The Ideal DragonBall Z DVD Collection?

Posted

Fellow fans of DragonBall with agree with me when I say THERE ARE TOO MANY MOTHERF**KING DRAGONBALL Z DVD RELEASES.

*breathes in and out* Sorry, I just had to get that out.

Anyways, Funimation, the dubbing/distributing company who owns the rights to DragonBall in America, a company that I hold dear to my heart, has missed time and time and TIME AGAIN with putting out a singular, ideal DragonBall Z DVD collection ever since it got the rights back in 1996. Overpriced singles DVDs, VHS tapes, poorly done remastered (and Blu Ray) box sets, mishandled sets that would have ended it but didn't, sets that only a select fanbase are going to actually buy, and cancelled sets that were actually GOOD but never got finished; this is the current lifespan of the DragonBall Z anime on DVD in America, and the shame continues to this day. (By the way, I'm not counting DragonBall Kai because technically it's a whole 'nother story in terms of release and handling and also because it's the only way to actually enjoy the anime as a whole nowadays in DVD format, obviously excluding the show in its in original format which, if you can't tell, doesn't exist right now.)

It's always something with Funimation and the fanbase that causes this kind of mediocrity in each new set. I don't really blame Funimation entirely though. Yes, they are responsible for selling these DVDs but even so, there's one key element that makes them do it in the first place, and that is: you and me. Yes. The fan-base. The FREAKING fan-base, oh God. I'm ready to start a whole new thread about this, I've got so much to say, but I'll keep it short: the DragonBall fans, in general, are both separated and unreasonable. They can't decide what they want and they don't understand that some of the things they want are COMPLETE SHIT. That's it in a nutshell, I suppose, so lets move on.

Now, the way I see it is, we need one more good release of the DragonBall Z anime that will END this cycle once and for all so the fans can stop bitching and Funimation can stop milking. But what would this release contain you ask? Well here's how I'd do it: All 291 uncut episodes spread out to maybe, I don't know, seven boxsets? Heh, get it, because seven Dragon Balls and... well, I can't think of anything else, so roll with it. I also know I'm ripping off the Dragon Boxes but again, shut up. Anyways, we should also have the picture quality be remastered (but done PROPERLY, FRAME BY FRAME, AND NOT DONE LIKE THE ORANGE BRICKS) and stay in 4:3 format, the way it was originally intended to be as well as they way it needs to STAY (whoever thinks 16:9 is the way to go... I can't even describe my feelings about that). As for language and soundtrack, both Funimation English dub with Bruce Falconer score and original Japanese dub w/subtitles with Kikuchi score. Obviously. And then they can throw in other stuff like booklets or menus or playback options or whatever, I'm not going into detail with that. I'm just focusing on the core aspect of the DVDs: the anime that we're buying the DVDs to see and how it is handled. I'm sure just having that is good enough.

Anyways, I've rambled on enough. Now then, tell me your thoughts on the ideal DragonBall Z anime re-release that will end all re-releases.

Why do we need more DBZ DVDs when we've got the Kai ones? :P

Because people still want to watch the original series in its original format, that's why. Even me.

Eh, I guess. I don't think we need MORE DVDs though. :

Yes, we do. Or else it's just gonna keep going on and on and on and on.

Not if we make them stop now. :P

The only way to make them stop is to get a collection out of them that will please everybody for the most part. At least to the point where we don't have to complain and compare all the OTHER releases we've gotten over the years.

Well, it'd be cool if we get Dragon Ball Z, the definitive edition, which contains all Episodes, as you said, fully Remastered in every sense of the word, and pretty much the way it's meant to be.  But I think I'll stick to the Kai one sine I already have 2 box sets.  Just 2 more plus the Buu Saga which is being aired now, I'll have all seasons of Kai. :)

I'm pretty sure that he meant Blu-ray along with DVD. He just mentioned DVDs because those are more common. I'm pretty sure there are more people with DVD players than with Blu-ray players (I have a BR player, but I know plenty of people who don't).

