concerned face.  “What did they do to you?” she asked, as Sora sat up and looked over to Donald and Goofy and Riku.  “Well, they tortured us and demanded us to cooperate with them to complete their big plan, but we resisted every time!” Donald huffed, still rubbing his shoulder.  Goofy and Sora nodded in agreement silently.

Suddenly, Xion came over from the other side of the courtyard and she looked at them.  “Guys, come on, we have to get up.” she said, and with that, Sora, Donald, Goofy, Riku and Kairi walked over to the others, who were about to proceed deeper into the fortress.  Dawn stood in front of them all, looking at the staircase leading to the gate, and then she looked behind and saw Riku and the others looking at her.  She turned around and she looked at each and every one of them in the eyes.  “Riku my love, and my dear friends…we need to keep on going.  We need to stop Xylek before his ambitions cloud all worlds in endless chaos.” she said, putting her hand to her chest, feeling her heartbeat become stronger, as her heart was filled with emotions over everything that had been happening up til now.

Mickey nodded in agreement and he stood beside Dawn.  “Gosh, she’s right fellas, we have to give it our all!  The worlds are counting on us to keep them safe, and we can’t let them down!  We’ve been through countless ordeals and battles together, and it’s the experiences we share in those battles and the bonds we form over our journeys is what makes us stronger!  We have to fight, not just for the worlds, but for all our loved ones, and for the memory of those fallen in battle!  It’s our duty as Keyblade Wielders to fight for peace!  We have to keep going forward and never back down!” he said confidently, looking at Dawn and nodding.  Dexeres stood beside them and nodded.  “We may go through countless trials and tribulations, but the strength our hearts carry is what helps us go through them.  The memories of friends, family and loved ones, the motivation to keep us going, our hearts will always lead us to the light, and we will always keep the balance.” he said, gripping his Keyblade tightly and taking a deep breath.

Vanitas nodded as he looked upwards towards the fortress, and he narrowed his eyes, and then he relaxed his muscles and looked at everyone.  “These guys are right.  Right now we may be commiting a suicide mission, but if it’s for saving the worlds, it’s worth doing.  If I have to fall in combat, I’m glad it’s with you idiots.  I don’t think that I’d have it any other way.” he said as he smirked, crossing his arms and shaking his head.  Xion put her hand to her chest and she looked down, and then she looked up with a determined look on her face.  “We must fight.  We have to carry on where our friends perished.  We need to fight for Roxas, Terra, Aqua, for everyone!  We can’t let our hopes be burned down because of Xylek and his ambitions!  We need to do this, we must complete our task for the good of everyone, and for the memory of those who sacrificed themselves for the greater good!” she said, a tear rolling down her cheek as she thought of Roxas.  She clenched her fist and wiped off her tears, determined to see this through.  She knew that she had to do this.  She had faith in her heart that she’d be able to see Roxas again.  Even if the hope was faint, she knew it was still there.

Everyone was ready to defend the worlds, no matter the cost.  They were all ready and committed to lay their lives on the line for the protection of everyone and everything.  Sora, Donald and Goofy stood firm, despite their heavy wounds and weakened composures.  They were able to stand because of Kairi and Riku’s Curaga spells, but their wounds were still strong.  “I’m gonna give that Xylek a piece of my mind!  Who does he think he is, doing all of this!? Waaak!” he squawked furiously, as his feathers ruffled in anger.  Goofy clapped his hands together and he rubbed his head.  “Gwarsh fellas, we’re in this together, and no matter what happens, we’ll have each other’s backs, of that much you can be sure, a-hyuck!” he said cheerfully, nodding in determination. Sora struggled to stay on his feet a bit, still feeling the effects of his wounds, but then he stood firm, with a fiery look of confidence in his eyes.

“Guys, Xylek wants to make a mess out of everything.  He’s not even the least bit worried about the consequences of his actions.  All he cares about is seeing his ambition through.  And he doesn’t care if he takes life after life after life.  He wanted to force me, Donald and Goofy to cooperate with him, but we never gave in.  But even without our cooperation, he still has his plans set in motion.  We’ll need to stop him and his goons with everything we’ve got!” Sora said, raising his fist in the air and narrowing his eyes.  Riku, who had gone back to where Trish and Kyle had been fighting Jexana, came running in a rush, a look of concern on his face.  “Guys, Trish and Kyle…they aren’t here…they disappeared!” he exclaimed.  Immediately, everyone’s faces turned grim, for now they had possibly lost two more friends.  “This is bad…” Kairi said, now looking anxious.

