okay, so many people are saying that axel is gone, and others say that he isnt. i think he is because in the proof of existence room in twtnw, his icon is red, and the icon is read if the nobody is dead, or blue if alive, ex vexen :red

Well, Axel did disappear in Kh2. But he isn't "dead". According to nomura, there ARE NO deaths in KH. So i wouldn't say he is gone for good. I mean, if he was dead he wouldn't be in that cutscene on the secret birth by sleep ending. So it's most likely that he will come back. You will just have to wait until more KH games come out to see when he will come back. So, no, he's not gone for good.

'Axel' is gone. That is without a doubt. However, depending on the order that Axel and his Heartless were destroyed, 'Lea' might come back.

Axel is gone, that's definitely true. We all saw him fade away in KH2. Though, assuming his corresponding Heartless was defeated at some point, Lea will be reborn.

Reversal, Axel will most likely come back since the there are no deaths so it's most likely that his "somebody" Lea will return and meet Sora if his heartless is defeated first.

That's...pretty much what I just said.

 

The Nobody known as Axel is gone. The Somebody known as Lea will return.

The thing is, physical return =/= freeing from torment. Axel's torment is the same as Roxas; it lies in the fact that they have forgotten something important, or in this case, someone: Xion. Xion's torment is that he was completely forgotten. Find a way to bring back those memories of her, and the three of them are freed.

 

Anyways, that scene with Ven and Terra, RAX, and Namine, was completely symbolic, just to show who needs to be saved from torment.

I don't know. These comments that Nomura makes in the BBS Ultimania interview makes it seem like a more physical "revival". But I suppose you could be right.