They've released every episode of Dragon Ball Z on DVD multiple times and even remastered it for DVD. Doing it again would potentially be a waste of money and would piss off fans even more.

I... Think you missed his point. He's saying they need to do ONE last, definitive one, otherwise they'll keep up their cycle of stupid, pointless DBZ DVD collections.

In what way would they be able to improve on what they've already released? The remastered ones were viewed as the final DVD release, they even re-recorded most of the voice acting.

I don't know, I'm not the one who made the thread. Firaga Sensei was just stating that he thinks that Funimation won't quit making these until they make one that all the fans can agree on.

I think they've covered everything people could want in DVD releases. If people want something else they're working on Blu-ray and Z Kai releases.

If that's the case, then how come they've re-released Z SEVEN TIMES?! And how come all of these releases were either terribly made, canceled early on, or currently out of print?! HOW?! And don't get me wrong, I love Kai, but this has NOTHING TO DO WITH KAI. I STATED THAT. And as for the Blu Ray releases... 2014 version of Orange Bricks. That's all I can say.

Because people wanted something different. And you said it yourself, SEVEN TIMES. They aren't going to do it again, no need to waste their time and money.

Well they're doing the Blu Rays aren't they? That still counts as a release. They're ALREADY wasting their time and money making another SHITTY release of Z. Like I said, its the 2014 version of the Orange Bricks, requested by dipshits who can't understand the simple fact that putting 4:3 footage in a 16:9 format MAKES IT LOOK LIKE A PILE OF WANK.

You get it now? The process has to end. Somebody needs to go up there and tell them how to release Z on DVD right because they obviously don't know how to do it themselves.

Yes, because Dragon Ball Z isn't available on Blu-ray. That's Funimation's decision.

Yeah, because Funimation are really going to waste their time releasing Dragon Ball Z on DVD for the 100th time. DVDs won't be around forever and there wouldn't much demand for it besides from hardcore fans.

Arg, Sora, when I say DVD, I mean Blu Ray too. Blu Ray is basically a DVD with better looking quality anyway. :/ I mean shit, lots of other anime release on DVD and Blu Ray even now.

And besdes that, are you really going to settle for something like the shitty Orange Bricks, the shitty Season Blu Rays, the cancelled Level sets, the out of print/very expensive (still the best option though) Dragon Boxes, or even the freaking Pioneer DVDs? Because that's all we got as far as options go. You can't honestly settle for that. Why can't we get a release as good as the ones for Yu Yu Hakusho or Sailor Moon? :/

No, it's not. Blu-ray is vastly superior to DVD. If you want another silly DVD release ask them.

And no, I honestly don't care about watching Dragon Ball Z on Blu-ray or DVD. I've seen them all before. I'm happy with Dragon Ball Z Kai. It is the definitive way to watch Dragon Ball Z in this day and age.

Hey come on, I've already stated I think Kai is superior to the original, you should know this by now. Even so, the original series is the original series and it deserves a DVD/Blu Ray release that doesn't suck ass.

That would be up to Toei. They have the higher quality film.

Or maybe Funimation actually does their freaking job right and remaster the footage themselves. Like with the Level sets. :/ Either that, or them and Toei need to start re-releasing the Dragon Box footage in smaller quantities, because at this point, I don't even know what to tell you. X_X

They have remastered them. These Blu-ray releases and the orange bricks are remastered, they're simply cropped because some people prefer it that way. Don't ask me why.

But Toei do have the higher quality film as they have the original film.

And you're telling me that's right? You're telling me its okay to settle for a product that shitty and not ask for a better one? That's not like asking for a new burger at a fast food place after you find out the original burger got spit on by some jerkass in the kitchen!

And I don't care what Toei has; Funimation obviously knew what they're were doing with the Level sets and they should have kept on with them instead of doing these half-assed Season sets.
