A Nintendo representative has confirmed to US video game site GameSpot that the newly announced new Nintendo 3DS will indeed be region locked like its predecessors. This goes for the standard new Nintendo 3DS as well as the new Nintendo 3DS XL. This basically means that you’ll be unable to play games from other territories on your new console.

Well, I guess this was pretty much to be expected since all the other versions of the 3DS are region locked as well. But still, I really wish Nintendo would stop with all the "region locking" bullcrap.

There will be a way to install it. We can wait months or years but in the end it'll have the Homebrew Channel

I never thought it wouldn't be, it's one of their ways of preventing piracy.

Yeah. But I both dread and look forward to the Homebrew Channel. I can't wait until people eventually find a way to bypass the region locking on the 3DS with it but I really fear that people will use this to use hacks in online matches like Smash bros 3DS, Kid Icarus: Uprising, Mario Kart 7, ect. It happened with the Wii when the Homebrew Channel came out for it.

As usual, Nintendo gives me more reasons not the like the new 3DS. Sigh.....

I don't get the big deal. I wouldn't import any games anyway, so this doesn't bother me at all. : Still going to try to get the New 3DS day one.

I assume it might be more to do with the actual games region coding rather than the hardware. Like how for PS4 & PS3, the hardware is region locked but the PS4 and PS3 game discs are usually region free.