At that moment, they heard Jexana laughing in the distance, and they all summoned their Keyblades, ready to battle.  Her laughs were echoing closer, and the Keyblade Wielders gathered in a circle, ready to take on Jexana and anyone else that would come from all sides.  Just when they thought Jexana was going to appear before them, a flood of Unborn poured down from the top of the walls of the courtyard, scattering to the ground and surrounding our heroes, literally leaving only a small spot, which was where the Keyblade Wielders were standing.  Now things were taking a turn for the worse.  “Oh great, just what we needed.  More of these things!” Vanitas said in an exhausted tone.  “You know, when I was one of the bad guys, things were a whole lot easier.” he said, rolling his eyes.  Dexeres smirked and laughed.  “So, you mean you want to be the villain again?” he asked, glancing over at Vanitas.  At that, Vanitas laughed and shook his head. “Nah, I’ve outgrown being the villain.  Besides, I think being a handsome, brooding, dark hero has its own perks.” he said, shrugging and relaxing his muscles as he swung his Keyblade.

And so, the Unborn made their move, overwhelming our heroes from all sides.  Sora, Donald and Goofy went headfirst into the swarms of Unborn, taking them out swiftly and with fiery determination.  Wounded or not, they were just as determined to fight as everyone else.  Donald cast a Magnega spell to pull in the surrounding Unborn, and then Goofy leapt up and swirled himself around the swarms of Unborn, decimating them with his shield, and Sora shot Firaga spheres to the Magnega spell and then scattered them all across the courtyard, causing fiery explosions to send the swarms of Unborn flying.  They were dominating the battle so far.  Riku and Dawn stood back to back, and they took out the surrounding Unborn with powerful attacks and swinging arcs of their Keyblades, making energy waves emanate from them towards the swarms.  Vanitas mercilessly broke through the throngs of Unborn, summoning Unversed here and there to help keep the tide of battle in their favor.  He smirked as he decimated the continuing swarms of foes.  He found it stimulating.  “Now this is what I call a battle!” Vanitas remarked as he kept fighting.

Dexeres did his part too to fend off the countless Unborn, as he summoned Berserker and Samurai Nobodies to quickly dispatch the Unborn that surrounded them, helping them to clear more ground so that they could break the Unborn’s defenses easier.  He then dodged a few dozen projectile attacks from the endless swarms, and then he deflected them back, leaping and then slamming into the ground, sending a powerful shockwave that sent more than a dozen groups of Unborn flying.  Kairi created a spell circle around her with five slots, in which she placed a different element in each.  After placing Fire, Blizzard, Thunder, Earth, and Aero insignias into the slots, she started to charge her energy, reciting the following words as loudly as possible.  She had to concentrate all of her energy on this attack.  She had to make this work, she had to!

“Divine elements of nature, heed my call and come to my aid!  Lend me your strength so that the enemy may perish!  Divine judgment shall be cast, to smite the evil that is at hand!” she shouted, and as she finished uttering those words, the insignias lit brightly, forming a beam of light that headed upwards, and then started to split into different fragments, as a hail of Meteors started to fall.  “Divine Meteor!” she shouted, as a glorious display of Meteors rained down upon the swarms of Unborn, decimating them greatly.  Xion leapt from head to head of the Unborn, continuously striking at them and picking them off one by one, and then as she shot a Blizzaga crystal into the sky, Mickey leapt up swiftly and shattered the crystal, sending a hail of ice falling down on the hapless Unborn, making short work of them.  “Good work Xion!” Mickey said as he glanced over his shoulder at Xion.

The Keyblade Wielders fought valiantly, not letting their guard down and continuing their onslaught against the Unborn, giving it their all to the battle.  They couldn’t give up now!  Not when there was so much at stake!  There couldn’t be any backing down now!  Even if it cost them their lives, they would keep on fighting, ensuring that the worlds don’t fall into the hands of Xylek.  They knew they had to give it their all, or else no one would be left to defend the balance of light and darkness.  But as the battle drew on, the Keyblade Wielders started to get tired, and now they were being pushed against the wall, as the Unborn’s attacks became ever more relentless and ever more brutal.  They were trying desperately to stand their ground, but they were being overwhelmed.  It seemed that the end was drawing near for them.  But just as things were looking to end our heroes, a sudden hail of crimson flame rained down upon the Unborn, greatly decreasing their numbers.  As the Keyblade Wielders looked up, they saw six figures standing at the top of the wall of the courtyard.  “Is that…?” Dawn wondered, as she saw…The Elder and his counsel!
