Shin Megami Tensei IV first impressions

Posted

Okay I know I bought the game a year ago but I couldn't find a time to play it up until recently so I know I seem a bit too late

I'm halfway through Shin Megami Tensei IV and I have to say I'm so in love with this game and it officially converted me into an Atlus fan

I'm really loving the story and all the choices you can make that can affect both your battles and your progress in the game.....sure there are other games with multiple endings but I loved the idea of Law and Chaos Routes in SMT

Also fusing demons and finding the right combination of moves and demons to fuse is a lot of fun

The battle system, while as traditional as you can get in a JRPG,is still good

Also the game sometimes can get really really hard even very early in the game (FREAKIN MINOTAUR DEMON AND HIS ONI KAGURA ATTACK),sure some bosses can be on the easy side, but when they're hard they're really really hard

Speaking of the soundtrack..oh my god the soundtrack

I almost love every single track in this game with my favorite being the boss battle theme(despite how many times I got my ass kicked)

Anyway once I finish the game I'll review it ....though I might review it after I finish the chaos route too.....don't know how to get the neutral route yet

And with this game I officially welcomed the Atlus madness into my gaming life

Shoot, I love Atlus and I need to get this game!

They really do have great games and your impressions of it makes me want to get it even more!

I've owned the game since it launched, and I like what I've played of it, but I just can't keep myself dedicated to sticking with it. The last time I played, I just reached

Tokyo

and couldn't figure out where to go on the map (I could've looked it up, but it was like 2 AM at that point, so I went to bed). The only part I dislike is demon negotiation, as I'm really terrible at it.

I really want to finish it, but right now Tales of Graces and Etrian Odyssey are taking up my time.

Did you get the limited edition of the game that had the strategy guide?

As for demon negotiation ......you have no idea how many demons f***ed me over by either taking too much from you and then run away or straight up attacking you even though you've just showered them with Macca and items

Yup. It's actually a pretty nice guide. It doesn't cover the entire game, but it's helpful when starting out (especially since this is the first mainline SMT game I've played). And yeah, I know the feeling. I've even gotten some game overs because of failed negotiations. X_X

And speaking of Game Overs

"You can pay me with play coins if you like"

Dude my Play coins were 300...and after 25 hours into the game now they're 10....yep

And boy if you're paying with Macca sometimes the price he demands is so ridiculously high to the point that he even demands more than the amount of Macca you have which is why I try to make sure I have as much play coins as I possibly can.

In short:Prepare to die in this game....A LOT

Yup, I pretty much just save all the time so I don't have to worry about Charon's ridiculousness. xD

I make sure I save before each and every boss battle...which thankfully Burroughs points out with "I'm detecting a strong demon ahead,do you wanna go on?"

And speaking of death.....how many times did you die against the Minotaur demon in Naraku?

That boss made me quit the game for two months. X_X I'm not sure how many times I lost to it, but it was definitely 10+. That's been the hardest part of the game for me so far.

I died against him almost 20+ times....I'm not kidding

and so far he was the hardest boss in the game...sure the others were challenging enough but they were no where near the terror that was the minotaur and he was THE FIRST FREAKIN BOSS OF THE GAME......except until you fight Pluto The Tormentor later in the game cuz Pluto the Tormentor is borderline cheap and luck based
